Gosh, I feel like that is SO important to really internalize that no responses initially will be par for the course. I haven't began creating much yet because I spend too much time planning and think everything has to be perfect first. I know that just holds me back! I love your videos and always learn so much. Thank you so much for sharing!

Informative class. thankyou so much! A few questions: How do you go about finding/knowing which themes to focus on when creating new collections if the clients don't tell you what they are looking for? What type of file do the clients usually ask you to send them the files in? Do you have a process for discovering which clients you want to send your work to?

Hi June! I love these questions! There are so many details to go over with each of these, so I've covered them more in depth in my membership The Studio where we go more into licensing, trends, and working with licensors! classes.lizkohlerbrown.com/the-studio-membership

Thank you so much for this lovely video! I have a couple of questions for you if that's ok! 1) If you have a collection on Spoonflower, will fabric companies still be interested in licensing the collection? I see many artists' collections on both Spoonflower and other fabric company sites but would think that many companies prefer to view collections that have not yet been released. 2) Can multiple companies license fabric collections at the same time? I also see many artists feature the same collections across multiple fabric companies at times but would think non-exclusive licensing would still be exclusive by product category. Thank you!

Hello! I think it depends a lot on the company! Some offer non-exclusive contracts whereas others require exclusivity, so you might consider which one you want and look for companies that offer that option. Every company and contract is different so it's hard to say there are any strict rules when it comes to licensing and POD!

When you send your collections to companies for their review do you not post them on your socials in order to keep them “exclusive”? It’s hard for me not to share my work sometimes!

I think that varies a lot by company and artist, but personally I do like to keep my designs private until I've sent them to all the companies I'm interested in! So maybe you could think of it as not sharing YET but eventually you will!

Hi Anna! That is a great question. It is a huge topic though so I'm not sure I could cover it here! I do share art licensing tips in my membership The Studio and am planning a big art licensing series in the future where we will go into this! ❤

When you say 'Art Licensing' your really mean giving exclusive rights to the first taker accepting your designs ? Or does this mean you actually have your art 'licensed' ? And I have done about 35 designs, and they are just so bad, now I am renaming them 'remakes' and keeping the originals. Making bad designs is a good way to improve, as I have improved immensely, just not quite there yet, but in the middle, thank you for your very open and honest video !

Art licensing can vary a lot by company and contract. Some companies will ask for exclusive rights, but most license your art for one product for a set amount of time. So glad you're seeing improvement in your work! I think one of the best goals is just to be better than we were before, and to only compare our work to our past selves. Keep creating!

How much money do you make from licensing?

Hi Diane! This varies a lot from person to person and depends on what products you license your artwork on. I know people who make a few thousand a year, and others who make a few hundred thousand, so it varies greatly! I cover more variables and details in my class on passive income for artists here: www.lizkohlerbrown.com/use-your-creative-skills-to-generate-passive-income/
