How I Learned Spanish

🇪🇸 I love the Spanish language and the many cultures who speak it, but my journey to learn the language was anything but easy. There was pain, struggle, and even a near-death experience! In this video, I share the whole story of how I learned Spanish (my second foreign language after French), including all the bumps and mistakes along the way. You'll also learn why I speak Spanish with a Canary Island accent!

I learnt Spanish watching TV. We didn't have cable so we could watch only what the antenna (looking for the English word) was sending. Most Spanish speaking channels from South America were free. In the last year of the primary school I started with Spanish lessons on school till pre University. Now my Spanish is C1. Next year I wanna follow a legal Spanish course for business purposes. Kind regards from the island of Curaçao

@@edcarlos536 watching TV with subtitles in the same language, listening to songs in the main language even if I don't understand but listening to native songs let me learn the pronunciation. In our school system we learn many languages. You start at the kindergarten with Papiamentu and Dutch. At the end of the primary school you get Spanish and English. At the secondary school English and Dutch are compulsory. This is how I learned all those languages and French. I moved to the Netherland to attend the university and here my Dutch got better but my English died. After 15 years I moves back to my native island and noticed that my spoken English is not good enough anymore. Every Friday I have some conversations in English with native speakers about our jobs and I tried to read every day a legal English text. I have very good memory so memorizing the frequency dictionary helps a lot. This year I'm focusing on improving my English and next year my written Papiamentu.

I envy you and your school system, here in the Philippines we only learn english, we are conquered by Spainard 300 years ago, some of our words maybe 30% of our words are originated from Spanish words, so maybe I think up to 1980s maybe they teach Spanish from what I hear, but in the 90s they don't teach Spanish anymore, now I want to learn spanish, Because I want to travel in the future in Latin American countries, and also you know to learn another language aside from English, the Problem is, it is very hard to retain in your memory, because I don't use it a lot. For example I memorise this words and phrases then in other days or weeks I forgot it because no one is talk to me in Spanish, I try ablo app, but the people there is only using it most by finding a partner or date, I want to learn it but it is hard to retain idk I don't use it, you are good in language because you know many languages.

I agree with placing importance on communication! When I lived in South Korea and my friend was going through a hard time, grammar was the last thing on my mind. Sure, I hated that I was flustered, trying to find the right words to console her but I managed to make her smile somehow and that's all that mattered. I since used that as motivation to improve so that I could be a friend that she wanted to confide in. The connections that you make with people can truly be life-changing ♡

That gave me a foundation, but I didnt know spanish speakers and despite loving the culture and music I really fell off. Just recently I decided to pick it back up and I knew I wanted to learn in a way that was natural to me. I'm happy with my progress and the resources I've found. Olly- First I enjoy your videos and thank you for always sharing. I grew up in a house our dad talked to us in Spanish. I am a black American. I am a daddy's girl. Anything my dad gave us- playing chess, playing checkers, dominoes, working crossword puzzles and Spanish- I absolutely LOVE IT!!!! I think we acquire a language, NOT learn a language. We learn the rules of the language when we focus on the learning of the language. Then you learn the rules. You speak the language and now you understand why you do what you do. Language is acquired. All languages you will have have bumps and mistakes. That is part of the acquiring process. You repeat what you hear based off who is talking to you in the target language. I am a Texan from Texas. My dad was a Texan from Texas. My Spanish is very "Texas." You hunting down Spanish speakers is a good thing- you know why? You needed to practice with someone who spoke the target language. Guess what I grew up to be..... a teacher who teaches young people (ages 15 to 17 ) to acquire the Spanish language in their lives. I am pretty good at it. My students leave speaking basic Spanish. I use lots of comprehensible input. Some have been extremely motivated and are planning to go to college to become..... teachers of Spanish. Reading the book gave you your passion and helped you understand the language you wanted to acquire. It was your "immersion". Your "daddy's boy" moment. Suerte.

Since then I've been able to understand most of what I hear in english, but I haven't been lucky enough to find someone to talk to in english to practice my pronounciation (and my grammar too!). Ollie, you're an honorable person. In this world of showing off youtubers I love how you explain your experience, telling it as it was, with its ups and downs. Without trying to sound everything was easy peasy for you, or that you have a gift no one else has and able to be fluent in 2 days when no one else could. I also love the fact that you've a Canarian accent by the way. That accent is the one that will make you understood and at the same time locals to every Spanish speaking country you visit will feel you're not so distant from their accent, independently on if you go to the Spanish mainland, African speaking countries or any South American destination. Yes, they will all ask you were are you from. Most of the times to know why they feel that way towards your speaking but it is nice to be able to connect at that emotional level with so many people just by speaking to them. I'm a dual Spanish/British national, born and bred in Canary Islands (Gran Canaria to be precise), and first time it happened to me I was with family members of some friends I was visiting at Dominican Republic. They felt so at ease as to openly recognise me that they were puzzled with me because they seriously struggled to understand Spanish speakers (from the mainland) sometimes but did not understand how I sounded so local to them.

I am on the "speak as early you can"-side. I know that is not everyone taste and there are some arguments against it. But with Spanish it worked very well for me. So good, that I would without a glimpse repeat it in another language. The problem is not to speak too early. The problem is to find a language partner who fits to you. Especially I f you are looking up for these in the internet. oh, and I should clarify that I did not wrote _only speaking,_ You have to do other things as well. I like reading in Spanisch. At the moment I am reading my fifth or sixth book in Spanish. (and yes, I read very slowly :D )

Personally I see it just as a standardisation tool for formal courses and exams, so I have no problem saying I'm C2 in Spanish since I passed DELE C2. But I've also seen some people react strongly to that, as if me saying that meant that I was claiming to be near-native. So with strangers I'll usually say something like "I have a C2 certification" just to play it safe. But yeah, a C2 certification is certainly not the end of the road. :)

Awesome story! I want to share about my Spanish learning Journey. I'm about a "B1" early "b2" or so. I can talk to folks and be understood. My accent is pretty standard for an estadounidense who has learned Spanish to a decent level. However, my rr is still hilariously terrible. Like, it's a combination of an l, an r, and w (plus it's way too far back in my throat). I used to be super embarrassed about it, but then I realized that... well, it's hard to do properly (for me). All of my Spanish-speaking friends have told me that they know what I'm saying, that it sounds wrong but is understandable. For me, that was a super relief, and now I am weirdly proud of it. Like, I know I'm trying and I'm getting closer to the correct pronunciation of a challenging phoneme, and I like for folks to know that I am LEARNING their language (and I love it.)

It took me ages to manage the trilled "r". Dunno if this will help, but one trick that helped me was an exercise where you force yourself to think "prince of Prussia" in your head while saying "pdince of pdussia". (so you replace de "r" with a "d"). And then just play around with it. That "pd" can get you very close to feeling what the trilled "r" should feel like.

I’m learning Spanish with online classes and am just about to move to A2, but my second language was Russian and I lived in Moscow in the 90s (only for 8 months) so that judge you’re meant to have in your brain, who keeps you from making a million errors in the beginning, is just nonexistent. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but my fear of sounding like an idiot can’t be coaxed back into existence. Consequently, however, this means I really need to force the editor to engage. If three teachers in a row tell you your verb concordance needs work, then most likely your verb concordance needs work. It’s a new sort of problem to have. I just bought several Spanish language novels, however, and am pleased to hear it was so helpful to you.

It's interesting how your approaches to learning French and Spanish were very different, but you were still able to attain fluency. My own approach to learning Chinese, when I moved to China at age eighteen was different again. There is no one size fits all for language learning! I would say that there is one key similarity, though, which is that we both had a passion for a particular aspect of the culture (martial arts in my case). My girlfriend is half German half Spanish. I am Greek but we both live im Germany our entire lifes and speak both German as well as Spanish and Greek respectively. We both started to learn the other person's language and this has been so fun to me until this day. I even took a Spanish class at my university to learn the grammatic as well as some vocabulary. But having the possibilty to actively "live" the language by having someone to talk to is as you have said it the best possible thing. And though I am rather a perfectionist I also do not care making mistakes and enjoy learning. (Little fun fact Spanish and Greek share many similarities in terms of phonetics, and hence sound somewhat alike in many occasions. It happens often here in Germany that my Greek ears pick something that sounds Greek but turns out to be Spanish :D) I really liked your video and just subscribed to you! I hope more videos about how you learned other languages will come in the future :)

I tried it for months! And the teacher I worked with was super fun and I feel like I’d get more use out of it if I didn’t use the curriculum they provide. More just asking them if they could have conversations with me.(classes can be about anything but I always chose to follow the curriculum) I canceled it though and I recommend just learning through stories like Olly is always trying to say. To just build up your vocabulary, a great app i recommend if you have a little basis of how Spanish works is to use LingQ and it’s way cheaper than baselang 😅 just use that to get some listening comprehension and reading immersion. And I also recommend dreaming Spanish KZread channel using the chrome extension of “Language reactor” . I’ll definitely use baselang again when I’m able to start having conversations with enough vocabulary in my head. But if you watched Olly’s other videos one of the explains that it’s not necessary to speak right away. It’s not, just build your comprehension in reading which will help with listening and then BAM you’ll start being able to think in Spanish and slowly start speaking.. this was a little long but I hope it helps!

It _can_ be helpful, yes. But at the end of the day, speaking to ourselves is just practice. Don't rely on how you sound as true accuracy, because you could end up harboring mistakes early on. Which is why when it comes to speaking, try to consult native speakers. There are apps like Tandem or HelloTalk :)

Nice! I'm a bit surprised Spanish is popular in the UK, since a large Spanish-speaking population is not on y'all's doorstep. Spanish is a wonderful although confusing language! o vs ó? And people say Spanish vowels are clear to pronounce... I'm learning Spanish because all the Latinos in my community only speak with other Spanish-speakers/Latinos, if you try join their conversation or greet them, they will just ignore you unless you are speaking in Spanish even if they know English. Most of the people here speak Spanish so speaking Spanish will be really useful in meeting new people who would not want to talk to you otherwise even if they know English themselves.

I am also very curious about that because I am bilingual, I grew up speaking English and Spanish. I started recently to learn French and I feel like I am learning it at an exponential rate because it is a Romance language. I feel that it would be different for someone who is monolingual, especially for someone who speaks a language that is farther away from one of the Romance languages.

@@storylearning - Actually, it IS quite an achievement if you learn the language deeply. The problem is, most people don't know what that means. Most people are even quite unfamiliar with their native language. Most of what I see on KZread, and I mean 90% of it, are people who are pretending, because they believe that when they've more or less mastered the most simple things about a language, they've mastered everything. Also keep in mind that reading & writing a language are entirely different skills from speaking a language. I can guarantee you that those who speak a language most fluently are also very literate. I was a foreign language teacher, so I know a thing or two about this topic. I was also a teacher who has a university education in the language, and a foreign experience for more than a full year, not just any Joe Schmo. Some idiots are just plain "tone deaf" when it comes to learning a foreign language. Hey, but I give bonus points to anyone who knows a hell of a lot of slang in a foreign language, even from multiple countries which speak the same language, even if the dialects are different.
