How I learn Mandarin (broke & lazy)

I’M LEARNING MANDARIN CHINESE! Join me in this vlog where I study mandarin so I can finally reconnect with my roOts. This is usually my study routine for how I learn Chinese, but I change it up every few weeks to keep it fresh.
If you’re learning languages too, I’d like to know! Let me know how it’s going in the comments!

    @@yuenatv wheyyy haha but hm I'd say finding comprehensible input can be easy or really hard depending on the language you learn. For really popular languages like japanese there are alot of videos on youtube, all you have to is search it up. With korean though I found it really hard to find so I kinda had to get creative. For example, depending on your level, listening to anything from kids shows to kdramas. Podcasts are also really good, I ended up using ttmik's (talk to me in korean) podcasts and they were super helpful. Are you trying it find it for mandarin?

    Maybe you can do like a 'how to sound like a native' feature? I (and my entire family) have trouble with 翘舌音 sounds lmao (which is a feature of my dialect, we don't have [ʂ] instead we speak a [ɕ] sound) and it took me like my entire life to realise that I just need to go to wikipedia and look at how I should've positioned my tongue upwards to make the 'sh' and 'zh' consonant. Like if there's a section on "how to pronounce pinyin properly" with a proper guide to the mouth and tongue movements without using all the linguistic jargon I couldn't understand :)

  • @yuenatv

    @yuenatv

    2 ай бұрын

    OOO i love this idea!! i’ll have a think about best way to implement it :) from reading books/ videos, people recommend training the mouth like muscle memory? Keep going over the alphabet sounds, and also watching people speak (on KZread, dramas etc) is very useful! I also use forvo.com for other languages since I'm just beginning to learn other languages and my mouth isn't very used to the language!

  • @FizzNitro

    @FizzNitro

    2 ай бұрын

    My biggest trouble was mispronouncing words because of consonants not present in the languages I'm most familiar with, and thus I am not mimicking accurately the way a native will pronounce words because my old static brain is using sounds I'm most familiar with. Like my grandma can't do her 'r's and 'sh's of Mandarin cuz it isn't present in Hokkien no matter how much she've listened to Chinese media (which is pretty much since the 80s when Mandarin became the prestige dialect in Malaysia). And I wouldn't have guessed how to mimic Cantonese's characteristic [ɵ, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close-mid_central_rounded_vowel], or Hakka's [ɲ] if I didn't speak it since childhood and I didn't have Wikipedia. In fact I was pronouncing my 'threes' like 'trees' up until recently cuz the [θ] sound just didn't exist in any Chinese dialect I know of. I feel like if I had discovered the International Phonetic Alphabet much sooner (and the table of phonology in Mandarin from Wikipedia + those really helpful mouth cross section pictures), I could actually practice with the correct way of saying things instead of people instantly recognising that I'm from Singapore or Taiwan with my [ɕ]'s and way off [y]'s hahhaa

    我喜欢学习中文。我喜欢学习语言。 I studied Japanese in primary school in Australia and fell in love with it. I then studied it at Uni. That was 20ys ago now. I stumbled across k Drama in 2022 and fell in love with Korean and learnt some for about a year. Then I discovered c Drama in 2023 and started actively learning in March this year. I use an app called immersive Chinese it really helps learning the hanzi in context. Other than that I watch way too much vertical c drama on you tube. I'm still beginner level for all the languages because I lack commitment. I put a goal to learn all the vocab from HSK 3 by the end of 12 months but it may be too unrealistic for me. Of the 500 words from the new hsk1 I know about half now so I still have a long way to go. がんばって 화이팅 加油↖(^ω^)↗ Good luck for your language journey. じゃまた 안녕 再见👋

    @@yuenatv in Australia we have to learn a language as part of the curriculum but different area's choose different languages. Japanese was huge in the mid nineties when I was in primary school. The area I currently reside in is all Italian as a second language the previous area was French Japanese and Indonesian depending on the school you chose for your child. Other options are German, Spanish, Mandarin and Hebrew there are a couple or others but I forgot them because my children are home-schooling and wanted to learn German like their Swiss father instead of another language. Languages in secondary school is optional here and I miss out on continuing studying Japanese as I moved to a different area. I didn't know it at the time but my University used one of the top Japanese textbooks for teaching and they are hard to come by second hand now it was the 2nd edition and the termites ate mine while in storage so completely bummed out about that. I did really well at the beginner level Japanese at university but as I chose to do a double degree and focus more on the business side of things I struggled with intermediate Japanese and decided to quit. I wanted to keep my grades up and do student exchange or got to Japan as an ESL teacher but I needed a degree for that and a TEASL certificate. I was struggling with depression and chronic fatigue at the time and didn't graduate from my 2nd degree. I moved to the other side of Australia and basically focused on my mental and physical health. Later I got married and started a family. It was only after I got stuck down with long haulers covid at the end of 2021 and then discovered K drama that my love of languages revived. I regret not keeping it up and lost a lot of Japanese vocabulary. I look at my past thing I did in Japanese and can't believe I used to know so much. I've been healing a lot of emotional trauma and discovered a creative side of my self this year I started writing a novel on top of learning mandarin. I feel a little lost without a curriculum or class but try to put at least a half an hour a day. My new dream is to write novels based mostly in Asia or to tell stories of Asian expats in Australia and I want to have them translated into Asian languages. So to be able to communicate with fans and travel to those countries would be a dream come true. It's my new motivation.
