How I KNOW My Goats Are Bred (without a pregnancy test)! | My First Home Fecal Exam

We have NINE pregnant goats on the farm right now and some are very ready to give birth while others still have months to go! There's a few ways to tell a doe is pregnant WITHOUT needing to use expensive tests, and all the girls are ready to show you! I bought a new Microscope and have done my first home fecal! It's much easier than I imagined!

    Brilliant! Very thorough and simple explaining! I've had goats 17 yrs. I usually just track by when I have the buck in the coral. Then count 5 months after and if I see mating then I use that date for estimating due date. Loved the way you showed all the ways of checking pregnancy. We do all our vet care unless not sure. I'm curious about the fecal home testing. That would save some money. And know when to deworm. Thanks so much, Usha still confused about it after 17 yrs!

    Very interesting content Heather!! The udder bumps are precious!!! I don't blame you for giving a feel and to justify it will help train for the milk stand! I agree with you about the added expense for confirming pregnancy. These days a farmer could bankrupt themselves by purchasing all the "gadgets" and equipment that many are just not imperative to production or health of your animal. Now the microscope is not at all in the same category as the others. You will be able to provide better treatment to your herd and wow, what a neat tool for homeschooling!!! That's awesome that you are fecal testing now, it's such a great way to improve your parasite management! I also run my own with the fecal float method since that's what all the vets I've worked for used, but I know a lot of goat people seem to like the McMaster method. Very rare to find an actual worm too, mostly they are hairs that look like worms, but I think you found one there. I don't actually think those were whipworm eggs though. Worm eggs will typically have well defined borders unless they are decayed. It will take some time to train your eye, but with practice you'll be a pro soon!

  • @SageandStoneHomestead

    @SageandStoneHomestead

    Even better that they were probably not eggs!! A week or so after this I did a fecal on another goat and actually saw whipworm eggs and I totally agree with you! Little footballs with nubs on each end. I'm really excited to be getting this practice before real worm season hits!♡

    When I raised dairy goats I knew when they were bred by a thick mucous discharge after breeding. I would count my days from that date. Never wrong. I would keep the buck in a separate field until after November 15th then he would breed all the girls. Every year at work I would take 2 weeks off on those dates in April. Everyone teased me it was my "maternity leave " every year.

    I use an ultrasound tech in our area. It is cheaper than doing blood samples. In VA, I drew blood and did the tests through the county. It wasn't too expensive. Ultrasounds are cheap here, and for that I am thankful. I think it is $10 per goat. I loved the little udders my first fresheners got. Oh my goodness! Cute as can be.

    I can’t wait for babies, but I sure wish your kidding season started in February to get my fix before our kidding season 😂 Schwanli looks so big, how many do you think? I follow a girl in Washington State, Lakeview Dairy Goats that her doe had 5 girls!! Can you believe it? She hasn’t uploaded the video yet but I’m checking every 5 minutes my yt page 😂😂😂 I found (this season ) that unless I put pressure to feel for babies they don’t move 😊 maybe they are lazy but if I can’t feel them I press and immediately get a kick, almost saying “go away “ 😂 I’m enjoying every bit of this next 3 weeks with my girls, they have such different personalities that I can sit in the barn with them and come up with a video on just their drama and hilarious antics. Trust me, I can’t wait for babies, but I’m loving the calm before the storm of babies arriving. Still stressed with projects for the babies but that is a never ending story. Athene is due around Calamity’s due date, but I don’t see any udder development yet, HOWEVER, she is starting to show a lot more in the last week, and eat a lot more. I’m so excited for the late kidding moms on your farm and my baby Athene. Thanks for sharing friend! 😊
