How I Grocery Shop as a BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT | Living off of $40 for TWO WEEKS

♡ Grocery Shopping as a BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT // Tips + Tricks ♡
→ Hey yall! I wanted to show yall just how possible it is to stay on a low budget for grocery shopping + still get some pretty good stuff! Here's how I do it on a $40.00 biweekly budget!
I buy 2 big dinner meals (one for each week) that will last me 2-3 days each.
I buy filler dinner meals to eat on the days that my big meals run out.
I buy small lunch items that are light and on the go!
I buy breakfast items that will last me both weeks!
I also budget some out to eat or fast food money to fill in the gaps along the way :)

When I lived alone on a $50 budget I used to buy A bag of chicken breast 6 Milk 6 Frosted flakes 3 Water 2 Eggs 2 Spaghetti 1 Shake and bake parmesan 2 Beef 4 Tortillas 2 Cheese 2 Taco mix 1 Olives 1 Tomato sauce 1 Frozen tostino pizza 2 Ramen 2 Shrimp 4 Alfredo 2 A big 2 liter of pop 1 Candy 1 So you'll take the boneless chicken breast half of them and cut them in half season them in the parmesan shake and bake Bake them make some spaghetti make tomato sauce with Italian seasoning , salt, pepper , crushed red peppers add the sauce onto the spaghetti and top it off with s chicken. 3 chicken Parms. Then I cut 2 of the other chicken breast and put it in alfredo with noodles. I used the last chicken breast and put it in tortillas with cheese and salt and pepper and ranch I took my beef and put half of it in a pan with taco seasoning the other half I cooked in a pan with my left over pasta sauce. I added cheese beef and olives to my taco I reccomend always having salsa and parmesan cheese and mayo and bread. Then I cooked eggs or boiled them for breakfast or a snack or cereal I made ramen for lunch I always drank water with every meal but sometimes I'd have a treat myself might and have a $1 candy like m&ms and some pop

And that is the way you do it! You are a budget conscious girl and probably will always be so to some degree. When my husband finished college and we both were making more money, one of the only things I buy and don't look at the price is fresh fruit and fresh seafood. Everything else I am still budget conscious about even today.

Great job and good ideas!!!! Two things,. you might just want to buy a bag of potatoes versus the Bob Evans ready-made. It's about the same price and will last a lot longer. You can do baked potatoes, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, loaded potatoes. That might be something to try is your shepherd's pie but in baked potato cups like shepherd's pie loaded potato. Also try off-brand, you might like it and even just buying off brand tomato soup would have had you $40 or less at the budget.

I will also chime in here and agree. Especially since there’s no Aldis near you. I have a few somewhat local Hispanic run places near me and it’s true. TONS of variety for fruit and veg and insane cheap prices. Great selections of meats as well!!!!! Usually bags of different beans for basically pocket change. Seriously, even if you have to travel a little farther than wanted, try it. You’ll be surprised T what you can get. Also, do you have any farmers markets near you? Haven’t watched the whole video yet so unsure if you speak in it or what but they might also be a good idea for you!

I’m not exactly sure where she is located, but by the brands ( Nickles bread & her tortillas) she’s in the Midwest. I grew up in southern Ohio ( thus knowledge of the brands) and Mexican & Asian supermarkets are not very prevalent unless you are in larger cities. So, Walmart, Aldi & Kroger are most cost effective grocery stores.

Bánh mì Vietnamese sandwiches are sold in some Asian grocery stores the one here in my city I happen to pop in today to grab a cake for my roommate's birthday. I had bought her a card in balloon and some small gifts at the Dollar Tree in my city and an Asian lady that happened to be shopping they are told me about the Asian grocery store in the same Plaza they had a whole section with hot foods and baked goods to I also was able to grab a bag of potatoes in the reduced produce section for a dollar and grab two things that spinach for under $3 and sriracha and garlic too. the sriracha sauce in regular grocery stores is in a tiny bottle and travel dollars more than how much I spent today for a large bottle.

A hard time for us. Now were fortunate with his job (that he got at the end of my pregnancy that we had to wait for the academy to start), bought a house, &spend way too much on food for having 2 toddlers now. Lol Definitely possible if you spend it right but a bit hard to be healthy. You did a good job budgeting!! 👍🏼

I find the cheap food is super healthy. When I was first married we ate oatmeal (cheap), bagged apples and bananas, frozen vegetables (one dollar a bag), beans, rice, chicken, eggs. I 'd get a premade cake mix and make the icing myself. It was about the same price as the dollar icing, but made such a difference in the cake. Sometimes I would not put icing at all and just sprinkle a little powdered sugar, off brand vanilla wafers and Graham crackers are cheap also. Tuna is also pretty cheap to make a large tuna salad with a couple of eggs.

If you buy a bag of potatoes half can go to the shepherd's pie and the rest can supplement lunches or dinners for the month. If you bought plain yogurt you could use that as sour cream (trust me) or you could just eat them with a salt and pepper and/or butter. Also, mashed potatoes with butter are really good, you don't have to worry about buying any milk, etc. Using a handmixer gets a "creamy" texture or you can use a fork for a chunky texture. I think you have done well. Check out Budget Bytes if you want to try some more scratch cooking. She knows cheap eating.

Well for the milk (if you want it in the mashed potatoes) you could use Pet milk or canned milk. It tastes the same in recipes, cheaper than bottled milk and lasts longer. I really do not like milk to drink, but when using it in recipes, I buy a little can of milk because if I bought even a quart it was more expensive and the remainder got wasted.

GIRL you should do quinoa taco soup/bake. It will be your “giant meal” for the week and it’s SO GOOD. Basically it’s 1lbs ground turkey (or beef) 1 minced onion 2-4 cloves of garlic 1can of corn, black beans, kidney beans, diced fire roasted tomatoes (or regular diced tomatoes if you don’t like the roasted flavor), tomato sauce. 1cp quinoa Cummin, Chili powder, onion powder, coriander, sal /pep garlic, (or honestly you can use a taco packet but I prefer to season to taste) Basically you can add any ratio of this recipe and it’s AMAZING everytime. You can add a can of enchilada sauce, siracha, anything.

I think you're doing a good job of working with what you have. :) Another good idea for busy college kids (or anyone else), is to watch some of the make ahead meal/freezer meal prep videos. That way you'll always have stuff that's easy to make when you're especially busy, or just not feeling it. It would be one way to not spend as much money on fast food & more expensive convenience foods. ;) I really like & recommend Jamerrill's videos. She's very down to earth, tries to use recipes that don't cost a lot to make, & she has a lot of really good meal ideas. Obviously, if you're a young college student, you probably aren't going to be feeding near as many people as she does (but who knows, you may be feeding a bunch of other hungry college kids lol), or you'll have plenty of leftovers, but you can easily scale her recipes down (she takes you through the recipes step by step), if you need to. There are a ton of other good freezer meal videos you can find on here that can walk you through the recipes, & maybe even inspire you to create your own recipes. Happy eating! :)

Im kind of late lol but buying the pre-made mashed potatoes and pasta salad is so expensive! I find that getting a 10 or even 25 pound bag of potatoes is cheaper and lasts about a month for me. One of my favorite things to do is budget (organization makes me happyyyyy) and finding swaps like that (and buying a block of cheese [cheaper and little preservatives] instead of shredded because you can always cut or chop tiny pieces) saves so much money and can usually be healthier if youre looking into that! Ive never seen green beans in shepherd's pie but it looks amazing!

Look into couponing during your summer vaca, a lot of ppl that's into couponing get a lot of groceries for free or even a $1. Get the Kroger app! So many good deals, and look out for their weekly paper. They sometimes, well a lot of the times have a buy 10 for 10$ and they’ll have Annie’s mac and cheese along with other of their organic things, breads, frozen pizzas, drinks, yogurts, ice cream, canned goods, etc and sometimes you don’t even have to buy the 10 items for them to be a dollar each. I don’t know if you have H-E-B where you live, but they also have great deals too.

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive. A bag of rice, beans, peas, potatoes goes a long way as staples and can be VERY versatile. I used to feed my family of 5 on $100/every 2 weeks. We ate healthy, lots of fruits and veggies and at the time I was NOT vegan so animal products were involved. We ALSO loved pasta/potato salad, but I bought the pasta/potatoes and added ingredients instead of boxed more processed food options(it stretched a lot longer). Bananas can make an awesome NICE cream when frozen. They're super inexpensive. I keep some fresh, peel and freeze the rest for smoothies, NICE cream or to dip in a cacao sauce or peanut butter. I had 2 college/uni students at the same time. They learned how to budget early, it also helped that they were taught to cook full meals at 13. You had great choices. Making casserole type dishes are ALWAYS a great option. Great job!

I typically spend about $20 per week on groceries at Aldi. This includes breakfast for 7 days and lunch for 5 days, and i usually get one big meal and fillers for one week. Theyre a good bit cheaper than walmart.

I am a student as well in 2022 and my budget is very tight as well. I have only 30 to 35 dollars an month to eat and I have to think out side of the box if I wanted food each day for school as well dinner when I get home. It not easy being a student on a budget and broke.

You should try crockpot meals! It might be expensive to buy the crockpot, but you can make meals for the entire week in that thing.

I dont know where you live or how things are priced by you but by me the farmers market is where its at for produce. It lasts a long time, is healthy, and for under $10 you can get enough produce for yourself for those 2 weeks. Also they’re fun to go to.

You could do blueberry and strawberry wraps. I’ve seen them be done with tortillas and Nutella even and then fruit. They’re YUMMY!!!

I just stumbled on your channel, no idea why I’m watching...single 33 year old mom of a 10 year old lol. But I liked your tips. Do you have an aldi around? I used to shop at Walmart and then we got 2 Aldi stores in our area. I thought I was bargain hunting at Walmart but 99 cents for a 12 pack of tortillas, 38 cents a can on veggies, fresh fruits and produce are so much cheaper (some do go bad quicker but I’ve learned to buy what I can use that day or the next day for berries and stuff}. I think you’re $40 would go so much further. I think they call them Trader Joe’s in certain areas but they are very similar. Also, I’ve never seen anyone make Shepard’s pie with those 4 ingredients like my family did! Everyone I know puts gravy in it gag....but I’ve also never made it with green beans, I was raised with the veggie being cream corn and it’s soooooo good. You should try that one night. Same exact way just 2 cans of cream corn to replace the green beans. I know what I’m making tomorrow night for dinner now lol you’ve got me craving it.
