How I Grew Goji Berry From Seed and Had Goji Berries On In 6 Months.

I'm relatively new to Goji Berries, so even though I've had success with an already started plant, I wanted to grow Goji Berries from seed. When growing something new, I usually try to read up on it and find out as much as I can. One thing that I found out is that there is some misinformation out there on the internet. In this video, I will show you how I planted the seeds, and I will follow their progress for the first 6 months or so. We went from planting Goji Berry seeds, to having Goji Berries on the plant in about 6 months.

These bushes have survived several times of my husband coming in and proudly announce that he “whacked that sticker bush by the fence”🙄😑🤣 So they are definitely hardy! 🤣 This year this bush went gangbusters it’s only about 36” tall, but I’m sure over 3 months I’ve picked 6 cups of berries from it. Thanks to your very instructive video I will have the know how to multiply my harvest next year!😊❤️💪 AND have plants to sell!!!

    I'm at 5000 foot elevation in Arizona, so we get snow in winter a bit and our highs are about 100 deg for a few days in summer. Usually about 90ish though. Our gojis do great here in the ground. They aren't a berry that you just eat off the vine so much, but we love them in salads and yogurt and such. They add a nice flavor. They always produce late in the season, about August thru December. Our 3 plants are only about 4 foot high or so, but they produce like crazy. Much better than most berries I have grown. They are root spreaders and I have moved several of these shoots and they do very well. But I wanted to try some from seed this year just for kicks. So thanks for the video!

    Thank you for the video. I wanted to share my first experience with trying to start some Gojis from seed. Mistake number one: Assuming I was working with bad seed stock. I sprinkled seeds onto a planting bed like sugar based on the assumption that I would only have about ten percent germination. I'm guessing it was close to 100 percent because I removed the lid in a week and had what I can only describe as "Goji turf". So I scrambled to round up containers and ended up with them all in big pots. I had well over 300 seedlings. Mistake number two: Being overly generous with water (a problem I've corrected). It's amazing to me how little water these plants can thrive on. I lost quite a few seedlings to damping off, but, oddly enough, managed to save quite a few of them. Anyway, I think it would be great if you were a next door neighbor. You've obviously been at this a while and I imagine you would be a fountain of information. Take care and thanks again.

    So they're pretty easy to propagate? What starting soil do you use? I have 2 goji berries that I put out in the orchard 3 years ago and they taste just enough like a pepper that the deer leave them alone. They act like any perennial and go dormant for the winter. They handled -10f just fine last year and jumped back into production in spring. They produce flowers once it starts to warm up. I would say if you put them in the soil to mulch them well as they hate competition.

    I don't remember exactly how long I put them there, but it was months. I'm not even sure if you need to stratify them. I put them in the freeze for convenience. But, as you can see from the video, it worked.

    I just got goji berry seeds in the mail. I’m in zone 6b/7a. Is it too late to start now?

  • @MidwestGardener

    @MidwestGardener

    No, it's not too late, but they probably won't produce berries till next year. They grow pretty slow at first, but then pick up speed later on. And the bigger the pot the better for growing them, unless you are growing them in the ground. They they can really spread. Good luck!

    Midwest Gardener thank you, you made my day!!! I didn’t even know I could grow Goji in my area. I’m so excited, I’m going to plant today. I will follow your directions and just plant in a medium pot and skip the seed starter kit lol

    How could it possible to have berries in 6 months ? Sorry my English is not good but from your subtitle I understand that your plant produce fruit in 6 months from seed. I grow from seeds but even after 3 years not a single sign of flower.

    I'm not sure what could be the problem with yours, Sonam. The ones I grew from seeds produced very well the next year. They usually grow very well and if planted in the ground, will even spread.

    I've been interested in the experience of growing them, but to tell you the truth....even though they are supposed to be very nutritious, I don't like the taste very well. Using them in smoothies is about all we've found to use them in. At some point, I'll probably give it to someone.

    That's interesting that the dried ones taste better than the fresh ones. The ones that I've eaten were fresh. My wife likes them on her salads, so that works for her. Thanks for sharing your experience with them. It's always good to hear how different plants do for different people in different zones. Sounds like you like to experiment with different things just for the enjoyment of it.....I can relate to that :)
