    as someone who graduated General Assmbly's UXDI bootcamp in January 2020, I honestly feel very bad for anyone whos done the UX bootcamps this year. You did yours in 2017, and even in 2018 it was probably a lot easier, but nowadays, there are SO MANY UX bootcamps out there. Companies get so many bootcamp grads applying that they almost automatically next them. I kept at it all year and finally got an offer this week. I know there were 2 cohorts after mine, and I know that most students in my class stopped applying because they had no luck. I applied for over 200 jobs during this time. For anyone that is out there looking right now, I wish you the best of luck! I'll be making a video on my experience as well soon!

    Hi Tony! I completely agree with you, 2020 is definitely not a great year. When I signed up for mine back in late 2017, it was right before the UX design industry began to get oversaturated, so thankfully I got in right before. But in 2020, there is definitely a lot of different challenges that one has to face. I'm hoping to do a video soon, giving my honest opinion on ux bootcamps. Thank you for watching!

I'm curious to hear how you navigate one, cuz yeah, you're 'just asking questions,' but there's usually a subtext of 'I want your help applying to a job.' So how do you make informational interviews feel genuine and friendly, and not ulterior-motive-y? I'd also love to see an interview just about your design challenge, maybe even re-enacting it and showing us how you thought it through. This was so useful and I'm sure it'll help a lot of people! • @WesleyHongUX

    Hey Matt, I appreciate the kind words! Most bootcamps should teach you both the UX and UI aspect of design. I'd say most of the time they do put more focus on UX over UI. In my opinion, UI is more of a technical skill that anyone can learn through technical practice, but UX is more of an intricate process of learning empathy, user research, communication, and problem-solving. You'll probably learn a decent of amount of UI fundamentals through the program, so you should be good! I'd say do read a good amount of articles on best UI practices, Medium has plenty. Best of luck!

    I think that many people jump into UX design without really asking the most important question which is, “Is UX design for me and do I enjoy doing it?” I am taking a free course from Coursera to help me answer that question. I suggest those who don’t know UX like myself do the same before putting money down.

    100% agreed Jack, I do feel like some people are jumping the gun, into ux design. I would recommend taking as much free classes as you can, see if this is something you seriously want to do, and then pay for a better education and learning (college, bootcamp, etc).

    Hi Wesley, not sure if I missed it but will you share what’s your background in? Educational/industrial etc.. I’ve found that lots of companies are prone to hire you if you have qualifications or working experience in cs/engineering/design and are not keen to hire you if you have something that’s irrelevant to it.

  • @WesleyHongUX

    @WesleyHongUX

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jaline, Before my UX design career, I used to work in marketing and project management, with start-ups and agencies. What you say is somewhat true, but not impossible. Even if you don't have prior design/tech/cs/engineering experience, you can always talk about how your previous experience could be helpful and relevant towards what you'll be doing in your new ux career. For example, a high school teacher who is looking to become a ux designer... You can easily talk about how empathy was one of your main strengths when it comes to interacting with students and their parents, and how you will use your empathy skills and communication when it comes to doing user research. You could also talk about how you problem-solved a solution for when you had to deal with a rebellious, trouble-making student. There's always a way for you to bridge and connect your different experiences, especially when it comes to job interviews...in terms of how you go about doing that, that's all up to you! I hope this helps!

    Do you think UX Design will still be relevant over the next 10 years?

    IMO, absolutely! As long as technology is still around and it continues to improve as the years go by, there will be a lot of opportunity for UX design to come in and be a part of that process!

    I graduated from Springboard in November 2020 and I have not even been able to get a freaking interview. I'm so pissed off.

    Hang in there! Highly recommend networking as much as you can, do 1-on-1 calls, and find a mentor! Those will increase your chances! Best of luck!

    @@WesleyHongUX Yeah I've been doing a lot of 1 on 1 calls. How do you ask someone to be your mentor? I've wanted to a few times but don't know the appropriate way to do it.
