How I got into Knives and outdoor gear - The 1980s!

I count myself as very lucky. Those of us who spent our childhoods in the 1980s were probably the last generation to be able to take calculated risks without Government oversight. The latch key generation. While our parents were busy working, we were busy playing soldiers in the woods, crafting dens and hunting ghosts! During that time I began using knives for woodcraft and it was completely acceptable. Of course today a bunch of 8yr olds cutting up fallen branches to make bows and arrows would probably be frowned upon and we would be rushed to a social worker for our own safety. I credit those glorious times to my ability to get stuff done now without turning life into a huge drama. In this video I talk about my experience using those knives as a child and how that shaped my interests today.

Sounds like you had a great childhood. Lovely to see that you kept the Disney knife and held on to your interest. I imagine your knives are a straight pathway to pure, childhood joy. I grew up in the 80s too. My brother had an air rifel and a swiss army knife 🙂. I was busy caring for horses. That was my world. Horses are only a fragment of my life now. But that fragment gives me so much joy ✨. Hold on to your passion ♥️

I look back at that decade with such joy. It held such mystery for us as kids. Rumours of ghosts, hidden treasures and mythical unexplored underground hideaways. There was no internet so none of it could be fact checked from your bedroom. You had to go and explore yourself. Fantastic long summers which we joyfully used to explore the world around us with naive fascination. Im glad to hear you remain in touch with part of your childhood as well 💕

Grew up in that same era. Great memories much like you described. I made sure my children had a similar experience. Hopefully they'll look back one day and reminisce of BB guns and slinging arrows.

I can totally relate to this, I can even remember when I was 12 getting a Swiss army knife for Christmas, and decided to open up all the blades to see what there was which resulted in me cutting my finger open lol and I agree if someone was aderment about killing someone you could just as well use a fork off the table,

I remember it also having a few fishing hooks and line in plastic with those matches inside that cheap plastic handle. And a grey sharpening block in a pocket on the knife holder.

I remember a time were those criminals used (how do you name it?) Spokes? From a bicycles wheel and put them in there sleeves. If they stabbed someone they could go trough your liver and or kidneys, nasty things...

Was that in the 80s? My Mum was always scared we would get attacked by glue sniffers or given sweets laced with lsd. Ah the 80s!

@@thatgearguy Could be the 80's also but i can remember seeing it on a television serie that was about crime and asking people to help with cases by asking if anyone had seen anything about that subject of that day. It was called " Opsporing verzocht" But about the stabbing with those spokes was somewhere in the early 90's. Hahaha, yes mothers... Same things i was told. Now i have the same worry's with our daughter to be honest. All those designer drugs these days don't make it less of a thing.

But my comment was not really about the 80's but more like you said about, criminals don't use expensive quality knifes. That's what made me remember the stabbings with the spokes. As for being given candy with dope on it. Over here the sometimes find gummybears (soft candy) with some new kind of drug in it on playgrounds. Pretty sick thing if you ask me.
