Your advice is golden. As someone who did the same program successfully, and was able to get into one of my top choice med schools the following year, I️ can echo all you said. It’s definitely stressful, but the time you put into it is what you get out of it. I️ was in the program during COVID, which made it very hard to find study groups. Classes were online most of the time. Everything was closed (library, etc) so finding study spaces was a drag. But…YOU MAKE IT WORK! No excuses. You find the time and the place to study and you study! If you want it you have to make it happen for yourself. I️ had gross roommates, but I️ did not let that distract me. I️ had loud neighbors, but I️ still found ways to tune them out and study. The results come not from the obstacles you face but the ways you find to mitigate and overcome those obstacles. I’m finally starting med school and I️ feel incredibly invigorated by the future trek before me. And KZread channels like these should inspire you because as a more Christian friend of mine once told me “God’s time is perfect”. I’m not super religious, but it was her way of saying now is when it will be the best time for you. And I️ feel that and I️ have experiences that will certainly help me help patients and classmates and connect with others on a more personal level. I️ hope people reading this and watching these videos continue to strive and work hard and become physicians, PAs, nurses, pharmacists, or whatever your dream is. It’s all possible, just embrace your supporters, let go of your haters, and press on.

Hello Dr. Douglas, I wanted to start out by thanking you for sharing these videos. It's inspiring to see fellow people of color like yourself accomplishing their goals. By continuing to making these videos you're leaving a guide for those after you to follow, please continue as you are able. I am a non-traditional student who is entering university for the first time. I would really appreciate it if you made a video (or just left me a comment) on specific study techniques/strategies you use to succeed. Thanks again, and may you have great success!

Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot! Congrats on your new journey as well. Here are Some specific study techniques: - efficient studying : when reading text book chapters pause after each section within the chapter and ask yourself if you understand the concepts discussed. Go back and re read if you don’t, sometimes you’ll realize that you zoned out and didn’t even really read the section -active learning: taking a few notes while reading can help some people. Things that were hard to remember I’d write over and over again so it stuck. Practice questions after learning a section helps solidify what you learned and identify gaps in knowledge - seeking out extra resources when needed: when topics are hard to grasp id try to see if I’d understand it better by reading it more than once, or using a video which may help me better understand Those Are just a few tips. I just might make a video to give more tips and details!

USF masters of science in medical sciences. I didn’t apply to that many programs: I chose based on location, cost, mcat assistance , how supportive I thought it would be and the classes I would take in the program (I wanted advanced science courses that were similar to what med students would take )
