Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I'll go through the last few months of progress in my backhand form. It includes getting professional coaching, building a new teepad, getting a speed radar, and LOTS of practice :) I hope you enjoy!

That is an AMAZING price, here in the states I don't see anything under 200 USD (not sure how that converts). Might be worth it if they ship, looks very useful. Even if it is inaccurate it still shows immediate feedback on if tweaks bring your speed up. Critical information! Also any tips on overcoming the "grind" aspect of this kind of technique training? I HATE putting in the backyard, I love throwing the field because it's so much more rewarding, I get to watch the disc fly! How do you make a net throw rewarding to make me WANT to do the work?

Thanks! I was thinking about this too, but delayed in asking until now. This "curiosity" is fascinating. It doesn't die. It's just the days of rest that are needed that can be frustrating. Don't worry about the physics too much. Your mind is a super fantastic computer in itself. You can figure out the right calculations after you do it. Just throw. Then look at it later. 🙂

Yeah I haven’t been able to buy a radar yet, too expensive here in the states unless you want to risk buying something with VERY low reviews.

I cannot over-exaggerate how well made and thought out this video is. It's not often I leave comments on videos, but this is outstanding. More than just the top tier editing and camera work, the things that you're saying are so well constructed and based in reality that it's beautiful to sit and listen to. I really am blown away by the caliber of your work. Time to go practice.

I obsessed over hammer throw form for 15 years, at one point being ranked #12 in the US, long after leaving college and making big sacrifices to follow my curiosity and continue training. I found you through my love of disc golf, but what you touch on here is much bigger than disc golf, or throwing, or sports (though it's incredibly spot on those topics). I've been watching throwing videos since VHS tapes. I've coached and been coached by world record holders at camps and clinics. I have to say what you've done in your videos is something extremely special. It's making accessible something very precious that I can't quite explain. I don't know what compliment I can give. This is wonderful.

I had the same "ah-hah!" Moment with grip 2 summers ago. Putting my thumb back more on the plate did it for me as well. Watching Gavin Rathbun throw is what made me try it as his thumb is as far onto the flight plate as I've ever seen a pro's grip. This is by far some of the best form content on KZread and I want to explain exactly why I think so. Having coached a lot of different sports in my younger days (most notably light athletics spring, triple jump and long jump at the national elite level), my understanding was always that it is easy to see what someone does wrong but it is much harder to know what to say in order for this person to improve. This is where mental images come in which is what you stress so much and I think are right on point. Also, while you are going into a lot of detail, none of it seems unnecessary, your analyses are novel, and you are really homing in on the real keys to a successful throw. I've always also thought the it is much harder for a natural talent who does things correctly by intuition to successfully teach/coach (although there are exceptions), whereas those who have struggled and really put their time into understanding the mechanics and learned them selves the hard way may find it much easier to explain for others as well. Furthermore, you realise that this is your path, and you are just sharing what works for you, and it may not be what works for some one else. In this case, however, I think you are on to something that most disc golfers (who do not already do this naturally) can benefit from. Especially the twisting of the off arm/shoulder is something that I will definitely bring into my own game, and I think it is actually imperative to keeping your head from turning with the body and getting more energy from the brace transferred through the body to the disc. I already have a relatively active off arm so this should be easy, but my own main technical struggles are that I turn back too much, and my heel does not rotate in the brace. While I have been aware of this for probably 2 years now, I just can't seem to find a way to change this, but I will not give up!

It's far more relatable and quite inspiring. My job is running a team of post-grad lecturers. We have a lot of hugely academically qualified people wanting to join the team but they often can't explain the concepts to people that don't already understand. You have a talent for breaking the points you want to make into very clear and understandable directions. It's a real skill and something quite rare. Also, the production quality is very high.

Thanks for a very interesting and helpful video! At 19:28 it’s scary how similar my journey to finding the beauty in the back hand throw form is to yours. I also wasn’t hooked the first time I played disc golf, but for some reason I just started to enjoy it a lot after one specific round. I found Jomez Pro, watched tournaments and started grinding towards the perfect back hand form. It really sounded like you described my journey. My first goal was to reach 100+ m one shot. I got it down after a few weeks. Now it is 120+ m one shot and 100+ m consistently. You obviously have gotten much farther than I have, but I hope to get it next season with as much practice as possible during my off-season parental leave :) Looking forward to the next video!

I noticed that Paul McBeth does this action on EVERY throw even touch putter shots. And then you have Garrett Gurthie, who has been seen actually holding the "table cloth" during a max distance throw, he'll have his towel in his left hand and now it makes sense to me.

Yours is the best and most scientific approach to improving on KZread, that I’ve found, and as a former teacher whose father has a masters degree in physics, I want to let you know how much I appreciate your approach to this! I’ve mentioned on some other channels my idea, but I think you might be the person who will most be interested in this. I’d love to see different discs and how they behave under various conditions in a wind or water tunnel. It would be great to see the amount of drag, lift…etc depending on different disc models, forward momentum, acceleration and speed, along with the effects that the rate of spin on the disc would have on the flight, drag, lift…etc., as well. I am just not sure who would have access to a means to do all of these tests, but perhaps you can ask around using KZread as a platform.

I had an “Aha” moment today as I was doing field work. I reference your first video all the time and was very excited to watch your new video. Thank you for breaking this down so that I can understand easier. I also now to want to go finish/find more things on my life map! I could only imagine how in depth your video on forehands will be! Because I need help with that as well lol Thank you!

I echo other comments. This is THE most informative video I have seen regarding the backhand DG throw. Not just the technical aspect but the expected emotional pain when it gets worse and stiffer before it gets better. And your final thoughts about goals and how curiosity makes them happen is just a fantastic piece of information 👍

Finally someone that talks about the biomechanics of a throw rather just talking about solely feel. Many people like to teach how they learned not how it relates to people. When you teach biomechanics it starts the same for everyone.

Yes! (To it All!). After watching your first entry of this series, I incorporated a few tips (delayed reach back and 90 degrees). Hello +50 feet! We each have our plateaus, and I’ve not only been stuck, but (almost) had come to accept I’ll never throw X feet. (unique distance for each individual). Your philosophy and process have inspired me: To accept the challenge. To have a plan. To do the work. Tweak. Then do more work, celebrating the small steps along the way. Thanks for helping me think of disc golf for the transcendent activity I’ve always knew was possible.

Love the series! I have a tip for you that might be worth exploring. This helped me a lot after I started reaching a plateau with my progress. This has to do with footwork so you can tangle your feet once more 😄 Try planting your front support foot more rearward of your aiming/throwing line. In your case this would mean moving your right foot more right to allow for more upper body rotation and more room for your pelvis to open up. Shortening your cross-step might help with this! I think Simon Lizotte explains this nicely. Keep it up! 💪

I am revisiting this as a slightly more experienced disc golfer who has now thrown over 400' and is getting 350' to 380' consistently - and I am in awe of how well you did this video. It is still more information that will help with my consistency and further distance. Again, thank you!

I love the videos and the analysis! I would like to add that the comparison of the “old” and “new” forms also shows that you rotate much further at the peak in the newer video and this might have the largest impact.

Great vid, it's fun following your disc golf journey! I think we're on parallel paths (even though I'm probably 30yrs older than you :) because I've been adjusting my grip in similar ways (including really experimenting with the "pinch" between thumb and forefinger) which has been giving me more speed and distance with less stress on my body. I'm looking forward to whatever you put up next.
