Thanks Steve! This one probably missed the mark though. But I think it is really easy, at least for me, to get rid of hair algae.

He's wonderful; reminds me of Ben Ochart on the freshie side in that watching his videos doesn't feel like watching a "youtuber", it feels like talking aquariums with a friend.

I’m pretty new to the hobby so take this not as gospel. But have been battling GHA for 1.5 years and finally had time to do some research. Specifically for hair algae, I think the ratio of phosphates to nitrates is important, which is just echoing what others have said (Claude from Fauna Marin being one of those people). Aim for nitrates to be 100x or higher than phosphates. So if phosphates are 0.15 ppm, you’d want atleast 15 ppm of nitrates. Best easy way to do this is to reduce phosphates with GFO. Do it slowly and test everyday has been my approach. Also, you can reduce light intensity and photoperiod. Manual pulling, increase CUC, scrub rocks with toothbrush inside of tank is okay if you are getting it into a filter sock or similar or you can scrub in bucket of tank water from a water change. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing! Yeah I think that no matter what the nutrient levels are, without a cuc, algae will grow. They eat it when it is so small that we can hardly see it. That gives the illusion that we don’t have any algae, as the cuc did its job. If you still have hair algae, I highly recommend getting a snail or critter per gallon. It will be gone within a week in most cases. Or things like sea hares work as well, but they may have to be rehomed after eating it all.

Check your mag too. I have heard low mag can let algae go crazy. Most definitely snails are your best friend. Plus no quick cure for it. If it too 6 mouths to get an algae problem it’s will take 6 months to get out it!!
