    Thank you for sharing this personal story and for being honest. I started in a similar way - I've read an ebook, practiced, practiced, practiced and than call my best friend who worked at a car parts dealership and said: Your current website is old and I can make you a better one for free (so I could create a portfolio).

    I am so glad I found your channel! I am brand new and want to start web design and I am confident I can improve many of the websites I see, but I feel so intimidated. What you shared here is so helpful, I’ll also ask my friends to start sharing!

    This is very inspiring. I've been doing graphic design for a few years and I'm looking to diversify into more of web and product design. Just started learning Webflow and I'm getting a hang of it. I believe I will be getting my very first web design client soon

    Sorry for posting another comment, but something Ive been wondering is how to revamp an existing website without a long downtime? I’ve heard of staging and local hosting, but cant find anything much on these. What would you recommend?

    Hi Payton, how do you approach migrating an old site to a new one? Would you redirect the whole site? I am not really sure how this would work, any help would be great, thanks

    Hi there, new subscriber here, I have been going through some videos and thought I would ask, will I come across videos that go through the steps to prevent the wrong settings in i.e. DNS settings, scheduling, etc? If it's a course instead, i'm interested. I like the honesty about the journey, too many others let their ego get in the way.

    For beginners, what are your thoughts on: 1. Finding a poorly designed simple website. 2. Doing a simple re-design and then 2. Showing the business the new site with an offer to sell it to them?

  • @PaytonClarkSmith

    Great question! Here are my thoughts: 1. This could end up being a lot of work that you aren’t guaranteed to get paid for. (If you can do it quickly enough that it doesn’t suck if you don’t get paid, then maybe it’s worth it) 2. It will be harder to charge more if the project is already done. In their mind it is less work for you because it’s already done and they didn’t have to stand by and watch the work that went into it. They will most likely want to pay way less because they know you are the one who is invested in this thing (not them). 3. If you do this for a business owner you know and think they would be a really good prospect, it could be with it! I think at the end of the day, you should do whatever it takes to find new work but don’t over commit and waste too much time! Best of luck!

    Thanks for sharing your story. How do you navigate your first client expecting a "discount" because they know your cousin or dad? How do you know what to price your first website?

  • @PaytonClarkSmith

    @PaytonClarkSmith

    4 жыл бұрын

    lemon.pepper you might have to offer some sort of discount to get your first project done. However, this doesn’t mean you should be getting paid dirt! Raise your prices enough before the discount that your prices still make sense to you. No, you won’t get paid as much in your first project as you will months down the road but you can still get pay to get them out. Pricing is a difficult question but you just need to decide how much you need to be able to dedicate the time to get the project done. For me my first project was $800 and that ended up not being enough for me so I don’t think you should have any second thoughts about charging at least $1000 for a website.
