How I Fly For FREE! | Airline Pilot Explains

Flight benefits like jumpseating and Zed Fares allow pilots / flight attendants and cabin crew to travel for free and near free, but what does it REALLY mean and what are the risks? I explain it here...

My wife works for an airlines and we have spent many many hours sitting in airports hoping a seat comes available but you learn when to travel and when not to travel. Strange as it may sound if you are flying for a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas you stand a better chance of getting a flight if you fly the day of the holiday instead of before or after and you take any seat that is available. But, it's free so you get what you pay for...

Also the cost of an airline ticket is not that much when u still have to pay for hotels and car rentals etc. I have a friend who will get me 1st class upgrades but I still have to pay for a regular ticket.

Another great vid Kelsey - I love your energy! I have experienced this - all the 'free' flights I took whilst working for an airline still attracted taxes, even if the flight itself was free - and all were 'sub load ' - as you said, it depended on what the load for that flight was. I just booked a return LHR - SFO and it's interesting the fare breakdown. My economy ticket cost £408 return - out on A380 back on my ❤️ 747 - the taxes are actually more than the cost of the flight - bonkers - it's still a really low cost. Can't wait to be in the air again- love your channel 👍✈️

One thing i miss from when I was in the air force. We could do free “hops” from base to base if we wanted to travel for free. If you didn’t mind sitting on a canvas seat in a cargo hold. I remember one flight I had on a C130. No bathroom. Had to pee in a funnel at the back of the plane near the cargo door. Lol

Cissy2cute its true. You can. At least when I served. Not a very comfortable flight though. 12 of us in the hold. Hard seats. No potties or flight attendants. Pilots forgot to turn the heat on. 30,000 ft its sub zero in the hold. All of us were low ranking scrubs. Pilots are captain’s and lieutenants. I finally mustered the nerve to say “ hey, y’all got a heater on this thing?(no flight deck door) pilot responded “ oh shit, my bad sorry about that” and turned the heater on! Lol

Kelsey, Thanks for the videos explaing the ins and out of being a pilot. It would be awesome if you could collaborate with pilots at various stages of their careers, and in various capacities that pilots can take, and have them talk about the road they took, to give us new pilots a general idea of how to accomplish our dreams. I just became a Commercial Pilot (married with five kids) having a hard time deciding if I should shoot for the airlines or possibly justing trying to have a good QOL. Anyway, LOVE your channel!

My father was a pilot. We travelled 3-4 times a year. We spent endless hours waiting for flights to close and get our boarding passes. Sometimes having to find an hotel at 11pm. Lots of stress for my father who always got angry at my sister and I. Not a lot of good memories beside returning abandoned carts to collect a quarter while waiting for the boarding passes. Now airport don't give a quarter back anymore so that must be a pain for today's kids. I spent 8 hours on a jumpseat by an emergency exit when I was 10. That was a loooonngg trip. I don't travel anymore now, Even as a paying customer, the wait is way too long at airports, specially if you're an "alien" comming into the US and have to wait an extra 3 hours at the customs. I'm 40 and I had enough of that crap when I was a kid.

It's also a lot harder to non-rev now than it used to be. Most flights are usually full or full up quick. Additionally, if another non-rev with more seniority jumps in, they can bump you off.

I was waiting for space A on a C 141in jersey to go to CA. ÙSA. I got bumped by colonels being a lowly sergeant on the way to Virginia. Some of us stayed in a hotel overnight. The weather was rain & wind. We picked up another 141 and got bumped again. Ended up in st. Louis, Misouri still in rain. Got bumped again and got in a renta car drove in rain to a commercial airport with a fighter pilot speeding at night and took a TWA plane to san Diego finally. It took us 3 days and 450 dollars in the long run. Its not all its cracked up to be. From then on.I just book a flight and make my move. It was an adventure but not fun.

My Father worked for AA for 30 years 1951-1981 and we always would fly free ( his family). No problem to DFW or DC or such because of all the flights each day. Never could get to Honolulu or Orlando because people wanted to go there and flight were impacted. I took a zed fare to Frankfort for $125 when a fare was $1,250. That was the golden age of flying and pre frequent flyer upgrade days so the empty seats were always in first class. I was grown up before I had to travel in the cattle car and it was quite the shock.

2001 I had the opportunity to fly on a JumpSeat in the cockpit on a 737 Lufthansa flight from Düsseldorf to Munich. That was a quite interesting experience. But you are totally right: It's everything else than comfortable. I also had the opportunity to take some "StandBy-Flights" to Spain but never without at least 8-10 hours of waiting for the next plane.

Had the opportunity to fly back to Honolulu for son's graduation party. A old college friend of mine who worked for an airline, offered me a discount using a pass that she was able to give to friends and family. I viewed it as an adventure, because there was a chance I would not get a seat. Luckily, for the round trip I was able to board both flights, everything worked out. I surprised my family and had a great time. The gate agents could have been nicer to me. Love the videos, Kelsey!

I’ve been a SA on UA for about 15 years and I can remember only once I got stuck in HK for 3 days. In the morning of the flight I check how many seats are available and as long as it’s overbooked by 15 or less I go to the airport there’s so many detract ions in Vegas people just can’t make that 15 minute window. I’m also flexible once I was on the way to London and went to Tokyo instead.

My brother used to work the cargo desk for Alaska Airlines. The first day he was eligible for non-rev flights, we dropped the niece off at daycare and flew a Horizon Air -8 from Seattle to Portland, had lunch at the airport, and flew back. The only cost was for lunch. It was pretty cool.

As a US flyer I've noticed there is a big difference between domestic and overseas travel for the airline employees - and I've noticed it because of how much it impacts the frequent flyers like me. On many US carriers in the domestic market frequent flyers are provided an "upgrade" based on availability of seats in the premium cabin. That lets the airline massively overbook coach because they know any "displaced" customers will end up being upgraded. So, nonrevs and ID-90s really have to find the non peak flights on low travel days... BUT things are quite different on the overseas flights. The upgrades on overseas flights are "paid" with miles, vouchers, or fees - but are not "complimentary" the way they are domestically. And, the company will try and preserve the value of the premium cabin by restricting the number of seats available for upgrade - often preferring to move an empty seat and not clearing a requested paid upgrade. My angst is often triggered in this situation when I try and use miles to upgrade and out of the 20ish seats that are available in the premium cabin (out of 40+ total seats) the airline will not release any of those seats for upgrade until the day of departure - and only the upgrade vouchers will transfer to the airport upgrade standby list - not the miles upgrades - meaning most of those seats will remain unfilled by those requesting upgrades and are therefore available for nonrevs and buddy passes to use instead... A tad frustrating...

My father was an Airline pilot and back in the late 70's I'd travel non-rev allot. Always got 1st class back then too. I'd have a book of employee tickets and a flight schedule and hop across the country. Was allot of fun. After deregulation it became almost impossible to do this, and I never flew first class unless I paid for it.

I work on the ramp for a major airline's regional carrier at a small airport. We have non-rev privileges also, however we have a lower priority than the mainline folks. We also have to pay a small amount, but its a fraction of even a basic economy ticket. After a year, we get ZED privileges too. Oh, another thing, when non-rev-ing, the value of the ticket is considered imputed income and you have to pay tax on it.

I once dated an AWA FA and we got stuck in SJO for 3 days because of W&B. The plane also kept leaving with at least 10 empty seats! On the 3rd or 4th day, they (literally) "pencil-whipped" our boarding passes and said "take any seat". The crew heard about us and gave us at least 2-3 free drinks (in coach) before take off. I actually enjoyed that whole experience. Because of her I have a few friends that are Crew and I think you all are extremely cool and fun! Next time you're in DFW, let's have a beer! btw, not a pilot (or crew) but I do work for an airline in DFW.

When I was working for AA my wife would sometimes come with me on layovers. I was doing JFK to San Jose, CA one month, and she listed as a non-rev and came with me to the airport early in the morning. What neither of us paid any attention to was that there had been thunderstorms mucking up the schedule and causing a lot of cancellations the afternoon and evening before. The next morning passengers for the Bay Area were trying to get home any way they could, and they didn't care if they went to SFO, OAK, or SJC. The flight was over booked, and my wife ended up taking a limo back home. So, as was already said, you get what you pay for. The "free" airline travel works well when it works, but it can go down the tubes for many reasons.

Other advantage of your own airline is you can see how many seats are available. Even a wide open flight can screw you if a prior flight gets cancelled and they have to rebook pax. I briefly had a CS line where I had Monday/Tuesday off, try flying non rev on Monday... Be prepared to fly at 5 or 6am to have a good chance.

Decades ago, when I was at university, there was a thing called "space available"--I don't know if that still exists--where you could buy a reduced-priced ticket that guaranteed you almost nothing. You got a seat only if the airline couldn't find a better use for it and only if the plane was going in more or less the right direction. My most "adventurous" flight on that basis was: Ithaca (NY) -- Elmira (NY) -- LaGuardia -- Kennedy (by bus) -- Chicago Midway -- Chicago Ohare (by helicopter) -- Las Vegas -- Los Angeles -- San Francisco -- back to Los Angeles -- and (exhausted) home to Honolulu. All with an enormous suitcase -- it was the end of the school year and I was going home for the summer. Not a lot of fun. (Back then, if you were associated with the military, you could get rides on military aircraft. HNL -- Travis AFB in a B-52 was remarkably uncomfortable; the same trip in a then-new C-5 was a lot nicer.)

If you don't plan well a non rev or Z or ZED fair can be more expensive than a full fare ticket. Getting stuck in a place like JFK and buying hotels for a few days due to full flights can be more expensive than having a full fare ticket and being able to get where you are going. But with good planing you can fly all over fairly cheap and if you average the cost of sometimes buying tickets and reduced cost of non rev or zed it is a lot cheaper in the long run. The other side benefit is you do not need to worry if you change your plans and decide to go a different day. You can cancel or change plans anytime you please. Down side of cheap travel is you mostly have to go when most other people don't want to go there and most of the time there is a reason people visit places at different times of the year. Example is you want to do something that takes hot summer weather but you could only get there in October or early March. Or you want to ski and you can only get there in the summer months. In those cases it really doesn't matter if you can fly cheaper on your benefits you are going to buy tickets if you really want to be there at those times. Only exception is you are traveling alone and you can jumpseat and do not have to worry about someone traveling with you getting on. Jumpseat travel is just about as sure as a full fare ticket, except a lot of times you have to sit in a very uncomfortable seat.

I can assure you all that when you try to get yourself and your family back home on ‘staff travel’ and things don’t go your way, it can be very stressful. Eg when you have a sick infant that you want to get back home but a bus tour of passengers missed the last flight the night before so all those empty seats this morning are now full. So much so that despite having really high priority (among the staff) due to years of service and position in the company, my last family holiday that involved flying, I found it far easier to book 9 months in advance full fare tickets like everyone else. Early bird tickets come cheaper and the airline will look after you if things go bad unlike staff travel. I must admit that I miss those business class seats n meals however.

I work for the Ramp for an airline and we fly for free or nonrev. I have flew on the cabin jump seat (not the cockpit unless you are a pilot) cause the flight was full. For Jump seat comes with restrictions, We cant listen to music or fall asleep and the flight attendant let me helped them was really cool. When I nonrev with my wife, i always have a backup with different airlines so i can get back home. Is one of the greatest benefits out there.

One of my friends was married to a flight attendant. According to him, they had a "buddy pass" system, which allowed him and his friends to fly anywhere. All they had to do was pay the taxes on the ticket, but the flight itself was free. My friend and his wife eventually divorced however, which meant no more free flights, which kinda pissed me off since I never got to use this buddy pass.

As an E4 in the US Marines, I used "Space Available" to fly from NAS Glenview to MCAS Cherry Pt.. The 1st leg cost me $10 for Glenview to NAS Indianapolis in a twin turboprop 9 seater with 6 other Navy Chiefs. When I get to Indianapolis, I find out that the flight was cancelled and I was stuck. While on the phone trying to get to the East coast, one of the pilots that flew me from Glenview asked if I needed help. They said they could "use the extra flight time - we'll take you as far as Norfolk VA." So for another $10, I was the only passenger for the next 700 miles. Sooo, when I get to Norfolk, I am approaching the desk when this E7 (Gunnery Sgt) was raising quite a fit because his flight was cancelled and he had 70 Marines that NEEDED to be at MCB Lejeune (NC) by 1800 or there will be a major @$$ kicking and it won't be his. I waited a few minutes for the air temperature to cool off a bit, then introduced my self to him and explained that I too am trying to get to Cherry Pt (a mere 40 miles from Lejeune) and asked if I could hitch a ride. I ended up checking in 15 minutes late. Not bad since I had 2 of my 3 flights cancelled - and it only cost me $20.

As a retiree from United Airlines with a 40 year work record , retired-in 1998 ,The glamour is not what it used to be, Years ago If you were a retiree with 25 years or more of service you would get what was called a "Golden pass" which meant if there were seats you were number 1 to board. Now a employee with 6 months of service who is a working employee would go ahead of you. The taxes were waved but now you pay the taxes. One other feature we can pick 2 enrolled friends twice a year to fly on our passes which is great but the discounted fare is added to a W2 and you get it as income at the end of the year. You also every four months are mailed the accumulated taxes from all the flights you or your enrolled friends used. I like the enrolled friend end of the deal seeing my granddaughter flies to every city in Europe United serves and most of South America. So that's the good and the bad .Her boarding priority is low even with my years of service unless I fly with her , which I don't. She has learned it's a must to have a backup plan like a purchased ticket on a another flight. Seeing you can't hold a ticket plus standby for the same trip. Also we stay away from Holidays ! unless you enjoy spending all day on standby and at times have to turn around and go home. She got stuck in Argentina for 3 days before we bought a ticket on a cheaper Airline ! "Life of a Stand by"

You're generally going to fly from your location. But when you don't you will likely jumpseat with your airline to where you need to go. That's what happened with that United flight where they dragged the doctor off the plane. Crew members had to get to a destination and therefore they removed passengers.

Thanks for an informative video! I knew about jump seats but not non-rev or zed fare. Here’s a question and maybe a video topic. I’m a semi-professional musician and 20 years ago I insanely checked my expensive wooden bassoon with luggage (I know!!), landed in France to find the glue that held all the pads in, which make it playable, totally fell out. The changes in temperature and air pressure cracked the wood, froze the pad glue, etc. It was awful and that mistake cost over $1500 to repair. Now I travel at times with a French Horn, a Cello or a Bassoon. One at a time, but mainly by car, I have not played abroad in many years. After seeing this video I would hate for my hard-shell case cello to bump a pilot! Would that happen? What are your thoughts around inanimate items in passenger seats, and advice for musicians, or, what is the difference between my family-heirloom bassoon and “cabin baggage”? Like I said, maybe a video topic. 😊 🎻🎺 ✈️ Love your videos!
