How I fixed my SP with flickering power LED and intermittent power

Ойындар

Here's the short version: • GBA power switch teard...
Yes that's a GBA console but this issue is a problem with all Game Boy consoles and the solution is the same for all of them. If your power light flickers or sometimes your GB just doesn't even turn on, this what you need to do.
Please excuse the last test, I have two identical batteries on my desk and it turns out that only one of them was charged.

Good video, but always turn screws left until it clicks into place before going right when you put them back in. That will set the screw to the original threading and prevent it from making new threads and damaging the plastic.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video! I've had a GBA SP 101 that had the light flash between green and red all the time. I could get it to stop for a short while, if I pressed on the shell, right about the power switch. I thought for the longest time, it was a battery connection issue. After watching this, I decide to give it a try, and I think it fixed my issue, might be still to early to tell. I normally could replicate the issue right away, each time I tried a new "fix", but so far I haven't been able to. So thank you again!

Thumbs upped and subscribed. I have to admit when I first watched your vid I thought it was dumb -- boy was I wrong. My board looked great and there was zero sign of corrosion but after testing the charging port and the two main fuses with a multimeter I was baffled and check and traced so many points of continuity that I began researching the boards and looking for what might be wrong when I saw someone post a comment describing exactly what you did in this video -- so I came back, watched again and pulled out the soldering iron and an exacto knife and did exactly as you did. My GBA SP AG 101 now charges and it's all thanks to you. Great vid-- you're helping people out there, so keep up the good work!

Hey anyone who is coming to this and wants to quickly understand how to fix this. The problem is the power switch itself. You have dissemble the Gameboy, solder the shield off the power switch, take it apart and clean the insides with isopropyl alcohol. You better be comfortable with solder! The problem this fixes is when the power LED flashes red/green or it switches off. Thanks Makho for making this video!

i finished installing an ips kit and everything went smooth. i wanted to clean the power switch while i had the soldering iron out and no matter what, that top metal cap of the power switch would not come off. i don't want to hold the iron tip to it for too long but i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. EDIT: i finally got it but i'm not entirely sure what i did. the small metal in the white plastic piece came off while i was cleaning it. took 30 minutes to find it but it was pure luck that i did. had to use superglue to get it to stay on the white tab. everything's working now. thanks makho for your video. i really appreciate it!

My cobalt blue SP is acting strange. That's the only way I can describe it. It never fails to turn on but the light flickers from green to red then sometimes either freezes or powers off a few mins into gameplay. I assumed it was the battery dying so I replaced it but nothing changed. Will I follow your steps here and clean the power switch or do you think the issue is more complex? Thanks

Hi Makho. What do you think is causing this strange behavior with the red light? (Ags-101) If you press the brightness button, the screen will become brighter, but the red light will light up, and if you set a darker mode, the green light will light up. This is a fairly common problem, but I haven't found a solution to it.

  • @makho

higher brightness requires more power. More power means the voltage drops. Lower voltage means low power light. Clean your power switch then replace your battery.

@@makho Thank you very much, thanks to your idea with the power supply, I found a problem. I put wireless charging on. And your battery mod. Apparently not correctly connected wireless charging and burned f2. In its place, I put another fuse, which is similar in parameters (but still different). And here was the problem. All these problems with turning off the console and other bad behavior, gave the fuse. I'm not an electrician, so I'm sorry for the bad terminology. I found it so, the ammeter works only if on one side there is a plus to it, and to the other side there is a minus, so on a straight line its readings should be equal to 0. And I have on a straight line from d1 to bt+ the ammeter readings were 100. By logical reasoning, I came to the conclusion that the problem is in fuse, removed it and all the strange behavior disappeared.

I just got a red GBA SP from a retro gaming store. It powers on and functions fine, only played it for a total of about 6 hours. However sometimes the power LED will flicker between red and green, occasionally staying red for a few seconds and switching back. It hasn't frozen or turned off randomly on me. But the flickering is bothering, because I believe it's at full charge. Would following this video fix the issue? I've never soldered anything in my life and don't even know where to get a kit for it or how to use it. 🙃

I've been working on it for 3 days and I can't make it work, if you have any hint or idea of what I should do I would greatly appreciate it my friend.

  • @makho

If the light flickers, it's clearly getting power so it can't be the fuse. Are you sure it's not the power switch? If you're sure it's not the switch, this issue usually is a symptom of a short. Check for water damage, stray solder balls, cut traces, etc.

@@rafaliyo86 Makes sense that the fuses are fine if it charges fine. It won't power up because there is a short somewhere and it looked like there is something fucky with your link port. The plastic bit appears broken or missing and the bottom left pin (pin 1, VCC) looks shorted to one of the data lines. That can't be good. If that's not it, you can probably narrow down the short by checking all the caps near the power regulator (U4 IIRC) and CPU for which one is shorted to ground. I don't have a schematic for AGS consoles though so I can only give educated guesses on what specific components might be connected to those caps. If you are unaware, to test the caps, place one probe on a system ground and check both sides of the cap. One side should be ground and the other side should not be. If both sides are ground, either the cap itself has gone bad (unlikely but possible) or the component the cap is connected to has gone bad or developed a short (physical damage perhaps). An easy test is to desolder the suspect cap and run the test again on the cap pads. If both pads are still shorted, the problem is still present and you'll have to try and trace the circuit.
