How I Fell in Love With Film Photography And What Happened Next - Talk at Webster University Geneva

Webster Geneva is the place where I discovered film photography back in 2010, so taking part in Meet The Artist lecture series felt incredibly special.
I’m talking about how my love for film started, how I doubted whether it was a good idea, how I struggled with darkroom work and finding subjects for my photography, while sharing some stories behind my images.
I’m also discussing the place of analog photography in the digital world, how cameras (35mm, twin lens, large format) affect your approach to image making, the tremendous importance of darkroom work, but also the importance of efficient communication with an audience.
Thank you Julianna Sandholm-Bark and Webster University Geneva for inviting me to take part in this event.
And the most special thank you to Francesco Arese Visconti (aresevisconti.com/), my first photography professor, now head of the Media Department, for pushing me to be better and involving me in his analog work so much that I believed I could do it too.

This is how passion inspires. Having followed your work for the past couple of years, it has inspired me to return to Film, in all of its formats, 135, 120 and even 4"X 5", and I am also in the process of setting up a simple darkroom, to develop and print my own work. You are among a small group of artists that have reintroduced to the public, some of the magic and mystery that surrounds analog photography, and I hope you continue to to promote your positive views of photography, to a new generation of photographers, who will continue to use film. Well done.

It was wonderful hearing your journey and I fully understand your philosophies around photography and art as a whole. I do disagree with one thing though, any fool can see you have worked incredibly hard, but you also have heck of a lot of talent. The image you showed your thought processes for in one of your earlier videos, the one with the bag, is stunning as are all your images. The real magic of analogue photography is definitely in the darkroom for me. Of course film has 'a look', but so many cameras these days can emulate that look, but Lightroom will never give you what a darkroom does. I’m useless in the darkroom but I love playing in there and learning all the time. However, my darkroom is only geared for 35mm B&W, but it’s still an amazing journey. If you are learning, and getting the finished product you are happy with, is the paper wasted? In the video I mentioned before you made several different versions until you got the one you wanted. I don’t think that is a waste. I do make all my landscapes on 120 film at 645, but due to my disabilities and difficulties most larger medium format or any large format would be too much for me to handle. I regret this fact but don't resent it, I'm lucky enough to have a darkroom which many don’t have. That to me is far more important as I’m too much a control freak to hand my images over to anyone else to develop or print. To me the digital equivalent is handing over your RAW files over to a stranger to edit who has no idea what your thought processes are. Please don't stop crying over your frustrations over your images, it's possibly part of that passion drives you so much. Thank you for this video and all your videos, I always learn so much and inspired even more. You and Tim Layton are both amazing LF photographers both from the technical aspect and talent wise.

I came across this after watching a couple of your darkroom tutorials. It's been so incredible to hear you talk about your "origin story" and I can only echo the feedback you've already received and say thank you for sharing this. It's so heartwarming to see the resurgence of film photography, especially among people who really know what they're doing, are passionate about it - and can teach it.

I enjoy listening to you speak about printing, I feel the same passion working to get a print just right, looking it at on the wall for a few days, and then going back and "improving" it again :)
