How I Ended Up A KTM Owner (390 Adventure)

Ойын-сауық

KTM 390 Adventure | I began my motorcycle journey on a Honda and had continued to by Honda's and Kawasaki bikes. In this video I explain how I went from owning two of the most reliable brands to owning a European designed, Indian manufactured Adventure bike. - Frank

I took the same path, KLR TO 390. I had the KLR a total of 8 months. It was too heavy, and in my case the suspension was a squishy mess. There was a wobble at 75mph and the speed was sad, final straw, I bought riding boots, but couldn’t shift in them or adjust to work. (Size16). After searching and running into Marr, it hit my list. I took my boots to a KTM dealer for a test ride and fell in love. They were able to adjust it to my boots easily. In my case, they had 8 2022 still in the crate.

So, if you were big enough to ride an Africa Twin, how do you fare on the 390? Are you missing anything? Power? Wind protection? I have an aprilia Tuareg for long tours with some off road and the KTM 390 ADV which I use up in the Javanese mountains near my home. This is seriously tough off road and the KTM is the perfect bike for it, so light I can pull it around in rocky rivers and climb up the side of volcano’s. This bike with a little bit of skill will go places no other bike will go.

Beautiful Gen1 KLR650 Frank, anyone with a Crescent wrench and a matchbook cover can set the valves on a KLR just like the factory KLR650 racing teams do. I was watching ADV Matt and his KTM390 before I heard of that charming and witty Frank guy. Matt always gets back to you and he and I have covered some of the same Western places, like the Titus canyon that you showed. I never met Matt but seems like a great guy. Rather than adjusting the valves on the old KTM390, I'm thinking a brand new KTM390 would be a better option and transfer all your cool parts over to the new bike. Great story on your bike progression, very entertaining.

Can relate. I have a brand new KLR S model. And with my crash bars panniers boxes etc. Well I think its approaching a Mazda Miata. Luckily as an old geezer of 55 I still have most of the strength of my youth. And I was a power lifter all through school etc. BUT the last hard technical ride and dropping it numerous times over a day...well the strength is still there....but the long term endurance isnt and the next day my body was giving me a wake up call with all the aches and pains. So I am in the market for a second bike. Love the KLR and it has its place for me and I will likely ride it was more. But a good smaller bike is a priority for me right now for those rides that are a bit harder and more technical. But my issue is Im a svelt trim 274lbs give or take 5. And I look like a bear on a tricycle on smaller bikes. So...its a process of trying every thing out there.

Heavy sarcasm alert advised (although, if you can't detect it you best tune your detector settings!). Entertaining and appreciate your trajectory of bikes. Weight is the number one limiter of any off-road riding and everyone dreads picking up 500+ pounds more than once a day. Talk about maintenance, my 2003 KTM 640 Adventure oil changes are a 30-45 minute ordeal but the bike is very capable and sits at 350 pounds dry (yes, add 7.5 gallons of fuel but every bike I know needs gas to travel anywhere), great suspension and brakes. Am looking at the Nelson Rigg panniers you reviewed, too. My Senior Moments fellow from Ashland, OR switched from T7 to 390 Adventure and appears happy with the choice. Oh, and Matt: Check his valves!

Do it yourself, 😊not a videographer so you’ll have to read about it. Shop manual is available online, buy it. Remove tank, remove radiator, remove spark plug, remove valve cover, Put engine on top dead center, slide appropriate feeler gauge under cam follower. Most likely unless you ride a lot next to red line you won’t have to go any farther. I did mine at 9500 and again at 22,000 with no change, within spec. I’m just another old man riding and sold my DL1000 K5 and bought the 390 in June of 2020 paying MSRP plus the advertised 500 shipping by a non screwing dealer 5 hours away.

Frank, I really liked the KTM's engine but the off road ability and the amount of plastic that rattles and shakes compared to the Himalayan is unbelievable, the Enfield I found had much nicer suspension off road, was easier to maneuver and had gobs of torque at low rpm and really could just be lugged slowly off road in the toughest of situations. The Ktm was a better bike on road for highway cruising above 100 kmh, but at speeds 80 kmh and lower i enjoyed the enfield a lot better. The ktm motor is way more powerful but the enfield gearing seems much better. I installed a header and pipe full exhaust on my enfield and put the performance intake on it as well as a fuel controller, has a lot more power now in the mid range and low end

I almost bought this bike. I have 701, so I know 690 Enduro’s shortcomings. 390 is still a bit single but a lot smoother than 690. (still, I prefer twins for longer distances.) The last thing is it’s not Tubeless wheels. I personally do not deal with tune anymore. So, I ended up with 790. But yeah, it’s heavy. I’m still considering 390. Have you had any trouble with the Orange case? My buddy carries a Drone and Camera with a similar case - until around 8k miles, it was okay, then he had a gimbal problem. We assume the damage is from vibration. After that, he carries it either in his backpack or at least not directly on a rack.

I've been looking at adventure bikes, The cheaper ones, Just wouldn't trust, Who needs trouble 40 miles from nowhere, I don't think the more CC's work because of added weight , I droped my super glide putting it away and had to call for help. This bike seems much better all around and comes from a more than reputable company, If more companies made the power without the bulkyness that might work, But for now this looks the best candidate. Thaks for a good review.

Im torn between the 2024 klx300 or the 390adv. Klx is $7300 otd. Avd390 is $7500 otd. One is basically a dirt bike. The other, basically a road bike ,modified Duke . Guess it comes down to readiness and amenities. Thats where the ktm has it , IMO. And im a short dude so thats also a consideration.

Traded in my KTM 390 SW for a Honda Transalp XL750 . Couldnt be happier . Believe it or not but the Honda is easier to foot 👣 and push around than the 390 was . Its also more flickable and feels sporty just like the ktm but with way more power and torque. After my test ride the ktm felt like a cheap toy in comparison to the Honda. Hello MCADV, I believe you about footing the bikes. The frame is a BAD design on the 390. There is no reason it should have been designed with a seat height that high with only 8" of ground clearance. My Honda CRF250L has 2.5" more clearance, and the seat is almost 1" lower! - Frank

@@MotoCampAdv Thanks so much for the absolutely positive vibes. I know it! I will sell it even if it means loosing more money on it (incl accessories, etc) I was also thinking between the Transalp, KTM790, Vstrom800, Tuareg660, and even Tracer 7, but have eliminated all the rest. The Vstrom was it's closest rival, but since the nearest service is 2 hours away, and since I won't be needing its heavy 20lt tank, I decided against it. Cant wait for my Transalp. I'm thinking of the white. Sad that the U.S. only gets the black and they get it 5hp less than the rest of Europe.
