How I divorced Islamic State - BBC News

The British ex-wife of an American leader in the so called Islamic State describes her journey out of extremism.
Tania Georgelas met her husband John, an American convert to Islam, online and they connected over their Islamist views.
After John moved Tania and their children to Syria, she decided to escape. Now she wants to dedicate her life to countering extremism and rehabilitating ex-jihadists.

Aye aye @Captain weasel1776 . I kinda understand what you mean. But when I think about the fact of a lot of other people like her, don't you think accepting them back and getting information about the evil and how to combat them would be a really helpful ain't it(like how it was in the 'catch me if you can' movie)? And if that is helpful don't you want to get the people into the right set of mind back and then give a hope for other people who are in such situations so that this extremism can be combatted and fought holistically. I understand we need to fight with bombs and guns, but don't we want to defeat this with a more deeper understanding and rigour.. especially from those people who have been there, done that sorts?

I can’t help but feel little to no compassion for this woman. She didn’t spend a year as a radical and then realize that she had made a terrible mistake. Instead, she spent ten years and brought four children into this way of life. When she said that she had not ‘directly caused any violence’, I knew that she didn’t really understand the immense impact of her actions. I was floored by that comment. Two adult people decided to move to Islamic State territory for the same reasons: to contribute to the caliphate, using violence when necessary. Why would it be just to put one of the adults in a foreign jail, and welcome the other adult back home? I thought that women want to be held to the same standards as we hold men. The fact that the woman did not *use* violence herself (if we must believe her) does not diminish that fact that she *enabled* the violent wrongdoings of the Islamic State, and of her husband.

Being a pedophile is not illegal, as it's merely a sexual attraction to children. If you act upon these urges, it's illegal. If you make plans to execute an act upon these urges, then it can also be illegal in some cases. Thoughts, views and opinions are not illegal in the free world. @ddraguti .... firstly the United States create more damage than any terrorist group ever could. I think killing half a million children in Iraq makes them most peoples enemy. But regarding the girl - you should know by now that people are capable of doing very bad things, sadly it's part of being human, we all are capable of being led. But anyway the girl has got herself together, why cant you at least be glad she's changed for the better. She's no longer a enemy, and wants to lead a peaceful life.

Till very recent, I used to believe that "religion does not teach enmity between eachother" but after reading the Qur'an my thoughts turned on my head. The reason for this is because of these surah verses of the Qur'an. you also read and tell everyone from where this mindset comes from: 🔹Qu'ran 2:191 "And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers." 🔹Qu'ran 2:193 "Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors." 🔹Qu'ran 2:254 "O you who have believed, spend from that which We have provided for you before there comes a Day in which there is no exchange and no friendship and no intercession. And the disbelievers - they are the wrongdoers." 🔹Qu'ran 3:28 "Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah, except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination." 🔹Qu'ran 3:151 "We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allah of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers." 🔹Qu'ran 4:56 "Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise." 🔹Qu'ran 4:89 "They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper." 🔹Qu'ran 4:144 'O you who have believed, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah against yourselves a clear case?" 🔹Qu'ran 8:12 "[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip." 🔹Qu'ran 8:39 "And fight (Qa'tal) them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do." 🔹Qu'ran 8:59 "And let not those who disbelieve think they will escape. Indeed, they will not cause failure [to Allah]." 🔹Qu'ran 8:60 "And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged" 🔹Qu'ran 8:65 "O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand." 🔹Qu'ran 9:2 "You ˹polytheists˺ may travel freely through the land for four months, but know that you will have no escape from Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers." 🔹Qu'ran 9:5 "And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." 🔹Qu'ran 9:17 "It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally." 🔹Qu'ran 9:19 "Do you ˹pagans˺ consider providing the pilgrims with water and maintaining the Sacred Mosque as equal to believing in Allah and the Last Day and struggling in the cause of Allah? They are not equal in Allah’s sight. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." 🔹Qu'ran 9:23 "O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers." 🔹Qu'ran 9:28 "O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram after this, their [final] year. And if you fear privation, Allah will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Wise." 🔹Qu'ran 9:29 "Fight (Qa'tal) those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [Qa'tal] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled." 🔹Qu'ran 9:73 "O Prophet, carry out Jihād against the disbelievers and hypocrites, and be strict with them. And their abode is Jahannam (Hell), and it is an evil terminus." 🔹Qu'ran 9:123 "O you who believe, fight (Qa'tal) those disbelievers who are near you, and let them find severity in you. Know well that Allah is with the God-fearing. 🔹Qu'ran 22:19 "These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water" 🔹Qu'ran 30:45 "That He may reward those who have believed and done righteous deeds out of His bounty. Indeed, He does not like the disbelievers." 🔹Qu'ran 33:26 "And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party you killed, and you took captive a party." 🔹Qu'ran 47:4 "So when you meet those who disbelieve, strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allah - never will He waste their deeds." 🔹Qu'ran 98:6 "Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures."

She was Salafist in Egypt before Syria, and under control of her husband. And she voluntarily left not only ISIS, but in fact has left Islam. Which by the way is a death sentence for her. And did so before the defeat of IS. She is the best that could happen out of that horror. Unlike the "Jihadi brides" she was married and had children before she got there, and was never passed around by the Jihadists fighters, in their pleasure marriages. Which, by the way Hezbullah was doing with Arab Palestinian girls in Lebanon. If this episode doesn't show dimwit "western" Muslim Girls why to stay out of the clutches of fundamentalist, Islamist males, nothing will.

There's no such thing as an expert in lying. To try to tell whether somebody is lying or not by examining their body language is pop-psych and not real science. I majored in psychology, I hate to see people claim they can tell whether somebody is lying just by looking at them. If it were that easy, most court cases would be very easy to solve, juries and judges would no longer exist.

you really should do some more research on the topic, with respect, body language is an indicator of many things and there is much literature on it. The reason why it is not used in the courts is that it can be misleading depending on a number of factors. However a trained expert could have an opinion on her, But to be fair she does seem like she is bullshitting and if she was a man she would be in jail right now!!!.

Shamima comes from a religious family background, this woman doesn't (she even said her family was non-practising). This woman was pressured into Islam, which Shamima wasn't. This woman only stayed in ISIS for three weeks, not the four years Shamima was there. Their situations are completely different. Media are paying her for information we simply do not need to know.
