How I digitize and rip VHS and DVD for documentaries on a Mac

Ғылым және технология

EDIT: I might be wrong about the VHS player's HDMI output. It might actually upconvert the analog signal to HD.

The Video DVR USB2 video grabber cannot handle S-Video (looks like CVBS) and only has mono audio. OSB Studio cannot handle interlaced video. My opinion

Do you not find that introducing a Time base Corrector - TBC when wanting to get the best quality

Thanks for this. So you don’t need a timebase corrector if you use the clearclick? Does the clearclick have TBC built in?

Not sure, because I haven't tested different tapes and VHS players, but with the tapes I tested, I did not need TBC.

I had a Climaxdigital V800 and it won't work now on my new iMac M1 Monterey since Apple dropped 32 bit. I then ordered a Climaxdigital V800 v3 that I was told would work, but it doesn't. I have a Thunderbolt to Firewire but don't know if it's the correct one. I also have a very old firewire. If one of them are usable would I still have to buy an upscaler? I also have a Neoteck Start to HDMI would that work?

What is your source device? VHS player? HDV camcorder? DV camcorder? Hi8mm tape deck? I don't recommend consumer upscalers, despite my demonstration of one in this video. I'd use professional upscalers, but they are pricey even now. I would upscale after you digitize the video source using software.

@@VideoGizmology all of the above devices. Over the years I have many tapes from all of them. I already used the Climaxdigital V800 + their software for VHS transfer, not good quality when using the Climaxdigital V800, but that wouldn't work on my new computer. If I use the more expensive one, and upload to FCPro would I need a new firewire? I already have a Thunderbolt to firewire and an iEEE 1394.

You could get a new firewire cable, but that's mostly MiniDV and HDV cameras, right? VHS, Hi8mm, and other lower formats use analog or HDMI outputs. Even HDV uses HDMI. When capturing from firewire or HDMI, you just need a firewire to thunderbolt adapters and an Elgato Cam Link 4K to capture from HDMI, then you need the right software, like Premiere Pro, to capture the footage to your computer. OBS could also be used for capture. I'm not as familiar with FCPX. If you want to up-scale from analog and want the best quality, you should look into more professional brands that offer digitizing and up converting hardware like Roland, AJA, and Blackmagic Design. I am not familiar with the more professional equipment, but something like a Roland VC-1-SC Up/Down/Cross Scan Converter, might be what you're looking for, although you still need an analog to digital converter like an Elgato Cam Link 4K and a video editing software that will capture that up-rez footage. If I were doing what you do, I'd just buy a ClearClick HD Video Capture device. It's not the best quality, but it's affordable, adaptable to multiple formats, and is the easiest to use. ClearClick makes several versions of their capture device products, so choose the ones that match the specs you need.

@@VideoGizmology I use FCPX. The Climaxdigital capture device is the same as Elgato, but won't work on iMac M1 with Monterey. That's the problem I have. And, I'm no expert when it comes to these devices. I follow KZread videos to see how to work them etc.

The Elgato capture device I was referring to is not the same as the ClimaxDigital product. The Elgato Cam Link 4K is HDMI to USB 3.0 and should work on all your cameras that have an HDMI output, not your analog older format cameras, but HDV cameras, which you said you have. Unfortunately, there isn't one cheap solution to capture all these formats, you'll have to buy a few different products depending on your source. To capture analog from VHS or Hi8mm, consider the ClearClick device or use OBS, Screenflow, or Quicktime player instead of FCPX. To capture any source via firewire, you'll have to test different cables. Not all firewire cables are created equal unfortunately. Then test other software besides FCPX, like Davinci Resolve, OBS, or Quicktime player, which are all free software.

oh my goodness, I didn't realize the TBC I have is out of stock everywhere and selling for thousands on eBay second hand. I've been digitizing analog video for many years, so I probably got this TBC maybe 9 years ago. This sucks that this TBC is being priced so high.
