How I Cut Propane Tanks (safely)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I guess a lot of you have seen the KZread video where some poor unfortunate soul gets blown up while cutting a tank at work. I'm not sure if that particular video is real or just clever special effects but the danger of cutting into a tank is very real and is often deadly.
On the other hand you can make some very cool stuff out of old tanks of all sorts and they can be cut safely if you take a few simple and logical precautions.
I won't say I am an expert at this but I have cut into a few tanks over the years and I believe my method to be 100% safe or I wouldn't be doing it. Of course you have to be your own judge of safety, what I do in the video works for me, you need to decide if if is safe for you.
Final warning, I use air tools, don't attempt this will electric tools.

I discovered a seller at Melbourne and he sells Chinese stuff like cutting, grinding, flap discs and I ended up getting some and the quality has blown me away all the abrasives I have bought work better than the name brand stuff and I mean a lot better about as good as PFERD stuff. I got a roll of 150mm flap discs with 50 discs in it for a crazy price.

Excellent. I've had the same experience buying abrasive disks off EBay. Check out my comparison tests on some 100mm cutoff disks if you are interested. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWR3qMN_ZtzTdMo.html

Dude... Pure propane and butane have NO smell and it is because of that fact that the gas suppliers add an odorant or stink (Ethyl Mercaptan) so that you can easily detect a leak. There is a small valve on the side of most LPG tank taps that you open to purge the new tank of its transport gas (nitrogen) before filling for the first time. This valve can be used to release the last of the gas from the cylinder before removing the valve. Once a cylinder has been completely filled with water, there is NO inflammable gas left in it even though you can still smell the odorant. The first time that you light a fire in your stove, that stink will be burned out too.

Close. Opening the bleed valve will not release all of the gas from the tank. It releases all of the gas under pressure. Once that is done the gas in the tank is at the same pressure as the surrounding air. In other words there's nothing to push that gas out which is why, as you rightly say, you fill the tank with water which pushes the remaining gas out.

Tank should be purged with CO2 or dry ice (same thing) to displace oxygen. Then it can be welded on or cut open safely.

That would work too but I was always taught that once the water goes through it (completely filled) there is nothing left to burn.

I hate those blades also... sound good on the package but I prefer a regular cutting disc.

I want to cut my tank with my everlast plasma cutter. Any suggestions?

  • @Designed2Build

I thought about using a plasma cutter. I figured that the tank had been empty for several years, the valve had been out for a day and it had been filled with water. I thought if I emptied the water out it should be safe to cut with a plasma. I think it would have been okay but in the finish, I decided it was safer to do it the way I was shown years ago. If you do decide to try it make sure you remove the valve, fill it with water and empty it, let it dry. Good luck.

Read Peter Dorn's comment. After you read his comment...….. find a safer method of cutting your tank than trying your best to turn it into a bomb. I don't know if you've ever had a late firing on your barbecue and experienced the power of a little propane. I myself just about blew the lid right off my barbecue. Ever since I have gained a great respect for it's potential power. Be safe.

If you applied the same technique to a fuel tank petrol as what as shown in the videos and comments you could be in serious problem when welding a fuel tank they are the steam clean for some length of time or run air into the tank while it is being welded I was always taught that filling Tanks with water is not a safe way and can actually make it worse, you must make the gas in the tank INERT Regards safety Sam

I was shown this way by a fellow who had been doing it for years but if you have been shown differently then you should definitely stick with what you are comfortable with.

Yeah if it was a petrol tank, but it's not. it's a propane tank so this method is completely safe there is no way it could go wrong and anything else would be Overkill

Why on earth would you be cutting the valve guard and tank handle off with the valve open. If something did go a little wrong you are suppling your mistake with fuel. Close the valve and make sure you don't cut into the actual tank. Appreciate the video but play safe. Remember you have crazy teenagers and people who think they are handy watching and learning from you. - Also..... that is a very old style tank and people will just assume this to apply to anything that remotely resembles a propane tank. Simply opening the valve on a newer style tank will not drain the gas from it.

I think I did say that the valve had been open for years (like 10) but I do take the point about crazy people watching. I will try to be more explicit.
