I really like seeing these kinds of videos, as they always get me to rethink a little bit about my own mapping style, and maybe reconsidering some of my own methods for making better maps. I think there is still tons to explore about what it even means for gameplay to feel good. Who knows, maybe I should make a video in this style
HELL yeah i loooove ricky06 and ufo nest this was a very interesting video that I think brings up some great points about room concepts etc etc every single time boom town was on screen i cereal2d irl

boom town is a banger!
what's classified as "artificial" difficulty in a lot of people's eyes is really just more mechanical difficulty than conceptual difficulty unless the conceptual difficulty goes on that dichotomy it becomes a gimmick that doesn't feel like celeste at which point it doesn't feel fair

I have heard the game most commonly when discussing Dark Souls. There it is basically synonymous with „unfair“. If you walk down a path, can‘t see somewhere, and then get oneshot from that direction a lot of people would call that artificial difficulty. Of course there can be hints for this to make it feel fair. An equivalent in Celeste or more generally 2D platformers might be Kaizo blocks or falling blocks that don‘t have indicators. I think there is a massive difference though, because Dark Souls or more generally Action Adventure games offer something that could be beaten immediately, while platformers, especially modded, are played with the understanding that you have to practice the room step by step and will die along the way. I have heard massively tanky bosses (or just weird numbers) also called artificially difficult. If you can do what the boss asks you to do it with 95% accuracy, but it has to be done so often you still have a low chance of succeeding, then that can fall under it. I think that‘s more of a Golden thing though - at some points maps get too long to be reasonably goldenable, even without the gameplay itself being ridiculous. Desert Seeker from 5b funnier version would fall under it, besides that - subpixel stuff without consistent setups? I‘d combined both of those as „requiring multiple attempts by default“. Wether it is dying once in a „cheap“ way or being statistically unlikely to succeed and playing often enough until you get lucky. Mechanical/Conceptual I think is relevant in so far that getting what you don‘t expect feels unfair - which imo makes it weird to complain about either one in modded Celeste? Puzzle games requiring frameperfect inputs or bullet hells requiring you to solve a murder mystery would both be weird. I think forced replaying fits into that as well: it is accepted in a lot of games, but not specifically those games. And being accepted or expected is what makes the big difference.
YOOOOO is that LAPUTA!? i just rewatched Castle in the Sky this is AWESOME!
That's an insanely beautiful map. I wish I knew how to pixel art.
Kingdom to heaven paid my debt, cured all my sickness, did my laundry, fixed my college grades, got me a wife made me dinner tucked me in bed and kissed me goodnight (Conqueror's peak top 3 maps I've ever played btw)
Awesome video, parrot brought me here
15:48 maybe you could look at it as less of a problematic obsession and more of a solution to another problem you would otherwise have, such as finding out what to do in your free time, or finding inspiration and confidence. Also great video btw, it was nice hearing your thoughts about the way you make gameplay in Celeste
I was literally searching for clockwork and was playing it when i clicked on the video XD EDIT: OMG I FINISHED CLOCKWORK FC!!!!! I DIDN'T EXPECT TO FINISH IT THIS FAST!!!!
Always a fan of celeste modding essays! Can't wait till you get another of those motivation bouts
Very good video! I rarely see videos on not only what good level design is but why it's good. Also, very well edited.
New ricky video!!! Hell yeah
this is just like “okinano: the bubble” (good video ricky)
ok "Modded Celeste" scraggly
Finally a video like this! I have had a gm mapping video script for like 8 months but never decided to make it. Glad to see something similar finally coming to fruition
The only thing I suck at modding is making fun and creative gameplay. This video actually helps with this!
This may be made for celeste mapping, but its a really good video for some aspects of level design in video game development
No way a new ricky06 KZread upload excited to watch this
Super interesting video, absolutely loving this series!!! Honestly I’m half using it to get all the interesting thoughts and half to learn about cool maps that I’ve missed, so thanks for that!
Banger video, I’ve recently seen a few videos on more niche game design, and it’s really nice. Definitely don’t sell yourself short, at least in script content and presentation you have the "I like your funny words magic man" video essay style down.
Really happy to see this kind of content on yt. You've got a lot of interesting thoughts to share, I hope they keep on coming.
This video is so awesome and enlightening
I’ve never heard of you before but I love your video’s atmosphere!! It feels so nice and warm, definitely earned another subscriber!
"Modded celeste tends not to focus on structured levels, like resort" Me: "Oh thank goodness, I hate resort"
"I don't think there's a right way to map/game design" I agree..... although I desperately wish there was, because this shit is way too complicated and abstract for my tiny brain to wap itself around it. I wish there was a concrete, fool-proof, step by step process you could just follow for good game design...
i like mapping im making some awesome things that'll be released in like idk a long time lol
What map is being shown at 5:06?
