Hi, thank you so much for posting your story. I'm 15 years old and I tore my acl and meniscus in November and got surgery 3 days ago. Before the surgery I watched a lot of videos to see what the process looks like, but very few talked about the impact on your mental health. Finding out that I tore my acl is pretty much every athlete's nightmare. It happened during my most important game of the season and I felt like I let down the whole team. I've been playing volleyball and doing sports in general my whole life. I'm not sure if I would've had/can have a career in sports, if I'm willing to risk it all. Now I've become a burden for my family and friends and it's tough. Mentally I'm not in a great place right now, but I'm working hard, pushing through the pain and I want to keep getting stronger. It takes time and patience to heal and i am ready to make that commitment. Thank you for reminding me to keep my head up and push forward. Thank you so much for reminding us that it gets better ❤.

I can completely empathize with how you feel right now! And I think it's important to give yourself time to feel a little down in the dumps about it for a few days - it's a hard hard thing when it feels like something so important to you gets taken away from you suddenly. It can feel like part of who you are, part of your identity, gets taken away. But I want to assure you that this process can give you a new identity - as an overcomer and as a warrior. And that even this setback can be an even bigger comeback. Once I wrapped my head around the possibility that I could come back even stronger, faster and better if I dedicated myself to the process - I felt really grateful to be going through it. You will become so much more mentally strong than some of your teammates because of this obstacle you get an opportunity now to overcome. It does get better! I promise :) Feel free to connect with me on instagram @victoria_dorsano and shoot me a message if you need any support! I'm here for you!

Lifelong athlete, age 26. Injured my knee the week of Christmas 2022. Finally got it looked at after several months with little improvement (my body has never let me down like this before and it has been infuriating). Got an MRI and confirmed a partial ACL tear. Now staring down the barrel of surgery at this lengthy recovery and mentally preparing myself. I miss running so much it hurts, but this seems to be the only way forward. For anyone who has done this without a family nearby, how did you manage the logistics of the first few weeks post-op?

I tore my ACL and meniscus skiing. That morning I told myself I shouldn’t go. Being the athlete I am I went anyways. Worst decision. I am definitely trusting my gut next time because emotionally I’m going through with this injury. Not working out and playing VB was literally my life line.

Tears kept rolling down my face as I watched this. Thanks so much for sharing. I have an MCL tear (grade 3 ) and have torn my ACL as well after a skiing accident on Christmas Day. I'm a 41-year-old mum. Want so much to play with my girl and be active with her. I've been told I have a year-plus recovery. Getting my head in the game. ACL reconstructive Surgery in 3-4 weeks. To see you jumping and running again made my heart sing. I've decided to use this time to train as a Clinical Nutritionist (something I have wanted to do for the last 10 + years). I have decided to turn this into a positive. Again, thank you

A mere 2hrs after arriving in Mexico, I tore my ACL, partially tore my PCL, strained my MCL, tore my medial meniscus and had a compression fracture in my tibia...dancing. Waited 314 days for surgery...which was postponed as I tested positive for Ecoli, Norovirus and Covid 5 days before surgery. IV for 3 days, Christmas alone and another 33 day wait. Surgery in 4 days. Excited and apprehensive. I hike dogs for a living and live alone. No family. No financial support as self-employed. It's going to be a long road to recovery...but keep reminding myself this is temporary. Thank you for sharing your story. I'll join some online support groups so that I feel less alone in this journey.

It took my doctors 3 years to figure out my Acl & meniscus were torn. They just assumed my knee cap just kept dislocating and that nothing happened to my Acl. They did x-rays and other tests and said my ACL was fine but my knee just kept popping out and feeling unstable. 3 years after complaining they finally ordered and MRI and figured out what was happening. My surgery for my ACL and stitching up my meniscus is this Thursday. Thank you so much for sharing your story ❤

Exactly the same happened to me. I apparently tore mine 5 years ago. My doctor told me it was nothing to worry about and it was just a 'weak' spot for me lol, but I had enough and ordered an MRI as well. I had surgery last Tuesday and luckily no irreversible damage was done during these 5 years. I definitely feel you and get your frustration. How are you holding up now?

Our stories are so similar but I am just a lot older (mid 40’s). I have always been extremely athletic my whole life and played Level 1 sports even throughout college and beyond. I have had injuries but NOTHING like this! When my ACL tore and then when I had complications (infection in the knee & knee cap broke) shortly after surgery, my mental health tanked. I am still recovering. 6 1/2 weeks post op and thankfully I feel like I am finally making progress. I can’t thank you enough for making this video. I could not imagine sitting down and putting a video together much less filming my PT grueling appointments due to the pain and… let’s face it, I’m still going through it. I may definitely going to have to see about searching for these support groups. I didn’t even know they existed. This video has been a blessing! FYI - Incrediwear support wear has been god send! It works! I wear the leg sleeve 24/7 and I also have their knee brace. Love them ❤ I also highly recommend them for anyone. Thanks again for sharing your experience with the rest of us.

Felt much better after hearing you story, you really overcame all the obstacles throughout your journey.I am 5 weeks post acl surgery.I have been active whole my life and am really great at soccer,I also used to lift heavy ass weights in the gym but now I am doing bare minimum weights. The hardest part of this journey is the mental pain from which one has to go through. The last two months have been really pathetic for me and I have really become isolated and lonely.I am doing pretty good at recovering but the mental pain is just too much to handle. From doing a 375lbs squat to be not able to lift your own bodyweight, looks like a long way to go!

Hello and thanks for your video. It’s 4am in the morning for me I’m literally a week away from my ACL surgery and I’m very anxious. I had a rough day with pain in my leg hence woken at 4am reaching for painkillers . I’m also anxious and nervous about the recovery process. I’ve been off work already trying to prepare for operation and strength training. I’m not an athlete like you however trying to work on my physical fitness prior I’m proud of what I’ve done so far. I’ve literally moved intestate to be back with family a week ago due to knowing I need my support and family (I’m 56 and a widow) so I’ve moved in with my daughter instead of living in my own I understand this process is going to be long and emotional and I’m so grateful that I’ve come across your video which I’ll keep to focus on when I’m in my low day’s moving forward. I’m also going to ensure to focus on eating well and protein as I know we have to keep our muscles strong. Thank you for the encouragement and your personal support to us all. I’ll try to fall off to sleep now hoping to rest well and have positive energy for tomorrow and next Tuesday day of surgery. Thank you Tania

Ruptured my ACL 2 weeks ago after volleyball. Will start with physiotherapy next week, still don’t know if I will get surgery. I don’t play professionally, but thinking about how my knees wont be the same as it used to be to be really scares me. Your situation was way worst than mine, but it really inspired me. I hope your recovery is still going great.

Hi! I am so thankful to listen to your story. I tore my ACL fully and had an extensive tear on my Lateral Meniscus. I remember the doctor completely ruling out the ACL tear and being in shock the day I got pulled out of school for a brace fitting. I got tackled from behind in a state cup soccer game. I remember limping off the field and sitting on the bench thinking that this was the worst pain I had ever been in. I am two weeks post operation and I just feel behind. I've missed tryouts, I don't have a team anymore, and it feels like the world has taken away one of the things I love the most. Thank you for the video because a lot of times it feels like only so many people truly understand how much pain we are in mentally and physically.

This is incredibly inspiring. I got my ligament tear (a massive one) on my birthday while dancing at a club (very normal dance). I didn't realize it early on after the rapture and danced for 2 straight hours with a dislocated kneecap and an unhinged ligament thinking it was just a muscle pull, that probably worsen the tear. I had my surgery a couple of week. It wasn't a regular laser ACL surgery, they had to cut my knee open right down the center. The injury was so severe that I lost all control on my calf muscle, resultantly, I can't move my leg at all (practically paralysed). It's the toughest thing I've ever encountered. Not so much of physical pain as it is mental trauma, seeing people enjoying their lives outside and I can barely move. Now, as a part of my rehabilitation, I not only have to get my knee functioning again but also strengthen my ligaments enough to support my calves. I am overweight which makes this process even worse and the risk of re-damage is higher than average. But, as she said, I'm only moving forward every day, with every single extra degree I bend my knee. Good luck to me and everyone facing this injury. It's tough but you'll make it through :)

I've never had a video connect to me more! I tore my acl and meniscus at the end of September and had surgery 5 weeks ago. I am a senior in college and playing basketball. I was excited for this season, not only to prove myself, but also because I missed the end of my junior year with a concussion/whiplash and nerve damage. I finally felt like I got myself back after a season full of injuries the year before and 5 days into season I tear my ACL. Thank you for making this video. I started jiu-jitsu 7 months ago and fell in love with it on day 1. They give you a week to try it out before you decide whether or not you want to join, and I joined 10 minutes into the first class. BJJ has a very steep learning curve. You'll get thrown around and dominated pretty much for the first 10-12 months before you can start being somewhat competitive with it. Just recently I completely tore my ACL. To be 7-8 months in and starting to hit my stride, and then have to take a year off for an acl injury has been devastating. I have my surgery in 6 weeks, and am hoping for a speedy recovery. My spirits are high sometimes, and very low other times. Little things like driving around with my wife, we'd go by my BJJ gym and I'd always say "there's where I train!" Now going by there and not saying that feels empty. Multiple people (including my wife) have told me to quit altogether. "It's not worth it", "You're not trying to be a professional UFC fighter", but they don't understand the point. Someone who has not found their volleyball or jiu-jitsu don't get the mental pain associated with being taken away from that. The hardest part for me is keeping the rest of my life in tact. Eating healthy, lifting weights, practicing cardio, etc all seem empty without BJJ. It's tough.

My daughter is a hs junior, committed to play softball even while recovering from a full ACL tear 🙏, she’s 5 months post op, feeling great to the point we are having to constantly stay on her about her limits until she’s released to do things by her orthopedic. Absolutely!! Yes it can be so hard to resist going back into things full force once you start feeling well! But I’d definitely still have her hold back from 100% play until 9 months. The graft still is undergoing a lot of changes until then to help it become stronger. (Really for the first 2 years post-op it’s changing into ligament tissue). But she can definitely ease into it between now and then! Just keep managing the training load and keeping an eye on it :) does she have a sport brace? If not, the fusion XT from BREGG is great!

This is so powerful! Back in July 2021, I fully dislocated my knee cap and fractured my knee cap while playing volleyball and how it happened was I went up for a spike I heard a loud pop. I had surgery, I thought the worst part of the injury was when it first happened, but I was wrong the worst part was the recovery after surgery! I was in Physical Therapy for almost 6 months. I was cleared to start playing the beginning of this year! Everyday since the injury I have always had pain. To this day it still scares me that the injury will happen again. I just wanted to say thank you because you’re truly inspiring in your story of your knee injury and how to get through a hard knee injury!!

I completely get the fear and the pain. It's so important to give yourself grace and be patient with your body and mind in the process. You got this! It's all about taking baby steps toward small successes.

@@Alessi_Adore hey there! and actually I'm doing much better the second time around. the first surgery i was limping for about 2 years and this time around i can walk up and down stairs very well and even run. i got back into cycling a few months ago. im not sure if my meniscus is prefect bc there is some crackling again but everything is very functional. i did however experience a lot of pain at the end of a work day that left me quite stiff in the knee (difficult to sit and even retract my leg to board my car [left knee] and manual transmission). i theorize that the slight angle in which they angle the grafting has an impact on how it holds up to certain motions. but overall I'm pleased to inform you that i feel completely normal now just less muscle in this leg and a slight loss of range in both flexion & extension. thanks for asking and reading this far :) hope you are doing well too!!

Your story is great to hear. I'm happy you're making a full recovery. I tore my ACL in late August of 2020. Had my surgery in December of 2020. The surgeon used my patella tendon for the repair. I did PT for a year and had some great results. Then had a set back. I then started doing kneesovertoes. Once again had great results. Once I started doing the dense program, I started experiencing a new pain in my upper shin. I saw in another video of yours that you also did the kneesovertoes program. So as you know you aren't supposed to work through any pain. I feel very similar to what you expressed in this video. I have put in countless hours. Made progress just to regress. I completely sympathize with the expression of feeling betrayed by your body. My whole life I've been active and it has been almost two years of attempting to recover. Some days are better than others but overall I am just down about what realistically my future looks like. Did you end up working through pain? Also how did you resolve the issue with your scar tissue? Do you have any advice overall? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this too. It's really tough to deal with those set backs. There have been some times during the KOT program where I've gotten some pain, so I'd regress the movement and spend time focusing on quality of movement. I'd focus on recovery more - like icing - wearing an incrediwear knee sleeve to help with inflammation, using voltaren gel - etc. That has seemed to help get me back on track. I have another video coming out on 11/27 that I think will help you with these questions too!

You are AMAZING! Thank you for sharing. I had my ACL+Meniscus surgery on 2/17/22. I completely agree with you on how some days you feel great, moving forward and some days are tougher and you’re moving backwards. It is very reassuring to hear that slowly but surely it gets better and better. I’m almost 4 weeks post op and I have celebrated small wins such as SLR’s, more exercises, movements, less pain, but now I’m at the stage where progress is slower as it takes longer to reach those next steps. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’ve had a similar experience. I’m 15 years old and had tore my ACL playing soccer. Due to covid I had to stop playing in 2020, finally got back to playing in the summer, then we went on lockdown again in the winter of 2020/ early 2021 and I once again returned to playing in the summer of 2021. I had joined a new team at a more competitive level and was finally starting to fit in when I tore my ACL and it was the absolute worst. I finally got the thing I love the most back and then just like that it was taken from me. Mentally it’s been extremely tough because I’ve been playing for 11 years of my life and having to sit out for so long is terrible as well as having that doubt of whether I’ll be able to achieve the things I’ve been hoping to achieve. Thanks for sharing, Victoria. I’m having my surgery in a few weeks and felt more at ease hearing you talk about your experience. Similar to you, I tore mine (and more, sadly) going back to the sport I love most after “retiring” competitively, so it did feel like betrayal from my happy place. I generally have a very positive attitude when things go south, so the mental struggle with this one surprised me. I’m excited to get to where you are now and be able to look back at this experience as one of growth 🫶🏼

Thanks for posting! I am 53 and ruptured my ACL AND completely tore my Meniscus. I was skiing in CO with my adult sons. With the injury combination I can’t do full weight for at least 6 weeks then another 8 months of recovery. I play hockey, volleyball, ski and scuba dive. It will be a long time before I am back doing all that. I am at week 3.5 right now. Looking forward to the journey. Glad yours is ending well! Stay positive, stay focused!

It’s so interesting to watch other people’s stories. I’m almost two months post op. I’ve torn my ACL 3YEARS ago. Walked from doctor to doctor with pain then I even started to believe there’s really nothing wrong with my leg. So I hiked Norway and other mountains with torn ACL :D Now it’s just hard to exercise and get better extension. I hope it will go better, it’s not the best and it still hurts a lot

Also, doing a lot of research on acl recovery because i got surgery 6 days ago. this is the sixth spring in a row that i’ve really injured myself, and i thought i was going to be fine, because i was so ready to try and try out for my colleges soccer team because i wasn’t able to the year before. and the day after i saw a shooting star i tore it clean while skiing. and lately it’s been like a “why me” “why again” “what did i do to deserve this” battle and i cry every day for the loss of my present. so these videos are really helping

This a truly inspiring story about your ACL Injury and Recovery. Back in September 2009 I went through an ACL Tear while playing soccer was playing defense and managed to block the play but felt and heard the snap and was in pain and even the opponent players along with my teammates called to the sidelines to tend to me. Had to be helped off the field and managed to get into an orthopedic my parents were both familiar with and right off the bat when he was moving my knee he could tell too much unstable in it and MRI proved his point ACL Tear. At first my thought was my playing days are over but when he explained arthroscopic surgery for ACL replacement surgery along with physical therapy for 6 months would bring me back to playing soccer again and with all hard work and strong support from family and friends back in action

Hi! Hearing your story is so motivating and deliberating. I’ve been so scared that I would never get back to how I was before my accident. I was in a car accident about two months ago where I was passenger and had my legs on the dash. I tore my ACL, PCL, and MCL all within a second of the airbags exploding and good thing it happened so fast because I didn’t feel a think until after but was only pressure. I had my second surgery about two weeks ago and I’ve felt so discouraged and worried about feeling like myself again but seeing what you could accomplish have me hope. Now all I’m scared of is getting early degenerative arthritis in my knee, as the doctors are telling me I have a higher risk that most because of my injury, but only time and God will tell.

Hi victoria, thanks for sharing your experience here. This was the same feeling i had when i got injured. I hesitate to be on the ground that day and one of my friends pushed me to play. During that match i got struck on my knee the first thing that run through my mind was "Please god, don't be an ACL Ligament injury". I was in immense pain, and i remember my friends just carried me to the side line and first I thought that it would be okey and not that serious injury but after sometimes i can't even extended or bend my leg to a full motion. And it was a partial ligament tear, still i haven't done the surgery and it's been almost six months now. Either planning for a PRP injection treatment or a surgery 😢. I don't know, I just thought of sharing this here when i heard her experience on ACL injury caz i was also in a same state of mind when i got injured. Take care everyone. Thank you❤
