as of writing this comment, it seems like HDB has updated the links to a lot of the sites i mentioned in this video, so i've updated the links that i included in the description. but take note that the screenshots of the HDB website in the video might be slightly different from the current pages on the HDB website now!

Hi Lisa. I believe the estate of your father may be able to stake claim for a percentage of the flat in equity. Please do see a lawyer quickly if your family wishes to explore legal options against your aunt.

Thank you for being so vulnerable and open and sharing your story. I honestly clicked this just because I was curious, I'm single & turning 25, I had no intentions to buy a HDB but I stayed through the entire video. Your strength, tenacity and your love for your family was so admirable and how you told your story, how you actually explained something that is usually a long and complicated process and made it so easy to follow through, was really impressive too. You're an amazing storyteller and an incredibly strong woman! Just want to say you've done so well, and I don't know you but I'm so so proud of you. I hope the future will be much kinder to you and your family and I'm rooting for you! Can't wait to see more great content!

Also looking forward to your renovations video 💜

I got teary as I got to the end (and yes, I watched the entire 49 minutes of this). You're so brave to have gone through all of this, processed and acknowledged your pain, and still choose to very systematically organise all of this info for others to learn from!! You got this adulting thing in the bag (speaking as someone a few years older and comparatively still fumbling in the dark). It's upwards and onwards for you - genuinely hope life treats you kind

I feel your pain of not having your own house which suppose to be the place where we can get comfortable and be yourself with. My husband moved here from china since he was 10 and had been renting the house until 27. We are also struggling about what we can and can’t purchase in terms of having only 1 Singapore citizen in our household while other holding only Longer term visa which can only purchase resale house which we can’t afford at that time as freshly graduate. And I also feel your joy after finally got a place to called “my home”. After renting the house for almost 18 years. I finally got my PR so me and my husband can finally purchase BTO and we got lucky to get a sale of balance. We are now very happy with our home and we love it so much. Since we know the feeling pf not having ours before makes we are more appreciate of what we have now. I’m so happy that your story and a good ending too and I believe it will getting better from now on. Much love.

I empathize with you. I did the same thing in 2001, at 25 yr old, buying a HDB flat with my grandparents who were upgraders to private property. My family were more than 3 generations of Singaporeans, and I also did not get any HDB grants and not subsidized HDB loan. I paid 4% on HDB loan, for the 10 years. I wrote to MP and the PMO to do something for the single Singaporeans. 20 years later, you went through the same HDB regulations because nothing had changed for single Singaporeans. Your narration is really clear. Good job on moving your family out. You have the makings to be a successful professional.

Hello Lisa. It's tremendous what your family had to endure, especially the injustice of the house ownership system in Singapore. I believe it's edge cases like these that need to be reviewed and taken into account, and in some cases, the rules get amended. Years ago, there was a call to IRAS's call centre asking about the Foreign Maid Levy (FML). It was one of those taxation policies that sought to encourage married women to stay in the workforce. A newly widowed woman had called in to ask about her eligibility - but she wasn't entitled to it. Divorcees and married women were, but the law had overlooked the most needy. I was involved in handling the lady's enquiry, and appealed for a revision in this policy. One year later, it was also extended to widows (it's late but better than never)! Thank you for sharing your story. I wish nothing but the best for you and your family.

We may be strangers, but I'ld just like to say that you're doing a really good job! Just like you, I too, bought over my house at 24 too when my dad passed on two year ago. I still get agitated when I think about it though haha. It's like you want to do it because it makes others happy (and because of circumstance too) but at the same time its frustrating because it isn't exactly what you want. It's more of what others expect you to do just because they think you would. It actually does take a lot of courage to be embarking on this journey, a lot of coaxing and self persuasion. No one would understand how difficult the whole process is unless they are in your shoes. Hearing you mention the things that you've been through, I would just like to give you a pat on your shoulder. Being only 24 at that point of time and having to go through all that you've mentioned, you're really doing such a great job. I really do hope that things would only get better for you from here on. Pretty sure amazing things are out there waiting for a great young lady like you.

Pat yourself on the shoulder young lady … you did well , SO VERY WELL 👍My dad passed away suddenly at the young age of 49yo. He did not make a will ( people in that era are “pantang” about these things. My family of 8 lived in a 3rm flat. I was 24yo then and have 5 younger siblings and mom to take care of. I had to give up many things and aspirations, the road in front of me was simply darkness. So I feel your desperation to succeed and make things work no matter how. Good things does happen to those who helped themselves. I’m in my 60’s now. And I don’t regret any decisions I partake then. I’m a happy Senior 😉 Sending you a bear hug, love and good vibes with abundance of blessings coming your way 🥰

You are wise beyond your years due to your experiences and the cards you were dealt. There's a larger than 10 year age gap between the two of us and still you are an inspiration to myself and many others. You have shown a maturity and wisdom that found in many young adults your age, much less you were new graduate fresh out of university when you purchased the HDB in 2020. I'm glad mostly everything worked out despite the setbacks with the grants, PTO etc. You put me in awe and I wish for only positivity in your life presently and going forward. Thank you for making such a quality and comprehensive video, very much appreciate the details and efforts you've put into making it. Also thank you for giving us a glimpse into your personal life - I feel like it allowed us to know you on a more intimate level than as a random subscriber. In saying that, I am sorry for your loss in 2019 and also the whole terrible ordeal with your aunt and her flat. Giving you a huge virtual hug for overcoming obstacles and for being such a positive role model. Stay strong and all the best Lisa!

Strong people challenges difficult situations head on even if it is unpleasant, and learn that in life most good stuff aren’t pleasant (ie difficult, tiring, road blocks), like losing weight, saving money, learning, etc. but unpleasant is okay, it can be understood and even enjoyed. It was very wise of you to value and protect the emotional wellbeing of yourself and your family, and you were only 24 years old. Fresh out of uni, you did your best with the knowledge you had and studied up on what you lacked. What you did and achieved at the end of it all are commendable. I'm glad that you're going through a deliberate process of healing right now, and I pray that you'll receive the enlightenment you need to feel free once more. Live your life with your head up and be proud, because you're amazing.

I just want to drop by to tell you how much I adore your tenacity & grit for as a young adult. As an only child growing up with my parents in a rental flat, I can totally relate to your experience. I do believe, however, that the perspectives & philosophy that you have gained as a person is much more valuable than anyone who grows up without any struggles in life. Kudos to you Maria, I hope you are well today wherever you are! :)

You are truly a strong willed person.

First of all, you have a good mindset and even greater heart, I wish you all the very best, sincerely, that you will go from strength to strength and be the better person then you’re yesterday. Life is hard and yes, most of the system (since 1960s) should be properly reviewed and updated, MND and it’s subsidiary stat boards does work on the rules etc and ad box cases but perhaps more could have been done in special circumstances and cases. Your explanation on the whole journey gave a decent perspective of your situation and for you to be able to push through all these and come out the better for it shows that you’ve got a strong character. This is the kind of channel and content more should make, instead of some other rather mindless rubbish more “famous” people puts up.

Your TLDR alone was very helpful, thank you for summarizing and getting straight to the point, then letter people decide if they want to know the details. Edit: I have finished watching your video out of curiosity, and I think you have done very well considering the circumstances. When you mentioned your choice was emotional rather than financial, I feel that having a place to call home and be able to return to and work for is way better than enduring a toxic environment, you might be better of financially, but therapy is expensive in Singapore as well, so in reality, perhaps you saved on the other side of your finances rather than just on the house.

Hi Lisa, just want to give you a word of encouragement that you are doing great for yourself from the clear and systematic manner you present your thought process. My father also passed away when i was 14 leaving me to take care of my mum and younger sister. We have no home nor cash, and stayed at my granny's. Like the song "What doesn't kill you made you stronger", i am now in my 50s, married, with two adult kids, a fulfilling career and not in want of any material comfort. If you don't mind, i will like to share your experience with the relevant Ministry.

I chanced upon your reno video when I was browsing through reno videos for ideas. I thought it’s impossible that you are a 24-year-old because you are too eloquent and mature for this age. I was still a lost sheep and didn’t know what I was doing at your age. Even in my late 40s, I am ashamed to say that I am not as mature as you. I always tell others that I have gone through the worst in life and am tired of living but perhaps my life experiences pale in comparison to yours. I am currently living with a toxic family member as I am waiting for my flat. It’s very difficult as she’s always throwing her tantrums and all sorts of accusations and labels at me. She would threaten to throw me out when I retort. Thank you for your generous sharing of what you have been through. There are so many times I wished I could tell someone about what I am going through but yet I know no one around me would understand. You make me feel that I am not so alone on the part of living in a toxic environment. Perhaps I should have looked for a flat that does not require a 3-month extension. I reckon with renovation, I can only move into the flat at the end if this year if I am lucky. I just want to tell you that you are an incredible young lady and will go far in life with your wisdom and discipline.
