How i became an oktavist - Tips for youngsters

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello dear friends. After a lot of requests for bass voice tips, or how I manage to train my voice, I decided to start a mini-series of videos, talking about my experience, my thoughts, and what I think someone has to do to build a healthy bassy voice. This video is especially for younger ages who are eagerly trying to reach contra notes without any proper training, or for someone who wants to develop his bass voice and doesn't know how to start, and by no means does not replace a vocal coach. I can only show you a way, you will decide what to do.
I want to thank you again for your support. Please comment, Like & Subscribe, and if you have questions that I can answer, please feel free to ask.

    Very good video. I was a baritone that “aged” into a basso profundo. I have found that I sing better bass in the evening since I constantly deal with allergies so by then my head is clear and open. Overall I’ve learned that time and allowing your voice to get there naturally gives lower notes and better tone. I’m 54...

    A baritone, bass-baritone and bass voice matures close to 40 years old. My voice started out as a high baritone in my 20's, bass baritone close to 33's and now I'm slowly growing in it. My lower range extended by a full fifth

    This was absolutely amazing to hear the pure double bass instrumental sound coming from the human voice... a Greek voice! Also, this helps not only young teen basses, but somewhat older ones like myself, (28 years old so far) as well, so thanks because I've not ever trained in vocal music at all, not even in church.

    @@N9TheNoob Used to have a decent A1 and a weak G1, now my record was a weak D#1 (on the edge to fry, could argue about that). But in general it went from a weak G1 to a weak E1. G1 & F1 sound much fuller & louder now. My higher range changed a lot aswell. I used to have a C4-D4 on a daily basis, now I sometimes cant go above G#3. C4 is only on a few days and D4 I've only reached 2 times since then. I don't know why that changed so quickly within a month, but it did :D

  • @zntnx

    @zntnx

    Жыл бұрын

    @@thomasoneill4386 Oh well. A lot has happened from then to now. In general: yes, I kept these notes. The weak E1 I was talking about turned into a weak D1. But I wouldn't say that these are notes, I could really use while singing. It's just suuper breathy and really quiet. Maybe for some on-mic backgrouond bass it would be enough. My actual USABLE range however is F1- G3 in the morning and more like G/G#1 - G3 for the rest of the day (Actually up to D4/E4, but anything above G3 just starts to hurt and strain). So my voice got a bit deeper since then and most noticable my tone got darker. When I commented first, I was 18 for 2 months. Now I'm 19 and 3 months away from being 20. BUT: I got set back a LOT. I fell in love with singing so much and did it way too often. When trying to reach lower notes, I also sometimes used a lot of preassure (which I didn't know at the time) which completely ruined my voice. I couldn't sing for 14 months, 4 of which I wasn't even able to speak. If I would've gone with a more healthier way of singing and not 10h+ a day, I might have gotten some better progress. Since I'm still in therapy for my voice and I'm not 100% recovered yet, my range might actually change again pretty soon. But that's what it is right now. So if you're following the tips from this video: Yes, they work and you can really notice fast changes. But don't do it too much. If you're new to singing or discovering your lows, 1-2h a day are 100% enough. After time you can of course increase it, but don't go into it like an absolute freak. The motivation got me and at the end of the day it was probably the worst year of my life. So: be careful, be patient and let nature do it's thing! Hope that helps!

    I am a basso profondo and F2 to about C3 is the part of my range I love, since I have more power than a baritone, but it still has the depth to impress. Sure, I can do parlor tricks on a mic and hit an A0 subharmonic or G negative 1 fried note to drop jaws... it just doesn't make good music, though.

  • @bradycall1889

    @bradycall1889

    @@johndeeregreen4592 Yes. And part of it is because the human voice is not used to going low pitched in the 0th octave or even the negative 1st octave. Another reason why those notes don't sound good is because they are so low pitched that we have difficulty hearing the fundamental frequency and we primarily hear the harmonics, which means that EVEN IF us humans could hit it in chest voice . The pipe organ has those low notes, but they only used when some octave notes are added, which I like to call "supporting notes" because they give support and tone to notes that would otherwise just be heard as a toneless rumble. As an organist myself, I'll occasionally use something like a C0 while playing, but I do not use it in every song because I only use it if I'm "in the mood" to add any sort of "rumble" to my songs.

I wish to become a bass as i get older. Because i think i am a baritone. I was feeling sad because every video and article says its not possible to increase lower range. But you gave me hope. So I'm 20 years old right now, used to sing in assembly for 10 years, now roughly a year ago joined a choir, I feel like improving in power, lowest usable is E2/D#2 (like mezzo piano loud), love projecting G2 or F#2 in forte, yet i want to improve both low power (like a mezzo forte C2) and high range (it gets really hard at D4, E4 is like chest limit for me). Also endurance is a problem for prolonged sessions. I also love some mornings reaching as low as G#1 in chest (like a hum), but on average day B1/A#1 is the bottom. Two years ago i could barely hum C2. I feel like I will not be an oktavist but atleast I can take any low notes we have to sing with average power. Great video, love your talking voice.

    @@Ioannis_Tsoumaris I think I can relate this video. Don't be so harsh on the note. After doing better on my G2, like what a baritone should do well with, and sometimes having a resonant E2 when I'm in a very good mood, I think that I should learn to calm down and relax on my E2 to see if it might get better instead of going the compressed way with vocal fry for resonance. I can do a better E2 when I am calmer. I have also done a relaxed and clean G1 one time, though it was low on resonance. I will also use this method to increase my high notes, hoping to have a consistent G4 in chest one day. I already did good by not pressing on my G2, but I forgot your words and pressed a bit on my E2 as well as on my E4. By "pressing" do you mean constricting your low notes?

    @@asin8507 tbh there wasn't too much of a change on how low I can get (most days I can hit a D2 with little to no warm up when I'm relaxed), although I've more frequently been able to hit lower notes with my morning voice (C2/C#2) and one time I even got down to a B1 for a brief moment. What actually improved was the resonance on my lower notes, although not by that much. But it is wildly different from person to person and in my case I had an early growth in puberty and my height is already stagnating (which can also mean that my voice won't change that much, although, for example, Geoff Castelucci's lowest note at 20 years of age was a C2 and you know the beast he is now). And also I don't really take singing that seriously, I just sing sometimes and that's it. So long story short, it depends, you can stagnate like I did (I still have hope lol) or maybe you can drop down to the first octave and become a bass boosted demon idk lmao Anyways, sorry for writing something this long and good luck

    My lowest note from videos I saw as a kid was about a G3. When I turned 14 my voice changed and i could consistently hold an F#2 for my lowest note. Never higher, never lower (not even with morning voice, although I did hit weak E2s when I was sick). When I turned 17 I saw this video and practiced it for a while. Fast forward to when I was 18 I woke up one morning being able to hold an E2 for the first 30 minutes of the day. Next morning I was able to push an Eb2 out. Then a few weeks later I had a very quiet D2 one morning that was lost 5 minutes after waking up and was repeatable almost every day (although it wasn't comfy and needed pressing). A year later at 19, my lowest sustained note in the morning was a C#2 but that has only happened two or three times with a C2 slided note. Now I can hold an E2 into the end of the day. Even my friends and family have noticed the change in tone and depth of my voice. Everyone thinks I am a bass (im more of a bass-baritone now). Really hoping to be able to sing a C2 or even a Bb1 someday, so I'll keep this going. Thanks so much! Greetings from Canada.

(i can make C2, that is too quiet for using in choir) I want to ask if it's good, to train vocal fry as loud as possible, or is better to use subharmonics. Your voice is amazing and my goal is to at least project A1 loudly. Do you use any techniques as subharmonics? What Is the best way to train to extend my lower range? Thanks for answer!

  • @Ioannis_Tsoumaris

    @Ioannis_Tsoumaris

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. I am not the one who would say to someone else to use any technique. As I explain in this video, you must master your modal voice first. You are only 16, and you want to sound like me, or any other basso profundo in their 40's, is this possible? With this, I only mean that you have to be patient till your voice gets more stable, at least at your 20+, and your voice will show you its potential. So, if you are in the c2 area you are in very good position, If you try to sing in the low area, without pressing for projection, your voice will be comfortable at this area and will start to go deeper buy it self. The secret is to work near your bottom without pressing at all, and you begin to go deeper, one semitone at a time, little by little, and all your notes will become louder. I wouldn't suggest vocal fry for any reason to a non proffesional singer. Subharmonics is better, and yes i can do, i have a couple of videos with subharmonics, but they are no use for me because i go to 0 octave and i can use them only in voice acting. I don't know if i helped you but i hope you will be patient and accomplish all your dreams

    I would agree but, it is really important the mindset someone has to grow his voice to a good level. Most people don't have it and burn their voices with other techniques without giving time to their voice to grow first. When you practice wrong your voice doesn't grow. We have many people that thinks they are the strongest and deepest because they produce a crappy resonant sound with their mobile phone, and unfortunately they don't listen. They even think that they are better than Glenn or even Zlat. Anyway. I thank you and I hope that no one will be discouraged. Especially when your voice is not matured, why? Because the muscles are getting lazy to go low with the easy way, a thin cracky sound that most of the people thinks it is modal. If you don't seek perfection you will never develop a pure sound. See for your self, in all the videos in the net. There are only a few real profondos and no-one is getting lower than f1. They have a thick and pure timbre and they don't force to go deeper. They can, believe me, but the sound is more stressed. Fry is good for professionals with a mic who have a trained voice and they hit some low fry notes and are getting paid for that. I hope i helped you a little

I will make a video explaining only this, it is the most important. When you work your voice with the proper placement you will sound unbelievably clearer and stronger when you sing. See your videos and notice how strong and low your voice is when you speak, and crystal clear, and how chocked you sound when you sing, even higher from your speaking voice. I was doing the same mistake till i found the way to sound properly. Keep that in mind, all the notes must come from the upper area of the skull, not from the throat because it sounds blurry. He can give answers that will explain the natural limits of our voice. Then it is a different matter of how to extend these limits. In the first given time, I will upload at least 2 videos explaining the real definition of the voices category, and another, how to identify in which category our voices are. Greetings!!

    It happens to everyone, but to me happens the opposite some times. Depends on how i use my voice. If i warm up my voice not only stays very low but it is becoming stronger and deeper. This is happening to me because i am a contra bass (my throats construction is like this). If someone is a simple bass, or a baritone, his voice will go to its natural base, no matter what. To be able to lower it you must exercise down there until you will reach your limits. If you are young don't worry now. Start worrying after you become 30++ . The law says that all voices deepens through the years, and if someone is a bass he will gain even more

    I don't remember much because I wasn't singing back then, but I always remember I had a very resonant bassy voice. The voice will be lower as you grow because like your nose and ears are growing till death, it is the same with some muscles inside the throat that makes the sound deeper and bassier. Hello Brady. By clear note, i mean modal and easy in our register. By pressed i mean modal but not easy, so we press to hit it no matter what. Sometimes it might be a little fryish, that depends on the person. When i press i mean, i am hitting the note, even if my throat is not in a good day, so i don't wait to be relaxed or perfect and i am forcing my way through. First If you are at least 20 years old, then you don't have to be afraid that your voice will change register. Second, when a bass voice is tired, loses it's lows but never loses the middle and upper area. Third, When a bass voice is tired, as a safety, raises the tone in the speaking voice too, because you haven't lost the ability to go low, the muschles and your voical folds are tired for a reason (you, can think what you have done) and no matter what you do, can't produce an audible sound. SO, rest your voice, don't sing, don't speak loud (even better not atoll), don't press for your beloved extreme low's, drink a lot of water, and after a week, maybe more, maybe less, your voice will come back. There is and another chance, i wish you don;t have this(i have), gastroesophageal reflux. I have this and i found out 3 years ago. Fluids from the stomach (like vomit) are burning your vocal folds and there are occations that you can't sing for weeks. Don't worry, you are still a bass🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
