The Google UX design course is super useful! Good luck :)
This is a great illustration of working adjacent to UX (marketing and web) and using that to shift right into a UX role/ or any role that really interests you. ALL the schooling and experiences built a solid foundation, including tattoo so recruiters who dismissed that aspect are just - ugh - uninformed. For anyone else looking for a UX role please do note that too many recruiters and corporate HR reps **do not understand this role AT ALL** so Lily's approach of going right to the UX people at the company is peak networking gold! this is so important. As a UX leader, there are several people who have reached out to me directly in the past who I continue to advocate for, and are top-of-mind when a UX role comes up.

@@Deimonos85 It's unfortunate that you introduced a gendered perspective into the conversation. Lily's competence and abilities should be the focus, regardless of their gender or appearance. As professionals, it's important to recognize and appreciate the skills and experiences that each person brings to the table, rather than making assumptions based on stereotypes. Let's keep the discussion focused on promoting equal opportunities and fostering an inclusive environment for everyone interested in pursuing a career in UX, which is central to such an empathy-based career.
Our stories are kinda similar! For me though I worked in graphic design for 4 years, I quit my job bc I couldn’t take it anymore (I was underpaid, burnt out, underperforming, & it was super toxic work environment on top of everything) and I started to really regret my career choice. Working in design I was exposed to UX and became somewhat familiar with the very basics of it and I thought it was really interesting. I had been dreaming of making the switch for so long, I just didn’t know how until I forced myself to figure it out. Bc I was unemployed I couldn’t afford any classes, not even the Google UX course, instead I went to target and bought a notebook and watched every single free UX video and free resource I could find. I filled that entire notebook out, then I skimmed through my entire work history for any UX relevant thing I could find, polished it, did a few practice projects, and rebuilt my portfolio and resume. Then I just started applying everywhere. I got super lucky and landed my dream UX position that I thought I could only accomplish in my dreams lol. I did have imposter syndrome for the longest time, and maybe I was an imposter bc I didn’t have any formal UX training or education but I’ve learned so much in my position. I really threw myself out there and manifested and sometimes I still can’t believe I did this. It was worth all the pain I went through being unemployed 😅 idk why I watch these videos bc I have the job but I think I just love hearing peoples stories and finding other UX designers.

@brittanyk9577
Жыл бұрын
@@looksmatteronly It’s hard to say exactly where I started and got to where I did after but I will try my best! I started with researching common UX terminology and memorizing/writing down the definitions. Those definitions lead me to learning about UX processes such as the design thinking process aka definition, research, analysis, design, and validation. And also UX strategies and UX best practices, such as doing a competitive analysis. Learning the difference between UX and UI. I learned about the different types of UX such as UX Research, UX design, UX writing. I started following a lot of UX designers online and binging their content which lead me to discover more things to learn and research. I just kept going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. OH and also even though I couldn’t afford the google UX certificate program, they have a FREE trial for a week, so I did the free trial and skimmed through as much as I could to try to catch definitions and more things to research. I only got about of weeks worth of learning out of the 6 months they offer but it was enough to get me some more exposure. I hope that helps! Honestly following designers online probably helped the most bc there are so many UX channels out there that want to help current or future UX designers like this one ❤

Manifesting is important, but being open-minded and eliminating (or at least a willingness) your own bias, in design, is essential. As a User Researcher a good Designer to work alongside is so important, I've worked with brilliant and bad, the ability to verbalise decisions to others is the greatest skillset you can have. This video has been so helpful. I’m currently in my junior year working towards my Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Information Technology at Arizona State University and I’m feeling the pressure to start working. The pressure is completely internally driven-I just can’t wait to get in there and collaborate! I’ve spent the last 4 years working for myself building a e-commerce retail brand that wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought it would be. I had no clue business wasn’t for me until I was in the trenches-but I built my own brand, designed all our deliverables myself including our website and I absolutely fell in love with creative problem solving. I’m struggling to connect the dots for my future employer to show that, while I haven’t technically worked in this field for someone else, I have loads of designs showing my progress and passion for the craft. I appreciate you laying out the steps you took to get where you are. It helps me see where I’m at in the process.

this is so inspiring it brought tears to my eyes. i'm going through the same process and it may be a little bit more challenging because i intend to move countries. it's just the beginning but i'm manifesting the shit out of it! thanks for the video and congratulations ❤
This was an amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing. I am currently transitioning into this role as well. Best of luck to you! Looking forward to what you make next!!
I can relate so much! working 70 hrs a week my full time job, during nights studying UX design and working on my new YT channel on the weekends. I am so focused to change my career i sacrificed my health, my social life everything! so nice to hear your story! i hope i will be able to tell one soon too
I'm currently looking to switch careers from being a teacher to a UX/UI researcher and I just wanted to say that this video was not only informative but it was INSPIRING. I completely identified with you as you talked about how your marketing job was draining you and after hearing you talk about your success from reaching out and building networks I was inspired to email my research advisors from university. Doing so brought back so many memories of my fondness for research and discovery. The fire of passion that went out months ago was lit again tonight thanks to you. And now I'm motivated and determined to do the work necessary to work in a career that will make sure it never goes out again. I'm **manifesting** this shit for my 2023. LEH GO!

This is 100% not normal this is the exception to the rule im not shitting on peoples dreams but i promise you this isn't the usual an don't get discouraged if you cant find a job i know people that have been applying for years in UX
Hi Lily! New sub here! First of all,I’m so glad I was recommended this video, it just gave me a much needed boost of motivation lol. I’ve been trying to learn UX through online courses for about 3 months now, but it’s been hard for me to picture a positive outcome for myself because I feel so inexperienced and I lack the confidence as well. I have a question for you: Did you feel any form of imposter syndrome when applying for these positions? And if you did, did it ever, albeit momentarily, stop you from wanting to make the career switch? I’d love to hear your response❤ I’d also like to ask if you have the links to some of the videos you used in your self-taught journey? I’m off to watching your previous uploads now lol, can’t wait to see what you put out next!

Hello I'm glad you're here! Of course I felt some imposter syndrome along the way, I speak about that in some of my vlogs when I asked for a promotion, but the key is to be almost over-confident (or at least act like it). I mean confidence when reaching out to people, in your unique value and perspective, and in your vision of your new job/life in 3/6/12 months time. I did have moments where I thought am I going down the right path? Do I have the skills? Is this really my dream job? but I looked at this less as a "dream job" and more of a dream lifestyle - remote creative work from home, able to gym on my lunchbreak, chill colleagues/fun to work with. I wasn't going to settle until I found those things so the imposter syndrome died down. Also I'd really recommend the M3 material design website, lawsofUX.com, I watched these on my learning journey too: - kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZaOx8yngLvffLA.html - kzread.info/dash/bejne/m32lmqiFpJTOhbw.html - kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZOqqdCOhKjKXdI.html - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJyOptmTpabVpKw.html - kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZuctbxvj5zPk84.html Please keep me updated on your journey!

@@PetyrC90 yeah it was showing you the absurdity of it. No one gets jobs on looks.
Realistically: Step 1: be pretty. Step 2: be smart Step 3-#: follow step 1.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. From the way you speak to the editing, it made me feel happy to watch. You're an inspiration thank you for sharing your experience. You just gained a subscriber
This video is exactly what I needed right now. Thanks Lily! I had kinda given up on the process of making a portfolio because it seemed a bit daunting. I needed to be motivated again and this helped quite a lot with that!

Man, pretty privilege definitely real
So you messaged the head of ux design and he invited you for coffee, i wonder why.
Incredible!!! Congratulations to you, you must be a very hard worker. 💪
Thanks for sharing your story, it's so inspirational and hopeful 🤗 I'm a self-taught Web designer for a couple of years now and I decided for a career change/boost so I just got into a 6 month UX design course. Watched a lot of videos about UX here, but none showed detailed work like you did and what this job is about. Thanks for all the tips, they really are precious. Your personality is also very welcoming 🤗😇
Was the boss attracted to you in anyway? Let’s be honest here.
