I plant garlic in all my vegi boxes. I’ve noticed significantly less aphids and other pests since starting that. Chives as well, but garlic seems to work really well.

I live in a rural area where deer are the most voracious garden pest. I planted creeping thyme and chives around all of my outside borders and the pungent smell it gives when they step on it deters them better than any repellent.

Hello Ben, I use a plant-based dish soap (a formula of 85%). Not only is it safe for most plants, but it actually acts as a mild plant food booster to your regular fertilizer regime. Here in the U.S. I use "Seventh Generation" Lavendar/mint scent.

I’m a fairly new gardener. A couple of years ago I decided to learn more and grow a decent garden. Our soil was awful! I had okay crops the first year, but I they weren’t lush. I noticed I had hardly any insects. And I’d learned that a garden should have them. I set about amending the soil, bringing in compost in bulk, etc. Last year the garden began showing the effects! And this year it’s taken off and I’ve noticed not only pests, but more birds, butterflies and good pollinators, but a lot of cabbage moths. Still, I figure I’ve set something in motion and the garden will find a balance. I have so much food out there that I’m not worrying about pests, other than a bed dedicated to carrots. I covered that. Root fly be damned! I thought, I must be a real gardener now because I’ve brought all this life, good and not so good into the garden. It feels great. Your channel was one of the first I found, and the practical advice and the love you give the garden inspired me so much. Thank you. 🇨🇦❤️👩🌾🍁🥬🥕🌶️🫑🍆🥦🥒. Now I follow a number of channels that have helped me learn and I have a new sense of community because of this. All good. 👍

Hi, Ben. Sometimes I really wish I lived in your climate, but then, N. Florida does have an almost continuous growing season. Our disease and pest pressure is horrendous, and we pretty much have to get on a pest control schedule and stick to it. Couple that with periods of drought followed by weeks of daily rain, and we find it hard, if not impossible to even apply pesticides. My solution has been to obtain and apply beneficial nematodes as soon as the danger of frost has past, and again in the Fall when the temperatures are consistently below 85. They work like magic, so long as we don't get a frost or freeze, and the temperatures stay below mid-80's, or they die. Excess rain will also kill them off, too. However, these microscopic little buggers are harmless to beneficial insects, but will attack and decimate pests, including soil bourn pests like root knot nematodes. Needless to say, from June to mid-September, and after our first frost, we rely on the methods you're using, or resort to OMRI approved pesticides or we get no appreciable harvests. Another thing we do here in the Deep South is pick tomatoes at "first blush" and ripen them indoors. Most of us plant determinant varieties of tomatoes that tend to all ripen within about a three week period, usually early to mid June. It's just too hot for tomatoes by the end of June. Leaving them to ripen on the vine is not advisable unless they're grown in a protected greenhouse, because stink bugs will sting them up and destroy them. On the bright side, using sensible techniques and responsible pesticide practices, I manage to grow and preserve about 80 to 90 percent of our produce for the year.

Try cabbage moth decoys. See my post above.
You mentioned the specialised and the broader spectrum insecticides; a good tip to give would be that the broader spectrum insecticides are more likely to negatively effect the beneficial bugs (due to them being less specific). How I handle black aphids is by just cutting that part of the plant off. Cutting seems to prevent spread entirely whereas squishing works for only a few days (and then the eggs hatch I suppose). Having the aphids is more harmful than cutting a few leaves off.

I've had great success this year in mitigating pests by adding a birdbath to my vegetable garden. I change the water every day and the birrds and the bees are visiting the water. Hope that this works for you as well. I also use crushed egg shells around areas that slugs love.
So thankful for all your work, would like to say: grow hops vs. japanese beetles, it's a tremendous trap crop. Yes, I know, as a fan of beer, this seems like blasphemy, but, they love the leaves. So, MOST IMPORTANTLY, early morning/early evening, knock them off in bucket of water/soap/vinegar. During daytime, they'll fly off. Been doing it for three years, they haven't gone to anything else in garden. Hope this helps.

I wonder if slugs and snails would venture into hops areas as well. Maybe it could be a double draw away from the rest of the garden. 🎉
I use neem oil and castile soap, diluted with water and sometimes steeped garlic water added. I also use the dried plant.
Alternatively to dish washer liquid I use potassium soap, so when used it will add potassium to the soil. Also it pair up very well with neem oil, this will kill aphids ( also be careful with ladybirds, I don’t think it kills them but it’s not a pleasure for them )

This year we are growing more polyculture beds and not using covers to see how everything fairs. We have lots of different flowers around the plot in amongst the veg and leave things to go to seed and flower. So far middle of July we don’t have any probs. Last week masses of cabbage whites flying around and I keep checking the various brassicas dotted around the plot. The only real problem we have are sparrows and I also saw fledgling thrushes eating plants on the corner or edges of the beds. So I just stand a small piece of wire at the edge and that’s all I needed. I have seen quite a few snails but not many slugs. We try to keep the ground around the plants clear of low dead leaves. We have a bird feeding station amongst our apple trees. We put a scarecrow in front of the cherry tree and I think that was enough to deter the magpies from eating all the cherries as they did last year. I know all what you have just suggested works but we wanted to see how just letting the good insect populations control the bad. Seems ok so far not 100% but almost. Just want to grow naturally and no dig.I do love watching you though as you have some good ideas and I always read your article in kitchen garden

Chilli and garlic spray is a good one also on occassion on the allotment we've had badger and deer devastate sweet corn crops i find debris/scaffold netting secured with cable ties to anything tall & sturdy(metal tubing,thick canes,etc) keeps the badgers off as they tend roll among the corn flattening it to get to the cobs it's also tall enough to keep the small deer out.I go with the flowers/herbs too i have them all over the place the only thing i do different is try to clear the allotment of pest bugs/larva early on around the start of April using a nematode mix specifically designed for allotments/veg gardens that targets about a dozen of the most common pests i do this twice at an overall cost of £16/$20

WOW! I've been having an unprecedented attack of aphids this year....love your videos.
Great stuff Ben!!! Excellent video… I use all the stuff you covered plus a couple more methods… My 2 chicken coops surrounds my garden (chicken moat), and I plant sacrificial beds outside of the coop perimeters… If nothing attacks the sacrificial beds, great, more to harvest… But when something does attack the sacrificial beds, I either catch it early, or if it is bad, I unleash the chickens on it… They eat everything, including all the bugs… Lifecycle interrupted… I used to put down slug boards in addition to the leaves, and had a garden duck that I would bring into the garden with me. I would walk around and flip the boards, and the duck learned pretty quick to stay with me, because I was leading it to all the slugs and snails, which it loved… Then I would get it out of the garden before it tried to eat anything else. I no longer have slugs and snails in my garden because they can’t cross the chicken moat that surrounds it, and have been eliminated within, via the duck (why not a goose or a chicken?… We’ll see if anyone gets that)… But the slugs and snails have been entirely eradicated within the garden. The duck was also delicious, as well as very useful for a period of time… Circle of life and all that rot… I rarely need soap spray or DE, neem, spinosad, BT, or any other organic control methods… I make awesome compost and the plants are very healthy. I also plant tons of flowers for the beneficials… I also grow tons of garlic, rosemary, lavender, and other gopher repellent plants on the inside perimeter… I had tons of gophers when I bought the property. So I started off with gopher repellent plants, and gopher eating chickens… It’s worked out rather splendid for me (and the chickens)… Chickens are little dinosaurs that love eating rodents. I taught them that rodents are food when they were fresh out of the brooder… Just feed them mice, and they figure it out almost instantly… Chickens are the best mousers I have ever seen Better than dogs, which are far better than cats, but the chickens put them both to shame. They love eating rodents, it’s by far their favorite food. Small snakes and lizards are great, as they eat a lot of bugs and won’t bother your veggies… But they tend to eat too many dung beetles and I like all the work that the dung beetles do for me… Not that it’s necessary in the garden (if you have good compost), but they help a lot in the pastures (if the chickens don’t get them… Cus the chickens help a lot in the pastures too. Anyway… Great stuff… I always enjoy your videos and upbeat style. Cheers.

My preferred spray-on mixture is water in which quassia chips have been steeped or boiled, plus a drop or two of neem oil, and some washing-up liquid to "cut" the oil slightly. The pigeons here regard my Taunton Deane kale as an all-year, all-day fly-in diner, and when they've taken the tops out, the cabbage whites start on the rest. It's a good thing I keep propagating it.

Love bug netting! I did have a cabbage moth inside but was easy to catch. I need to find taller stakes for when Brussels get bigger and better way to secure down. We have had severe drought in WI, US. We installed irrigation in one garden this week and the day after we got Rain!🎉 The MAJOR problem is deer. The plants have dried up everywhere and they like our salad bowl😡. We have to barricade everything with anything we have if it’s not in fenced in area. I’m nervous they may try to jump 7’ fence now. It’s been an awful time and now they are eating hostas which they never eat. We are attacked by everything this year. Voles! I’ve never seen in my life, gophers and moles in which the latter we haven’t had in years. There are a lot of grubs and robins are digging things up for them. I think I will need to treat the garden with Milky Spore. I had to use Spinosad on potato beetles. I tried hand removal and it’s impossible especially with a lot of plants. I still have something in garden digging at the bottom edges of beds and eats lettuce. Any ideas? I’m thinking either voles or birds. It’s just been the worst gardening year I’ve ever had. Late no warning freak frost, plants broke dormancy early from heat and froze, extreme drought where no rain from May to just this week. All I’ve been able to do is run with the hose and battle attacks. At least we have been getting rain now. However, we are SMOKED out from fires this weekend with worst today. I don’t know how anyone can endure that in CN, it’s awful enough here. Shade fabric was necessary this year and I think it will be needed going forward as the UV rays are much more intense. Want to set up a permanent cable system so I can move the fabric easily when it is needed on like a clothesline T over each row running N-S so as the sun tracks it will move the shade. Hope I can find the parts I need at resales, ect. Great points! I see you have a leaky hose 😅 So happy I have at least 1 garden with irrigation because me and the hose are not getting along in this drought. Oh, let’s not forget to add the dreaded vine borer in which we had to do surgery for already. 😵💫

Just remember to reinstall the dust after any rain or watering. Only use when necessary because too much dust will wash into the ground and injure your garden worms. But make sure you use FOOD GRADE as this will be around your eatable plants.

My biggest pests ( besides deer) is potato bugs !!! I've been just picking them off and squashing them. My goods are covered with the orange blood of legions of 'tater bugs I've slaughtered I did find some slugs when I uncovered some more garden to plant beans, but got rid of them and put out beer Thanks for all your tips. I have lots of flowers and other things the bugs like . Have a happy harvest day. Not ripe tomatoes yet !!! Still waiting

Hello Ben, well I have been living in Australia for the last 19 years and vegetable growing has been such a challenge, but I’m happy to say I’m moving to France , Brittany ( could not avoid to live back in UK) but only across the water, but my question is, will the gardening tips you give apply in France as well, the time of year you should plant veg, etc? Or should I be looking for a French gardening book, I think I will still follow what you have to say, because it sure helps here in Oz. Do you have a book on gardening or a chat on when you should be planting certain veg? Just love your videos thank you Ben.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I reckon you'll be just fine following my advice gardening in Brittany, which is pretty similar to England's Southwest. The great thing is your weather will be a bit better year round, so expect better growth!

Aphids are the bane of my existence 😭 I’ve lost so many plants to them since living here (in Southern Arizona) and don’t ever see predators in my area, even late in the season. They seem to target my summer and winter squash no matter what I try

I'm sorry to hear that. The more flowers you can introduce to tempt in aphid predators the better. It really seems to have an impact.

@@GrowVeg I have a bunch of calendula and marigolds incoming but also bought some nasturtium seeds so my fingers are crossed for this year! I was also planning on ramping up the dill/onion/garlic/basil production to see if that helps as well. Worst case scenario this year I’ll go to neem oil but I would much rather not!
Hi Ben, love this video. I'm thinking about planting up a small pond to attract frogs to keep the flies and slugs down, what do you think?

I think that's a great ideal. Having frogs/toads on site definitely helps with slug control. Thoroughly recommend it!
I've just started using garlic and black pepper infused water as a preventative spray. Obviously be careful around salad crops if you don't like the taste!

Great advice Ben I have been having no luck protecting my stuff this year cabbages and swedes courgettes eaten over night I have them in raised beds and covered with netting any advice ?
@GrowVeg
10 ай бұрын
It sounds like either something has managed to get through the netting, or you inadvertently trapped something in there which then couldn't escape to ate everything! Also, if the damage is quite widespread over several plants it sounds like you may have a slug problem. This video may help with that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH6qt9mkdr3Lf7A.html

Calcium nitrate helps with leaf miner. If you get the silvering on your lettuce or beats calcium takes it away.

Nice 💯
My ribes got a lot of aphids last year, distorting lots of leaves with red blisters, so I just tried 25 gr of bio soap made of Potassium and Coconut oil, melt in 1 liter water, to spray the leaves UNDER and OVER; I also applied it to my Rhododendrum which are suffering from many different pests. Will let you know how ot goes, cheers

HI Ben what would you do for Cricket infestation. I am in Northern Idaho. I have a very short growing season and with less rain this year the crickets are really bad. It seems they are really liking my cabbage and broccoli and cauliflower.

Will lead miner effect brassica? I will use BT only on young brassica to allow them to establish before the butterflies disappear ready for an autumn and spring harvest
@GrowVeg

There are types of leaf miner that feed on brassicas, yes. They are quite hard to control because the grubs are literally buried within the leaves.
i am replacing my fleece with insect mesh, hoping that it has a longer life than fleece? Is it ok to use a soapy water spray to get rid of aphids? I have found it works,but is it ok with organic gardening? Pinching out the tips of broad beans really dors work. I pinched out the tips of 4 of my plants as soon as i noticed a few aphids on them, and the others never got attacked so a pretty peat free crop :-) I use garlic spray to deter slugs and snails

I do find that insect mesh tends to last a bit longer than fleece, yes. You can use soapy water to get rid of aphids - like the one I made up in the video. You may want to use a ecological/plant-based dish soap/washing-up liquid.

Hi Ben, my beetroot and chard have been attacked by leaf miner this year. I am removing the affected leaves, but is it OK to compost these or should they be binned/burnt? Also, I find used coffee grounds to be the most effective deterrent against slugs in my raised veg beds.
@GrowVeg
11 ай бұрын
In theory adding affected leaves to the compost heap could hold the leaf miner over to next year. However, you can add them to the compost heap, just be such to crush/squash the leaves first, to kill off any of the grubs still inside the leaves.
