How Hockey Goalies Get a Better Glove Hand

Спорт

We are going to review some drills to help you practice catching at home. Grab your glove, your mask, and some knee pads, and then come back and learn HOW TO GET A BETTER GLOVE HAND and have less pucks BOUNCING OFF OR OUT OF THAT GLOVE.
Follow at least two of these strategies to make MORE SAVES by NEXT WEEK.

Three comments to share with the group about Glove Saves: 1. You need to set up your glove in the position that is most comfortable for you - at Nine O'Clock (shake hands position) if you are taller, or as I'm only 5'7, I set it up at around 11 o'clock. I can rotate my glove down for lower pucks much quicker than I can moving my glove upwards, and I am always wary of shooters trying to go high over my shoulder, particularly if you are butterflying. Set your glove when the puck comes over the red line, and stay focused; 2. Ideally you want to catch the glove in front of you, and always track from the release into the pocket. While the glove saves where your arm extends behind your body are athletic and fun, it also means that you were beat and lucky enough to make that snare. Keep the glove in front of you, and always follow the puck with your eyes by turning your head, watching the puck into your glove. When you execute a proper glove save, think about where your head ends up. Ideally it's turned slightly and staring at your glove where the puck just disappeared. Before your games, throw a tennis ball against a rink wall in your ready position, just to get the feel of watching it into your glove. Don't forget to "move yourself" into the save - extending your arm towards the puck can only get you so much coverage - leaning in with your body, or giving a slight push in the direction that you are making the save will give you additional body coverage in case you are slightly off with your glove positioning; and 3. Holding your glove in the proper position and making quick twitch saves requires very strong shoulders, upper back and traps. Use your dryland training to build up those muscles, and you will see that not only can you sustain that position for longer, but your glove will become lighting quick when it needs to twitch and explode. A great glove save is BY FAR the save that gets my teammates pumped up (and me as well!). When you make that beautiful glove save, don't showboat - simply hold it in your pocket till the Ref / Linesman comes by and let them take it from you, as if to say "no big deal". After a while, you'll get in your opponents' heads and they will either hesitate to shoot glove side (because they know you will stop it), or simply try to find other ways to beat you.

great insight! however, reading the release is practically imposible, and sometimes tracking the puck is even harder, you can see, in teh slowmo repetition how in many (or maybe all) the nhl glove saves, the goalies turn their head after the puck hits the glove. I believe is mostly repetition, and yes getting used to turn our head to see the puck in the glove. Also I totally agree on having the glove...and blocker extended towards the puck. A great aftershave...save, is to have a reaffirming gesture, Shesterkin does a very particular one, he hits his pad with the knob of his stick. Smiling a little is ok, so your mind and body can learn that you actually love that you just made and they will work on ways you have more of that. Also...who doesn't love when a shooter looks up to the sky or say "f_ck you goalie"? well...the shooter himself fo'so'😛

Before goalie I always caught naturally with my right hand, but I'm right handed as well, always done glove on left hand. I do drills such as these to help with my glove hand and it almost seems like I'm better catching with my glove than my bare hand haha. Idk though. Thank you for this video as I've always been weak with my glove and I'll do drills like these more, feels like it would be helpful to bounce a ball against the wall and catch it with your glove especially before a game! Also Maria I was wondering do you still play goalie today? Just curious :)

Wow - impressive that you naturally catch with your right, but you have your glove on your left - that's a big adaptation. Thanks for sharing your experience. And to answer your question, I sure do continue to play - had a game yesterday - made some good saves, let one or two stinkers in, had a blast though. One more game for this season, then a break for the summer.
