I never had any issues the plastic part that holds the wheel wearing out. The wheel always took a lot of force to pop in/out. If the wheel bearings seize up, the axle won't spin in the plastic wheel holder. The wheel simply won't roll at all.

9:32 thank you for this sound bite.. im going to save this video and use it over the p.a. at the store i work at regularly. I agree. Im not that dumb.... thanks for the support.
Before places started banning them everywhere scooting around in my Heely's was the most free I have ever felt.
So a couple of corrections based on experience: firstly, you didn't *need* the tool or the cap. I got pretty good at popping the wheels out by hand by prying at them from one side using a thumb, and I just never bothered with the caps. It was only a problem in the winter since the cavity would get hard packed with snow and be very slippery indoors. I actually just left the wheels I'm most of the time during the warmer months. I just learned to walk with the side of my heel making contact with the ground first instead of the wheel. Second: the plastic retainer for the axel never wore out during my time with the shoes. Like I said, I could get the wheels out by hand, but it never got any easier to do as time went on lol. Also, while I guess it's possible that the axle could get completely seized and spin in the plastic, you'd never be able to use them enough to do any damage. Any amount of water getting into the bearings would cause them to rust, and while the wheels would still rotate by hand, if you tried to actually ride on them when they were rusty, you'd stop rolling in just a couple feet. In other words, unusable. I learned how to use split ring pliers at a young age simply because I was constantly taking the wheels apart to clean and lube them up so I could keep riding them. Ultimately, I think I only stopped using them either because I outgrew them, or more likely I lost one of the wheels haha

Back in 2006 they were as nice as any skate shoes at the time. I was in third grade so I rode around with them everywhere I never took em out haha....
Love the historical content!! Keep these up and even get the team to make some to free up your personal time....
I remember my 4th grade teacher would intentionally call them "Wheelies" to make it seem like she didn't know what they were.
Even at the time, spending like 120ish on a pair of shoes for a kid was insane. I was fortunate enough to have a mother who went through with it. Was a fun shoe! A shame they couldn't improve upon it today.
had a a pair of some off brand ones when i was 7, the difference was there was a mechanism that pushed the wheel in or out, and i dont think it bothered me much and was quick and easy switch
1 Heelys + 1 roller blade combo was so fun as a kid.
"Heelys were getting banned for injurys." Not where I grew up, adults just hate fun!
I broke my ankle when I was a kid on these first time wearing them. Shit still affects me till this day 15 years later
Interesting question of what could have happened if they introduced a higher quality line to go alongside the cheap ones. Like, ones for kids and ones that were built right for XTREME sports or whatever.
Good stuff man
I know a lot of KZread videographers actually really love them as a easy way to get on the go dolly shots. You don't have to lug around a skateboard or something similar, and you don't call attention to yourself with a secondary piece of gear. It takes a lot of skill, but it's absolutely a grab and shoot type of thing.
Born in 91 these things were crazy when I was in my middle school years 😂 not in my neighborhood but in the “nicer” neighborhoods
I bought my son two pairs of heelys. I never expected them to be a great pair of shoes, but they did make it much more enjoyable going to the shops together. The first pair were much better quality than the second. I always thought of them as a toy, not as a serious skate alternative
I used to have these in the mid-late 2000s, and I loved them.
I still have my old pair from the late 2000s, I don't use them anymore but they're still mostly good, except the worn down heels of both soles, but they survived the few years of abuse I put into them, general travel and skate parks, and I could still probably just chuck them on now and go rolling around the streets without issue. Their quality is so much better then the ones you've showed off. They still used fake leather and plastic but a lot less flimsy materials and over all they're a more rigid shoe.
I had a pair of these in 2003, 8 year old me absolutely loved them and got in trouble all the time for wheeling around at school. I didn’t have any trouble popping them in and out by hand and kept the wheels in my backpack. Don’t remember how long they lasted though.
this shoe is why I always tie a knot after the bunny ears
Still glad they were made, it was blast as a kid!
I recall there was a performance type of Heelys targeted towards adults/pros but I think your summary rings true overall
Dude knew the old philosophy, “know the difference between quitting, and quitting while you are ahead” I do believe if someone can rebrand the shoe and come up with a more performance based shoe than it could go back up. Banned products tend to sell more, ie the Cronus Zen back in 2021 sold 110,000 units in just the month of December alone
I loved them as a child, subtle when walking normally and when able to I could zoom and fly ahead. I remember when in vegas it was so useful ha. For me I stopped when they started banning them in public spaces like malls and stores then I got discouraged. Thankfully it was time since I was kind of growing out of them.
I remember the hype around it when I was a kid in 2000s... so nostalgic!
Yo, Rose i love your videos, man! Got the heelys one, but now WE NEED A SOAP SHOES VIDEO (grind shoes)
All my kids have had Heelys. They loved them and I think they actually are really well made shoes. They lasted a lot better than any Nike or reebok.
They didn't fail in my opinion. They were blacklisted and banned. That seemed to be more detrimental than any business decision or lawsuit.
These were so fun back in the day
I worked at a big chain bookseller from 2002-2006, and I was frequently telling kids wearing heelies that they had to walk while in the store.
Can you review soap/epic grindshoes next? They're quite popular in 2000's too and pretty much inspired from inline skate/rollerblade(CMIIW).

I'm surprised the Heelys and Soaps collaboration shoe wasn't mentioned.
Heelys in malls never bothered me. I was an adult so id just watch. Looked fun.
When they came out, the quality of the materials were great. That shoe was built like a rock
I remember heelies having reinforced soles for grinding & most definitely leather uppers.
I got a pair back in the day, and no joke, a week later our school banned them. What never made sense is that scooters and roller blades were allowed at my school, but not heelys or skate boards.

Nothing makes sense in schools. My niece told me this weekend soccer is banned at her school. Originally because you had to stay 6 feet from each other, but then it just stuck. So soccer is out, BUT poker for cash is fine. Even she thinks this is the dumbest stuff she's ever heard. They can even pick up snow at school. Not you can throw snow ay each other, you can't even pick it up. It's wild out there in the school systems.
Too bad the creator didn't bail when the company was worth $1B...

I never had these but this video made me think of some other skate inspired shoes that I had as a kid. SOAP shoes! I wouldn't be mad if @RoseAnvil did a video on those too! Had some good times stomping (they were so heavy) around in those!!
My route from home to my first class in 5th grade was a perfect gentle downhill slope. I rode from door to door in the mornings.
You should review some baby and toddler shoes we likely wore as children like Stride Rite. They sell a lot of used baby and toddler shoes online. It would be interesting to see the quality of these shoes.

I like the idea of childrens shoes. especially the name brand ones vs like a walmart kids shoe head to head. is there any quality in the kids name brand athletic shoes or is it just a big brick of foam that costs the manufacturer 99 cents to make that they are selling for 70
Soap shoes next?

@@jonathankulesa I could never forget something that almost broke my femur. Lol
The wheel in the shoes I had as a kid could pop in and out as you pushed down onto the wheel. No tool needed. They were fun in malls until security came down.
I can see heelys making a comeback into popular culture in a few years
As an adult, if I had extra cash, I would buy quality Heelys or other similar shoe just because I never got to try it when I was younger and I don't care if people think I'm being silly.
Had these back in the day, my elementary school banned them but it didn’t stop me most of the time
“I was mechanically walking around like a fool” 😂
2:18 Every time I hear the word “pudding” now, I think of Ron DeSantis.
Flop? The only flop from Heelys caused me multiple concussions.
I remember ripping through Disneyland in my heelys when i was a kid. Some of the workers would ask me to take the wheels out occasionally but id just pop them back in, no one really cared that much then. Good memories lol.
i had heelys as a kid and loved them. one shoe i wish i had was soap shoes, which i thought might be covered in this video since, last i heard, heelys had bought out soap. would love to see a video on soap shoes in the future
Me and my brother recently uncovered our Heelys after about 18 years. He tried them on, and they worked!... For 2 minutes😂 the wheel absolutely disintegrated after one pass on the sidewalk. We loved the crap out of those things, and mine still fit me as an adult. Plus, they were a shin workout like no other! I'll always remember my Heelys fondly.
Damn, am i aging myself by thinking of la lights when you mentioned the lit soles?
