Do you spar with headgear or without??? I use headgear about 25% of the time. It's all dependent on the type of rounds. I explain in the episode.

I use headgear all the time, amateur and olympic boxing is with headgear so it's much better to learn how to fight with it on before any tournament or competition

Been sparring with headgear on since day one and I've been training for about 7 months now. I don't really know any different at this point so I have nothing to compare it to. But, I feel like there have been a couple of spinning backfists I've taken to the side of my noggin that were...softened...by the headgear and probably saved my eardrum from damage. Idk. I can't imagine taking big impact without headgear just while training and sparring. Doesn't seem worth the risk.

Vaseline on the head gear is huge. The increased friction from normal headgear would turn glancing hits into weird jarring rotational force, which rattles me way more than normal hits to the head.

If you want a headgear that is. It cumbersome then buy the “Hit N Move - Air Armor Precision Headgear”! Yet by all means always wear a headgear when sparring.

I personally dont like wearing head gear. I agree with everything in the video. I only wear it because i have to if i want to spar /fight. But if i had a choice i would not wear it. I feel there are way more cons then pros in headgear. If anyone has ever been hit with headgear on they will realize it does nothing/or very little for damage. I really dont like how much it effects my vision. But now a mouth piece/ gum shield makes a lot of sense, to have something to bite down on when in an exchange is very good to have.

Amazing Gabriel, I definetly Agree, I sparred with headgear on last Sunday, for the first time, and I felt really comfortable wearing it, the only downsides were that my head was a bigger target, and that lots of the shots, glazed off my headgear, and I had to stop to adjust it back, but overall, I will definetly be sparring with headgear, because I will be needing to wear it, for my first kickboxing fight, overall, such an amazing video topic Gabriel, I really found this video useful!

Some of the best headgear is open faced Top Ten brand or low profile type headguards because they are lightweight and narrow but still offer protection from the most common cuts. Bigger is not better. I love this video because he points out exactly what the problems and risks are with wearing it regularly.

a problem i had i didnt realise would be a thing when i visited a boxing place that made me use it for sparring is that since your hands are further away from your head when you guard up, a lot of punches were slipping through that wouldn't normally

I've never used head gear. I have this option because I don't intend to compete since gear is required for smokers and amateur bouts. I am almost 60 years old so am wary about head hits and I think gear increases hits and doesn't really offer protection. Some new people think my not using it makes me some sort of had ass by not wearing.

  • @ronnieo9571

Dear Gabriel, first I watch your channel all the time, and have gained tons of information that I use everyday. Thank you. I think you did the best you can do here, but I think boxing/combat sports seem to be way behind the curve here, as opposed to say the NFL, which is constantly looking for new materials and design to reduce bad effects from impact. It is disappointing. I am 65 years old, I have been boxing 6 months. I live in Thailand and I have a masters fight scheduled in Australia in a few months. I have 3 headgear, a Decathlon with face bar, a Ringside with Cheekguards, approved and required for USA Masters boxing, and a Sting open face AIBA approved headgear which is mandatory for masters boxing in Australia. Meanwhile Amateurs in various categories globally are shedding the requirement to fight in headgear. Also, Floyd Mayweather is on record saying he believes headgear does protect the brain, as he is not a nobody I give some credance to his opinion. I think it is impossible and not physically possible that all headgear perform the same way. I am not talking about the style, but rather the materials. I know I have been boxing a short time, but when sparring, my Sting Headgear does seem to soften the blows somewhat. I prefer it over both my other headgear for this reason. I do believe the gel layer performs differently than my much bulkier ringside which feels as if made out of wood when I am hit. As if nothing gives, no dispersion. Likewise for the Decathlon full face. I think its time that the new technology being invested in by the NFL make their way to boxing which is still using the equivelent of 1920s football leather. I dont think football helmets belong in boxing, but perhaps the new liners they experiment with could help in sparring and amateur fights. Also many have posted about vasiline, yes, I agree it will help on face and on headgear, but still many amateur orgs literally have in their rules no vasiline. Its crazy. I will say something about sparring at this age for those interested. I spar once a week 6 rounds. In headgear, with coaches present. If I take a shot, meaning to head or body, the kind of hit that might put me on a quick backkfoot change to defense, or lookingfor safety in a real fight....I sit down....sparring is over for the day. It happens occasionally, more rarely now that I have a better grip on defense.

I have rhe same issue with 16oz sparring gloves vs 7oz mma sparring gloves. As a shorter person, with the 16oz gloves, which are basically the size of my own head, I cant get get past the jabs and if I do slip, I get caught with half a glove to teh face. For everyone reading this, obviously, I'm an amateur and have a long way to go in rerads to footwork and movement but its rough.
