Jakob Ihre, cinematographer of the popular HBO miniseries Chernobyl, joins us in the studio to break down the lighting and camera for some of the show's most iconic scenes.
Chernobyl was shot with vintage Cooke Speed Panchro lenses, not the modern Cooke Panchro/i Classic lenses that were depicted in the on-screen graphic.

    Brilliant breakdown THANK YOU. On behalf of Cooke Optics I wanted to clarify that Jacob was using vintage Cooke Speed Panchros which we stopped making in the mid 1960s hence the difference in the colour between the focus lengths not the new modern-redesigned Cooke Panchro/i Classics.

    So OK, they had proper lights. The main horror of the show was that it had no sugar coating, just plain reality told from different perspective. Especially for people who did a bit of research on a topic beforehand and understands what all the small details and facts they tell means. The shock for me was that they could pull of Soviet 80's so damn good. Unbelievable.

    I really wish it would be filmed with Vintage Russian anamorphic lenses to really show aesthetics of that time. Stunning cinematography but I don't really like the storytelling part and "true history details". I'm from Ukraine and I don't like how "stupid" some peoplehave been shown. By removing any and all sense of tension? By using the same techniques used effectively albeit uncommonly for the last 3 decades? It was a cool show but none of this is new. Hell people have even made dramatizations ABOUT CHERNOBYL which were more successful in conveying horror than this was. This show is in fact extremely derivative FROM those prior dramatizations.

    I don't think it's propaganda but it's grossly inaccurate to reality, that's for sure... Dyatlov portrayed as a comic book villain. The made-up death-bridge scene which never happened. Victims are portrayed as "dangerously radioactive". Woman's baby is claimed to have died from exposure to husband. Even worse, baby is claimed to have "absorbed radiation" protecting the mother, what? Helicopter scene insisting flying over the building was lethal from radiation exposure. Legasov's exclamation that the fire will somehow kill the entire continent. Fake science lady's megaton explosion that was taken from a belarusian academic loon's real claim. Liquidator's shoe tearing up suggesting it's certain death to him for some reason.

  • @Pandzikizlasu80

    @Pandzikizlasu80

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@zolikoff It was more realistic then if characters stick to nuclear science. Do you think that a housewife and a gynecologist ware also a nuclear scientists? Maybe he told her so to make her feel better, she lost her husband and the baby! The funeral was real so the victims ware radioactive as hell. That liquidator was not terrified by the hole in his boot? He was told that any second longer on that roof is death! Even scientists facing unknown ware predicting the worse scenario and massively exaggerating. Why Legasov had such a hudge remorse, that he hanged himself? He sends the divers to that damn cellar, because at that point that disaster was possible to happen by the current knowledge, he didn't have years of studies and research on the disaster, he had to act in the real time.
