There are MANY other costs to running a fast food restaurant than just burger meat and potatoes for fries. Packaging, napkins, cooking oil, napkins, straws, toys for Happy Meals, cleaning supplies, etc. Like it or not, we live in a global economy.

If you buy in bulk (and I mean bulk) and know your way around the kitchen and can make a few sacrifices at times, then it's reasonably cheaper than fast food/restaurants. If you're not able to do that, you buy prepackaged food, or worse, have to buy certain ingredients, then your meals are probably going to be break even at best. Tastes better if you can actually cook, but there's been times where I've regretted some culinary decisions.

@@EbonySaints And if you're a single person, cooking in bulk isn't very appetizing unless you like eating the same meal 5x in a row. Like the saying, eat the same gourmet meal that many times continuously and you'll get a sickening reaction to it. I can attest that is exactly what happens when you try this living alone. So you end up making piecemeal food prep and the cost differential is not that much difference than fast food, and often way higher, or at least it was when I remember being in this bucket.

Granted, I've gotten really good at Chinese cuisine, but you can only make Dapanji or Hunan-style dishes so many times... I just cope by telling myself that it's cheaper than going to a sit down place. 😂😭 The worst part is that there's going to be a potluck at my job on Friday and I'm going to be forced to make stuff that people will just ignore and have a bunch of leftovers.

Same in Canada, it’s not even worth buying a Big Mac meal anymore for $11-12. It’s ridiculous.

With any luck, the hole-in-the-wall local dives will figure out how to deliver a similar or better experience at a better price. With even more luck, McDonald's will go out of business. Except they're a global company. And why are we using the Panama canal when we have entire states dedicated to beef and potato agriculture?

I remember when a McDonald’s Hamburger was $0.59 and my mom remembers when they were $0.25.

Best thing about higher fast food prices is that hopefully people will avoid this unhealthy food and make food at home. Paying extra for being lazy is stupid.

If In-N-Out can pull off better quality hamburger for cheaper price, McDonald has no excuse jacking up their price for lesser quality.

And fines also need to be % based, so rich people can’t just ignore them. First ticket of the year, 1/10th of 1% of annual gross; 2nd ticket, 2/10th of 1%. For someone making $40K, first ticket would be $40. For someone making $20,000,000, first ticket would be $20,000k. (Minimum would be the poverty line, so out of work people can’t just ignore tickets.)

Well, any company is going to pass on costs to its customers. If they have to raise prices, they'll raise prices to pay for it. They aren't going to accept a cut in profit margins. You can call it greed if you want, but companies are in business to make money and their greed in that area is just a fact of life.

Buy at a grocery store in the cooked meals section. MUCH cheaper. And, usually fresh(er).

The sad part is after you paid $11 meal and feeling unsatisfied with taste, volume and value.

I live rural and don't get to fast food much but, I went to Dairy Queen last month and ordered a flamethrower, fries n gravy, drink and small blizzard = $28. I went to A&W last week and Pappa burger w cheese an bacon combo was $24. I will now only go to sit in restaurants and either get steak sandwich or beef deep for less or around the same price.

I stopped eating McDonald's like... 20 years ago. You can't buy fast food with Food Stamps. You can though get Kroger Deli sub sandwiches if you savor a rare treat. Now I'll get a Double Whopper from Burger King and load it up with extra everything and fries for 7.99 on their Offers tab for mobile orders.

As long as people keep paying they will keep charging more.

Coming from a young guy btw, depending on how far he is from home, you can get him to come on over by letting him know you’ll be cooking a meal just for him made with lots of love! I always know how much effort my mother puts into cooking so I always try to eat as much of it as possible and if I’m away, I’ve made sure to catch some of the meal if it was made for me specifically because I’d feel bad if I didn’t. Plus, that food be gooood. Also, if your son’s restaurant is in NY lmk and I may stop by sometime. Cheers!

yeah, fast food not worth the price anymore

My wife and I took 2 of our grandkids (ages 9 & 11) to a FF restaurant for lunch and the bill was $48. A week later we took those same 2 grandkids to a local, family owned, sit down restaurant for dinner and the bill was $55! And we all ended up with a to-go box because the portions were too big for any of us to eat everything. Hmmm

When I was sixteen earning $1.15 per hour, a burger was .25 cents, fries .11 cents and a shake .25 cents. A full meal for .51 cents. Now at age 79 it cost $15.00 for the same meal. Crazy.

I stopped eating “fast” food years ago. Didn’t like the way it tasted and how bad it was for me. Now price hikes again. Some day we’ll say enough and close down all these joints.

I went to get take out at a chinise food takeout store in LI and it was 9$ for 4 wings when i cancled it she demanded i come in for a refund just to tell me dont come back ever again even tho the food wasnt even ready after shes literally in my face telling its ready. She said 6 wings 14$? That's just insane yall wings ain't even all that. For a snack basically?

I had not eaten fast food since before the pandemic. I was out and saw 5 guys - i loved their fries and the over filled bag. Stopped in and ordered the big burger and large fry. $20 and no drink. they wanted a tip! I can get a 10 pound pork loin at Sam's for the same price and eat better for days. It will be 3 or 4 years before I am desperate enough to try fast food again

Keep paying the prices and you will get more of the same or worse. Funny how the news reports never actually mention that part. They just find an excuse and latch on to that instead of telling consumers they're part of the reason the prices stay high.

Prices are not the only issue. Every time I go into a fast food joint the services is terrible. They get my order wrong. I literally have to use hand sanitizer to wipe down the tables because nobody bothers even clean up anymore. I’m not exaggerating it’s almost like a ritual, I have to be my own maintenance worker whenever I go into a lot of restaurants

True but I've noticed service is getting better, which is a reflection of the tighter job market. They're getting rid of incompetent workers and keeping the better ones. 2020-2022 were the absolute WORST years for service in many industries because they were hiring anyone with a pulse

McDonald's CEO recently said they found the customer's breaking point and will be scaling back. No matter what they might say, they are raising prices to raise profits. It's not the ecomony, the wars, or red vs blue. It's corporate greed. Don't eat this mess.

Price has increased significantly while the portions have gotten smaller, the quality has gotten worse, and the service is god awful. Most drive thrus where I live have very few cars in the lanes during peak hours with the exception of Chik-Fil-A. Their customer base is loyal and they definitely generate the best service along side In-N-Out.

I wish price was the only complaint. Lately, I've been noticing they've been shorting me out on bacon. A full serving of bacon is 2 strips and they snap it in half to make it fit into the burger, but if I am getting 3 strips, there's a problem there... It is one thing to be doing that when the item is on sale, but it is happening when it's full price as well and that's not right! 😡

Also I worked in fast food myself I work at a burger joint won't say which one but at times when food cost was high and the profit margin weren't adding up we would cheat the customer if you got a double Burger qoth 4 straps of bacon we would only give you 2 strips of bacon some drinks would get water down and fires wouldn't get stuffed the would just make it look full and the drink where filled to the top with ice

I hadn't gone in three years. The daily double was surprisingly smaller than before. I am glad if people can cook more at home.

Prices increase, portions decrease quality still sucks. They’ve lost the point of fast food. Even though I can afford it, I now don’t see the value or point they’re charging to much for something low quality it becomes difficult to justify it.

What these people spend on their “affordable fast food than groceries” I spend less on groceries monthly. Just learn to cook and problem solve

Even dollar stores like Dollar Tree have raise prices from $1 to $1.25 or $1.50.

I went back to burger king after a few years and was surprised to pay $32 for two whopper meals with cheese. I was in shock and thought to myself like dam no wonder the drive through was empty 😂

Recently I saw a local Church's Chicken's prices soar. Now they want over $17 for 3 pcs chicken and fries with 1 side order. I just walked out, not to return there again.

Fast food restaurants are ran by a franchisee in most cases. They are lucky to make $100-$150K in profit in a year. They are paying increases in wages, utilities like electric/gas/water/sewer, increases in taxes, increases in insurance, increases in the cost of goods/food, increases in the cost of machinery and/or to fix said machinery used in preparing food. EVERYTHING has got expensive.

At a fast food joint near me the franchisee comes to work in an expensive late model Mercedes, and his wife has a late model Lexus SUV. Then they cry poor mouth, and complain it is hard because now they have to pay their workers more. When they operate, they are very stingy. They only give you two packages of catchup with a burger and fries, and barely give out condiment sauces or salt and pepper. They were also ordered to throw away expired food product in the dumpster by the county health department inspector. After the inspector was gone, the franchisee then ordered his employees to go dumpster diving and remove the expired product. Then the franchisee ordered his employees to serve the expired food product to customers. Disgusting.

I remember growing up going to Mc Donalds maybe two or three times a year because my father for the most part was the only income and he was getting paid a little over minimum wage. "Nobody wants to cook at home anymore." Because unless you are feeding a family of 4 or more, cooking at home isn't as cost effective as eating out USED to be. Cooking for one or 2 requires A LOT of things that apartment dwellers don't have (ie, large freezer). One also needs copious room for lots of storage containers because eating the same thing for about a week at a time becomes a reality quick. The alternative is to waste a bunch of material because you need to cut the recipes down by 50 - 75%. Having to buy an ENTIRE shaker of an relatively expensive spice just to only use 1 ts is infuriating and costly.

I work and still prepare my own food and I actually DO save money. If I want a burger at home, I have to buy the groceries to cook 4 or more of them at a cost of $50 (bread, cheese, whole onion, whole head of lettuce, whole bottle of ketchup, whole bottle of mustard, jar of pickles, etc). Can't buy a part of head of lettuce. Can't buy half an onion. Can't buy a half pound of good hamburger meat. Can't buy only 2 slices of cheese. Can't buy anything less than 8 hamburger buns at a time. Additionally, I have to be willing to eat burgers again tmrw... and the day after that... and the day after that. Otherwise, the perishables that I didn't use on Day 1 will go to waste. Also, none of this takes into account the energy that I'll use to cook the food. Nor the money that I'll spend on transporting the groceries home. Nor the time (counted in hours) that I'll spend doing that cooking. Further, in order to cut the waste costs, I have to be willing to research recipes and figure out what else I can use all of the groceries for... which means storage costs (plastic containers ain't free). Or I could just go to McDs for a burger, pay my $10, eat my burger and go on with my life. Sorry but cooking at home for 1-2 people simply isn't cheaper. And it's far removed from being as easy or convenient as fast food.

Easy solution, double the minimum wage again and see if the fast food chains use it as an excuse to raise prices even higher.

I officially banned MDs about 3 years ago. My kids asked for it at first but after 3 years of me telling them it's not worth it, they will surely grow up laughing at MDs like I do.

Everything else, too, 12 pack of coke, $9, for sugar-water.... they lost a lot of business over here.

Fast food has never been cheap for me. My lunch is 1/3 cup of white rice (10 cents) and a slice of tortilla lime pollock fish (50 cents).

First off, I rarely eat fast food, but if I do, I only go to one place that is In-N-Out. Double double combo is $9.29

It's the best thing that ever happened to change my life! Ive saved so much money buy making my meals, eating more fruits and vegetables, and food prepping for the entire week.

I already switched to mom and pop burger chains where they get their meat and potatoes at the local farmers market.

Im so happy that it has gotten expensive. People will realize that not only is it detrimental to their health, but its also expensive. Good job!

The fact that fast food is unhealthy is not new.

There's a difference between inflation and greed. The latter is happening at an alarming rate. I stopped eating fast food 8 years ago. Not only is my body more healthy, but so is my wallet.

I've stopped going to fast food joints. Home cooked meals and taking left over dinner for lunch is how I've been doing it the last year.

The drink prices are absurd, even down here in Texas. $2.99 for a soft drink is beyond absurd. Not that I'm poor, it's the principal of the thing.

YUP! I used to have a dear friend whose family owned a bunch of convenient stores (Indian of course 😂). He told me their soda fountains were one of their biggest money makers, even at 99¢ for a Big Gulp. He said the syrup concentrate worked out to like maybe a penny per drink, plus a couple cents in the cup/straw/lids. HUGELY profitable, so think about when it's $3!!!

Can someone ask that 'expert' how the cost of shipping through the Panama Canal is affecting food that is sourced from the US and Mexico??

However, if that were to be the case, they would come from Asia in which case most, if not all, would go to a west coast port. Even if some of this package came through the Panama Canal, the cost per unit would be tiny as you'd have literally hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of these items loaded on a ship.

Greed . Not only is it now to expensive they are shrinking everything!! Including cereals and everything else in the supermarkets it's getting ridiculous. Enough is enough we need everything fixed !

I'm done with it. The price gouging of these greedy corporations is insane. As opposed to what is said in the video it is not mostly supply chain issues: their profits kept rising and now they are simply cashing in on their popularity, trying to pose as trendy, exclusive eateries for influencer types and top earners. I have totally weaned myself off. Even the discounts via apps are a total joke here in Germany for McDonalds, Burger King etc. My home-cooking intensified during the pandemic and me and my friends just kept at it. Just last week we had two burger nights at my place. And if I want fast food that's worth its money, I'll get myself a Döner Kebap or Dürüm from a small, local vendor.

The only question I have is why do things seem to only get worse ? Never better ! Prices go up never down can someone make it make sense ? Maybe I’m looking at the glass half empty ? Is it me ?

In and Out is an exception to this. The other fast food places have dug themselves into an overhead hole trying to monopolize the industry with expanded menus and gimmicks. In and Out has kept a small menu and has sourced supplies locally; all while sustaining low prices and paying their employees a quality wage. R.I.P Mcdonalds, and the rest. You get what you deserve.

That's what I'm saying, some busy In N Outs have 15-20 people working both front and back at the same time (making 20ish an hour) and their double cheeseburger combo still costs less than $10 in my city. All while Mcdonalds struggles to pay 2 people to be on the clock at the same time. Corporate greed.

"McDonald's gross profit for the quarter ending September 30, 2023 was $3.864B, a 12.12% increase year-over-year." They aren't going anywhere and will just continue to price gouge unfortunately

@@rowrowfightthepower9 Wish we had some of those around here. I've never seen one. BUT we've a lot of McDonalds and Burger Kings. In this area, the best burgers -- and the most reasonable prices -- are at non-chain burger restaurants. Mom and Pop places appreciate their customers and work to keep them happy with excellent service and really good food.
