The thing about Guilliman is, he learns quickly, and if you don't follow through immediately and ruthlessly, he'll plan his way out of anything and find a way to kill you instead. He went from being one of the worst in hand-to-hand combat, getting his ass handed to him badly, to being one of the best after one good training montage. Fulgrim was literally shot in the head by a Bolter sniper and Angorn was crushed by a War Hound Titan, Guilliman was blasted into the Void of space, Vulkan is literally unkillable, and so many of the Primarch have been stab in the gut by power weapons or had their bones and backs broken that they were able to walk it off after a while. Big G beats him out in larger scale conflicts (ie. a war fought across multiple sectors with access to supply lines from outside and political fuckery influencing shit) due to superior resource management, though. Consider that The Lion just about caught up to Horus's planetary conquest score by the time he was named Warmaster. Horus had a 120 year head start on The Lion, the advantage of being personally educated by The Emperor and his Custodians, and The Lion still nearly caught up to Horus's 200 years worth of conquest in just 80 years.

I just read Angel Exterminatus and the bit about Fulgrim shrugging off the sniper bullet isnt 100% true. Fulgrim knew that the sniper was there and willingly accepted the shot to earn Perty's help, but moved so that the bullet would curve around his brain instead of through it. Perty was next to him and he did not know about the sniper so he would not have been able to move like that (note Fulgrim was warp tainted at this time, Perty wasnt). It was well accepted by Fulgrim, Perty, and Fabius that the shot would have killed Fulgrim if it went straight through, but Fulgrim had that plot armor.

They seriously explained his survival by that? I mean that's easily the least plausible thing I've ever heard of in the warhammer setting. Which is saying something right there, given some of the crap we see fairly often, and tend to shrug off and try to forget. Perhaps the author and the editor had a bet to see just how low they could stoop before people called them out? Certainly I can't see any professional author plotting that steaming pile of Jokaero feces into a narrative for any other reason than some sort of sick humour or cynical wagering.

@@Shipx7 If what you're saying is that it was him influencing the bullet with warp spaghetti, that's much less egregious. I read your description as him dodging a bullet that was already passing through his skull, thats simply not believable to me, but I can think of any number of ways 'magic' could make that happen as changing the course of the bullet. Precog could let him know it was coming, so he stops/slows time giving him lots of time to set uo a magic forcefield channel from entry would, curving around the inside of the skull, and exiting again. Then he just has to 'catch' the bullet with the 'tunnel' and the rest takes care of itself... Thats what comes to mind first, likely better ways in tghe setting. It seems to me that WH has never really properly explained a lot of the 'magic' in the setting (which is frustrating at times, but I've read its a conscious decision so they can have competing and contrasting ways of getting spooky stuff done by different factions.

Probably, depends on the rules, but when he activates his sword he’s pretty broken in terms of duelling ability, and he’s also a pretty deft hand with sorcery as well. It’s likely he just beats them purely with magic. If you put him up against good combatants with warp powers it would be interesting, basically a who can hit the other first sort of thing, with the obvious downside of Archaon not having access to ranged weapons. So somewhat surprisingly, the daemon primarchs would likely all beat him.

Everyone forgets that _killing_ a Primarch isn't the problem here. It's _making sure that they stay dead_ that causes issues. _The Khan_ experienced true death, but Malcador fixed him within a few days! Bobby G has been killed _several_ times, and he has recovered nonetheless. Vulkan is Vulkan; death is merely an oft-encountered speed-bump in his eternal quest to hug every Eldar he finds into _psychic paste._ But none of this changes the fact that Primarchs are _routinely_ killed! Killing a Primarch isn't a big deal if they don't stay that way.

One thing you missed is a vortex weapon. Even a loyalist primarch would have difficulty staying alive if they got caught in a vortex blast and shunted into the heart of warp space. As to the psyker angle, Primarchs know of that weakness and have ways to cover it. Leman Russ loved to carry a big detachment of Sisters of Silence with him, given his heat with the Thousand Sons. Those sisters are why he was able to smash Prospero in the first place. Also, minor corrections. Guilliman wasn't hit with a Chaos disease. He was hit with a poisoned blade by Demon Prince Fulgrim. It was Horus himself who got slapped with God Plague with a hit from the Anathame .
