How Hard Are You Willing to Work to Become a Doctor? | Beyond the Scope | ND MD

Welcome to the Beyond the Scope Podcast presented by ND MD. This podcast continues the mission of sharing the incredible stories and experiences of students, physicians, and healthcare professionals...but this time it's all about the things all those years of medical training doesn't prepare you for. Things that are beyond the scope of our practice.
Today I get to welcome back to the channel an old friend of mine who supported this podcast from the very beginning. From struggling with imposter syndrome, motivation, and academic identity in high school, Will has become an excellent example of the mantra that "hard work is greater than talent." Many feel because they were not inherently placed in gifted or honors classes throughout their educational journey that they are not worthy of the title of physician, and Will's story is here to encourage those with that frame of mind that the grade school system, and grades in general, are not a definition of your ability to be a courageous and caring doctor.

I am 50 years old and I will be starting my second year in a few weeks. I can identify with much of what he spoke about. It took several years of trying to improve my application, failing and giving up. I started college as a biology/pre-med major in 1991 and finally got into medical school in 2022! Stick with it and trust the process.

This was an inspiring episode for someone like me who has faced academic barriers in college and sometimes I want to give up because I feel like it's unattainable. It's all about the journey and not giving up, and I'll continue pushing forward :)

I am 23 and going back to school but I am in a similar position as your mom was. I have major health issues from years of substance abuse and financial stress and trauma. I additionally have a neck tattoo lol. Thank you for this. I can not wait to become a surgeon.

I'm a sophomore and had a rough spring semester. The past few weeks especially, I was doubting myself and even considered pursing a different career path due to not feeling smart enough. I teared up a few times hearing Will speak because of how similar his story and struggles are to mine. This episode really led me to reflect on why I fell in love with medicine and reminded me to keep pushing through. Thank you guys!!

Thank you so much for this beautiful episode Andy! Thank you very much Will for sharing your inspiring story! I completely resonate with Will regarding imposter syndrome and the struggles of being a good student and getting good grades, especially for med school application. I'm studying for MCAT right now and I've been in constant loop of questioning my abilities and my passion for medicine, but like Will mentioned, it's that pushback that always keeps me going. It's also interesting that whenever I feel low and think that maybe medicine is not my destiny, something happens that reminds me of my deep passion for medicine and motivates me to keep moving forward. I really hope that after this long dark night, comes a bright morning for everyone in whichever path they are. Best wishes to you both!

Loved this. You both are beautifully well-spoken, humble and shine with compassion and inquisitiveness. Seems like a healthy and prosperous friendship. I wish you both prosperity in your relationship to medicine, and want to say thank you to Will for that grace, and thank you to Andy for producing such necessary and great content.

I’ve never related more to a person than I did in the first 10 or so minutes of this video. I am entering my final year of bachelor’s in nursing this august and though I believe nursing will always hold a special place in my heart, my ultimate goal has always been to achieve doctor in front of my name. I really didn’t think I was smart enough in high school to achieve that. My point in this comment being, as somebody who has also struggled with incessant feelings of inferiority or lack of intelligence, hearing that you made it is so inspiring Will!

I don’t think that the humility, vulnerability, and courage it takes to both critique his own habits and elicit input from others can be overstated. Many people will struggle and suffer in silence and fail before realizing that the shame statements they make to themselves about their aptitude and abilities are not true.
