How Hard are Polyphia's Riffs to Play Really? (Playthrough)
Hi friends I made this channel for fun since I wanted a platform to motivate myself and hopefully others and to rant a little heh.
In this video I'm playing a few Polyphia riffs I've learnt and talking about my journey from a beginner guitarist not knowing a thing about progressive rock & guitar to attempting one of the hardest riffs that I know.
If you liked the video pls like share sub comment blah blah, I'll be uploading a full instrumental + vocal cover of this Japanese rock song I like soon and a bunch of other random music projects :D

@bass-bv7iy ego death if def on top, abc is hard but ego death if something else. The solos on ego death were INSANE. I'd say od is right after ego death.
Awesome ones you picked out and great analysis on them. Love you picked the shred colab riff as I think that's ones of the most beautifully written melodic riffs ever. Wish hed make a song with it. Keep rockin!
Great playing and analysis of the riffs! Just a little more polishing of techniques and you'll be amazing for sure! Keep it up!

Goat took me two months before i could play it clean, and a year to get it consistently clean. The Worst is about the same difficulty its just easier to fool your way through it because there isnt a super fast bit. OD still gives me a lot of trouble i dont claim to be able to play it even almost a year after learning. The shred collab, i can play it messy up to speed but right now im polishing it up playing it perfectly at like .8 speed and hopefully moving up from there. Playing God is incredibly hard but i have practiced it so much i have it clean enough that i warm up with it. If you dont play it for more than like two days its gonna sound terrible in warm ups. Great vid good luck bro

Excellent playing and I loved the captions too, made me laugh! I can play the intro to GOAT and the main riff of The Worst and I agree, the latter is more difficult to nail for sure. Both are incredibly fun to play and really aren't that difficult, so long as you learn all the different techniques like hybrid picking etc. You got yourself a new sub, keep the Polyphia coming!!!!

40oz (especially the part leading up to the the last part, around 2:44) is so damn hard to play. The whole song is sweeping motions and tapping.
As a complete beginner guitar player (but a violinist for 7 years) I’ve decided to start by teaching myself the riff for GOAT. Is that a bad idea? Probably. But I think I’ll learn a lot along the way doing it. If anyone has any legit beginner resources I would love to hear though since it would be good to back up my practice of this song while actually learning about the guitar lol

I think it's a big leap to go straight for, but doable and you'll for sure learn tons haha. As someone self taught with a piano background, I'd say just make sure that you learn how to play open chords and that your basic fretting and picking technique is correct. Any yt vid for beginners on picking will be more than sufficient (from my own experience anyways). Gl on your progress!

I would recommend practicing stuff with less right hand techniques being thrown at you. Learn how to use the pick properly then you can do whatever you want tbh. It’s just more important to make sure you develop good right hand technique now, so it doesn’t hold you back in the future.

Dude I was in the exact same situation. First thing I learned for guitar was playing God after 6 years of violin. A lot of skill carries over and harmonics are exactly the same.
For me Goat is an 8,5, genesis was a 3ish, playing god was 7, Shred collab a 10, OD a solid 10 too and egodeath is like 9
then the ABC riff came out where you need to hammer on with your Index, Middle, and Pinky finger and the distance between those hammer ons and taps are so far

Ok, this might sound a bit crazy but, I think I have a better chance playing O.D. than some of their other songs. With my instrument (hint hint) things like hammer/pull off and left hand tap(non-standard tech for what I study) is physically demanding and hard to produce good sound. However, I do play a lot of fast 16ths and "shredding" which is basically OD. Not saying it will be a piece of cake tho, im still not near prosessional to even play the standard reportire which are very similar sounding, written by someone the equivalent of Eddie or Ingvay in my field. And those were written specifially to be ergonomically playable on my instrument. Anyway, ill continue to work on it over time and maybe I can get it recorded some time in future. context: I play the Zhongruan ps. Its uhh... china guitar pps. check out Playing God cover on Guzheng, its really gd ppps. Reminiscence of yunnan 3rd mvt is the reportire for reference. I can play it, not up to speed yet tho. (also folk song by Liu Xing if you want) ppps. If your a fellow chinese instrumentalist, say hi! and jia you for practice! 😁

O.D. is the infinity symbol then ∞ I can play almost all the "interesting" Polyphia riffs including the JD Shred collab without issues. But after months of practice I can still only play O.D. at max 70% speed and with plenty of errors. If I increase the speed just a little from there it's will sound like complete shiet

@@Rei-uq1jv Sure, I'm self taught so I can't guarantee you this is the 'proper' way but this is what worked for me and what I'd do if I did it all over again. Every single new thing you start you should ensure you have the correct technique by confirming it with a lesson on yt, whether it's as basic as picking or strumming or how you hold the guitar. I would start learning the main open chords (C,D,A,E, G, Dmin, Amin, Emin) and the Aminor/major and Eminor/major barre positions. Even though this seems pretty acoustic guitar focused, it'll still teach familiarity with guitar and basic finger dexterity, plus you'll be able to play along to pretty much any song there is which is always a lot of fun. Find songs to play by googling pop songs in the key of C,D or G major and start as slowly as you need. Once you're confident with that I'd learn to play electric guitar focused songs by mastering power chords, which are much easier than open chords so shouldn't take nearly as much time. Find tabs for popular pop rock or punk songs on yt and follow along cos they're also really easy and you can play basically any song with it with just one shape for the left hand. I'm assuming u listen to kpop based on your pfp so the Shoot Me chorus by Day6 is a good one to start off with. Once you master those two then learning basic riffs/solos would be the next step. Just google tabs for simple sounding guitar solos that you like and learn it slowly. Once you can constantly pick the correct strings and are familiar with basic techniques like slides and pull-offs and hammer-ons, then I'd learn the genesis riff which introduces natural harmonics. The advice I gave is assuming you're just starting out guitar, so if I'm not specific enough in any area feel free to ask me again. Hope this helps! :D

Personally I find the jdsc riff and playing god to be about as difficult as each other. Neurotica I would say is overall about as hard as playing God as well. 40oz is just a little bit harder than those two unless you are really comfortable sweeping in which case it's probably even with them. Ego Death and OD are truly on another level tho when it comes to difficultly and then there's the Jason Richardson solo on Aviator which is borderline impossible.
