    I remember bursting into tears as soon as Aly finished her last pass in 2016. I still get choked up whenever I see that clip. She is one of the best to come out of the sport, in my opinion. Truly a mentor and a positive voice for the sport.

    Morgan napping in the gym on the mat is a MOOD hahahaha. Also I’m so glad Katelyn was able to find a love for the sport again with college gymnastics, after watching Athlete A it’s messed up how USAG didn’t give a crap about their gymnasts injuries, mental health or safety.

    It was wonderful to see Katelyn talking. She looked a lot healthier and more vibrant than ever, and it's great that she has rediscovered joy in gymnastics and is doing it for herself, not for other people. However< it is awful how USAG has behaved and the way the coronavirus has postponed the competitions< including the Tokyo Olympics< forcing gymnasts like Simone Biles and other victims of Larry Nassar to have to continue contact with USAG

    Similarly, I've not been involved in gymnastics - my background is in dance and martial arts - but I appreciate the sport for its athleticism and grace and admire these girls who are gymnasts. The determination to train hard and do one's best, and also to push through injuries, is something most dancers can relate to although thankfully there's not been someone like Nassar or the Karolyis in dancing.

    Ok first off, I am STOKED there's 6 episodes of this, not just one. It's so strange to be able to recognize the US gymnasts who is speaking based solely off their voice, how many interviews and videos did I watch to get to this point. Aly's "I WAS PISSED" is hilarious, she's a gem. She held herself so well after 2012. Katelyn's story breaks my heart, so much pressure and she was so young. I genuinely appreciate that this covered so many gymnasts and their stories, I don't think we see this kind of content frequently, thanks Glamour!

    Katelyn Ohashi story makes me feel so emotional every time I hear it. I was a competitive swimmer and started when I was very young as a way to cope with my father's death as a child. I loved it until I didn't because it became expected to be great. Whenever I didn't live up to those expectations I would feel like such a failure. I can't imagine ever being good to be in serious competitions so to listen to her story just crushes me. Getting injured and being forced to quit the spot was an incredible feeling but also a huge loss. Something that I had loved and then hated for so long was just gone. I am able to appreciate swimming more now but will never have that love for it like when I first began.

I know most 13-17yos couldn't handle the pressure and then if you do make it, then your career is basically over by 25 at the latest but you'll probably retire sooner bc of an injury which could be catastrophic. it's crazy as I think agreeable teenage girls take on gymnastics with a post career plan bc they're so dedicated to their sport.

One is for the ballet, second is the DANCING class, and... The gymnastics. It was a real challenge for me. I had to go to all of those classes in one day every single day. I even need to go to Wednesday and Saturday Math intelligence school. But I got used to it as years go by, nothing really happened much. But that was a lot of years ago and i can still remember memories of my dancing competitions, ballet and math championship. I wish i could feel that again too. But now im just some basic girl in this generation and i wish to have my abilities back again. And im doing that right now in the middle of the pandemic. Hope i get it back :)

Several adult gymnasts have come out and said that being told to ignore pain, hunger, and fear caused them severe long term trauma and shouldn't be celebrated..

    We constantly talk about the coaches, however there is no mention of the parents. You kids spine is all out of wack and you dont do anything? Your kid looks miserable all the time and you never question what is going on in their practices? The coaches are absolutely to blame but these parents turn their heads to the mental abuse these women went through.

  • @f.watson9933

    @f.watson9933

    3 жыл бұрын

    The parent’s do not commonly know because the girls 1. do not know how bad they are themselves and 2. do not tell them. Most gyms do not allow parents to watch team practices for a variety of good reasons though it opens the doors for some bad situations. I promise you that the mass majority of parents of these athletes are in no way turning their heads to the abuse that has occurred. This is a cultural shift that is taking place, but like any change in cultural norms, it will take time. Do not set blame on people about things you do not know or understand. I was a gymnasts in a gym that bordered on abusive for me, was abusive to others I know of, but because of my parents instilling the lessons and sense of self that I have plus what I learned in that very gym, I was able to leave before things went to far. It still side swiped my family to see what had happened. I had covered it up because I didn’t understand it. That is extremely common in any high level sport, athlete, and in mental health as well. Look at how many abused persons go back to their abusers. Look at how many abused children cover for their abusive parents. It is all the same psychological loop.

    @@saruhhhh I think it's worth mentioning, because this documentary itself makes no mention of that outside of "oh yeah her back was really messed up." They don't delve into ANY of the abuse or neglect in this video, and so mentioning it is worthwhile, in my opinion. The sport has had enough glamorization and we can't let up on the Truth dispensing just because it's an unpleasant subject. You ask"Why would you say that?" Well, because it's fact and needs to be discussed. Miss Moxie said: "I'm not saying its right, or that it's okay..." but it's true. And truth hurts and shouldn't be hidden away just because it's unpleasant. I think that's why she said it.

    Spondylolisthesis... A terrible back injury. I sustained this injury when I fell on an icy ski slope (I was an amateur) when I was 33. The injury has caused me to quit skiing as a hobby, I can't place my back in flexion, it must be avoided. Required years of PT to help stabilize, no surgery available I am told. Could result in paralysis of the legs, urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence in severe stages. This poor girl, to have sustained this injury so early in life. I am crying for her, I feel her pain. She is my idol, she could fly and all I wanted to be was like her when I was her age! I am in her camp, I wish we could speak about this injury together.

    I trained as a gymnast back in late 60's and early 70's, mostly because I loved the sport and not so much because I had ambitions to go pro. I started my training way too late (I was 13-14 yrs old) and I knew was too tall (5'-8"), but I did my best and while I did compete, I never did well in competition. Not doing well in competition didn't really matter much to me, I just loved more than anything else the strength and flexibility of my body, until I set my left foot wrong for splits and ending up tearing cartilage in my left hip joint. That was the end of my gymnastics and now, 50 years later, I have hip surgery scheduled for repair of the torn cartilage which has been injured many times since the original injury 50 years ago. But truth be told, it's a price I would pay again in a heartbeat. There is something just so wonderful about feeling the strength and flexibility of one's body that only gymnastics can bring to you...

It was so fun but we had no coaches who could spot us, no foam pits to practice moves on.. essentially nothing and on our own. It’s amazing to see the changes in the equipment alone and I wish I could’ve known what it was like to tumble on the modern equipment.
