Watching the respect he got in Physical 100 was amazing to me because he deserves every ounce. I don't think my girlfriend understood when he was announced and I got pretty excited. Sexyama is a legend no matter what

Same here. I saw him walk out and I jumped up and shouted “SEXYAMA!!”. She looked at me and said “wtf is wrong with you? Who is that guy?” Hahaha. He’s a judo and mma legend.
If you look at his losses in the UFC, he pretty much only lost to absolute monsters

Mad respect for him. Aoki been literally talking crap about him being Zainichi and representing Korea as well as Japan for over a decade. Aoki refused to get to Yama's weight class. After a hiatus, Yama returned, matched Aokis weight class and beat him. Dudes almost 50.. What an absolute legend and solid fighter against racism against Korean-Japanese people!

As if Apki couldn't be even more hated. I was so happy when Nagashima the cosplay fighter kneed him into the shadow realm after 3 minutes of shinya dive kicking into referee stand-ups
Dude was competing against those guys that was 10-15 year younger than him in physical 100 and Still beat most of them to the semi final, If he was 10 year younger, he would’ve easily won the show PLAIN SIMPLE
I don't think people realize how small akiyama was compared to his opponents. And so much of his career was pre-ufc.
Singer, model, TV, Movies, MMA, Judo, dudes doing it all! Respect to Yoshihiro!

@@Ew_. As a sports fan, I think it's important to call out cheaters, especially in combat sports, because it could be dangerous; and cheaters who are once exposed should never be fighting professionally again. Japan does it right for banning this guy. If you think that's sad, then its straight up just naive and absurd.
I became a fan of Akiyama funnily enough not from MMA, but for his appearance in Return of Superman. Only a few years ago did I notice that he appeared on both UFC and ONE, and even beat Aoki! Godspeed to this forever youthful man!

That Chris leben fight was a certified classic. The whole match was just so exciting.
Akiyama has a beautiful physique and yet, when he stands next to his opponents, he looks surprisingly smaller. Despite this, as the video notes, he fearlessly went toe to toe against his noticeably bigger opponents. Win or lose, unlike so many of today's BORING-ASS fighters who just want to not get knocked out and hang on till the end, he always gave an all out great show, full of lots of action and techniques. He also was a great role model, as he always showed respect for his opponents, had great style, and always conducted himself with class and manners. He comes across as a great representative for the sport, unlike so many of today's classless asshats who think acting like a classless ghetto-refugee with a vulgar big mouth somehow makes you a "badass" worthy of admiration, when in fact it only impresses ignorant meatheads who understand nothing about what it means to be a great athlete and a respectable person.
Loved him in Physical 100 in all aspects, was one of my faves I was rooting for
Glad he’s getting some recognition with physical 100
Just knowing him from physical 100 the dude is a stand up guy and new he wasn’t going to win, but wanted him too because he’s a class act person
He was very good, when considering how late he got started in MMA. Within the UFC, he was never champion calibre or even top 5 contender quality, but could still hang with the best fighters in the world. He was already in his mid 30s when he entered top level competition, which by fighter years is basically a dinosaur. His career/record would have definitely benefited from getting into the sport earlier.
It's crazy that he fought the Gracie killer and is still fighting to this day!

Sexyama is definitely a great fighter, but it bothers me if he is praised for fights like this when he was clearly cheating. He was greased and had a history of cheating in this same way in both mma and judo. This is why he's hated in Japan because he cheated against a legend. The man was caught on camera putting like 5 bottles of lotion on himself before the fight. That's exactly how you grease in both mma and bjj.

Great video as always. Would be better if the video featured your arms in a cutoff at some point.
Imagine if he started his mma career 10 years earlier. I think with him starting at 29 and getting his early experience in a much more brutal era is bad ass enough.
His physique got better the longer he stayed in One FC even at an older age. TRT is undefeated
He was an outstanding leader on Physical 100.
solid A-Tier fighter. just always fell short to S-Tier monsters (at their respective primes). what's impressive is that he's STILL going. culturally he's S-Tier for sure, especially for us asian fighters

That Akiyama and Lieben fight was fucking incredible. Holds a special place in my heart
Thanks for doing this video. Sexyama has interesting backstory behind him, and he's a good fighter with a rich career.
I love this guy! He has magnificent screen presence and would love to see him in a great action film.
Along with Sakuraba, Akiyama is my favorite Asian MMA fighter. I became a fan when he beat Mahoef, who was an absolute killer at the time. Akiyama's Judo is the best that I've seen in MMA, not surprising considering he's a 2 time Olympian in Judo.
Yoshihiro Akiyama would 10-8 Paddy.
Always a fair rating, keep up the nice content (:
I've done Judo all my life and his fight against Melvin Manhoef was the first introduction I had to MMA. He made me a fan of the sport so in my mind he'll always be special.
I love how the narrator talked about his loses with such gracefulness. I tip my hat to that sir.
Of all the UFC stars i've trained with, this guy was the toughest of them all. It's just unlucky that he is inbetween 170-185lbs and took very long to figure out how to managed the weight as he was attempted to bulk to be stronger for middleweight but yet slimming and leaning down for welterweight. As a Judoka, he opened up the avenue for others to join MMA, similar to aoki and ronda. A fun fact that people who didn't know him from his judo career would never know is that his original nickname in judo was hyakuju no ryuo.
i liked where you said he didn't really care about his scores, cause he literally said that himself that he wanted to fight to entertain, not to be the best
Great video.
I remember him as a guy who put oil on his body against sakuraba
He's a living Legend 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾!!!
This connects the pieces of me. It was so cool to see the respect he got on Physical 100 . Now I understand why, buddy could squabble.
I first new him from his Korean reality show, 슈퍼맨 돌아왔다 (The Return of Superman). It is a show where dads take care of their kids.
Crazy respect from his fellow peers
it looked like all but one of his UFC fights were an absolute battle! He fought some absolute beasts in the UFC, and He's definitely a lot better than I thought he was.
Love these videos. I'd love 'how good was Ryo Chonan' (the guy who flying heel hooked Anderson Silva). He had a really interesting career where he fought at light heavyweight for most of his career despite being a natural lightweight. Fought some of the best light heavyweights and middleweights, even beating Anderson Silva. Now he coaches guys like Shinya Aoki and Yuya Wakamatsu

lol dumbass, its because no true fan can respect a cheating mfer. He oiled himself against one of MMA's legends Sakuraba and ran away from the country because he was shamed so hard.
As a fan of him in MMA, I would hear people say how big he is in Korea. I was like "okay, sure". Then I watched Physical 100... wow. Also, seeing how that culture respects the older people in 2023, makes me mad at Americans sometimes.

Didn't connect, used to watch UFC a lot in the 2000s and remember watching him fight. Didn't realize until now
This guy fought absolute killers - Jake Shields, Vitor Belford, Aoki, Botha, Jerome Le Banner, Melvin Manhoef - and defeated some of them despite being the smaller fighter usually. Bollocks of steel
Put some damn respect on his name that name is SEXYAMA
Juiced to the gills the legend
His UFC fights were very close. Even Vitor Belfort said Yakiyama was skilled, but didn’t want to fight technically. He wanted to brawl. Belfort said he has heart.
