Akiyama has a beautiful physique and yet, when he stands next to his opponents, he looks surprisingly smaller. Despite this, as the video notes, he fearlessly went toe to toe against his noticeably bigger opponents. Win or lose, unlike so many of today's BORING-ASS fighters who just want to not get knocked out and hang on till the end, he always gave an all out great show, full of lots of action and techniques. He also was a great role model, as he always showed respect for his opponents, had great style, and always conducted himself with class and manners. He comes across as a great representative for the sport, unlike so many of today's classless asshats who think acting like a classless ghetto-refugee with a vulgar big mouth somehow makes you a "badass" worthy of admiration, when in fact it only impresses ignorant meatheads who understand nothing about what it means to be a great athlete and a respectable person.

He was very good, when considering how late he got started in MMA. Within the UFC, he was never champion calibre or even top 5 contender quality, but could still hang with the best fighters in the world. He was already in his mid 30s when he entered top level competition, which by fighter years is basically a dinosaur. His career/record would have definitely benefited from getting into the sport earlier.

Sexyama is definitely a great fighter, but it bothers me if he is praised for fights like this when he was clearly cheating. He was greased and had a history of cheating in this same way in both mma and judo. This is why he's hated in Japan because he cheated against a legend. The man was caught on camera putting like 5 bottles of lotion on himself before the fight. That's exactly how you grease in both mma and bjj.

Of all the UFC stars i've trained with, this guy was the toughest of them all. It's just unlucky that he is inbetween 170-185lbs and took very long to figure out how to managed the weight as he was attempted to bulk to be stronger for middleweight but yet slimming and leaning down for welterweight. As a Judoka, he opened up the avenue for others to join MMA, similar to aoki and ronda. A fun fact that people who didn't know him from his judo career would never know is that his original nickname in judo was hyakuju no ryuo.

This guy fought absolute killers - Jake Shields, Vitor Belford, Aoki, Botha, Jerome Le Banner, Melvin Manhoef - and defeated some of them despite being the smaller fighter usually. Bollocks of steel
