How Good Was Jim Brown Actually?

Спорт

Jim Brown is widely considered the most dominant football player to ever live. Blazing speed combined with brutalizing power, his game is like a mythical being. When the Cleveland Browns were at their heights, yes 60 years ago, Jim Brown was at the epicenter of the NFL’s explosion in popularity. But it’s been over half a century since Brown graced the NFL, so just how good was he actually?

Jim Brown was not only the best running back of his era but the best football player of all time in my opinion. I'm 72 and watched him play many times and he was amazing. He had no weakness. He had great power and speed and was an excellent receiver out of the backfield. Nobody has ever been on his level. GOAT with no doubt

IMO, the greatest part of Jim Brown's career is that he smart enough to quit while he was still on top. Rocky Marciano was a boxing parallel of an athlete who was smart enough to quit while was on top. They called Muhammed Ali "The Greatest" but that only possibly applies to the early part of his career, because it was sad and pathetic the way he ended his badly overextended career. Jim Brown never became the Narcissistic Egomaniac that other pro athletes became after him. He was a humble "working stiff" who saw Football as just a job. He had a "pride in workmanship" that is very rare today in any kind of job. Jim Brown was a Great Football Player, but he was even a Greater Human Being.

The fact that he finished 5th in the Heisman voting was disgraceful. No other explanation other than racism. Dick Schaap, the great sportswriter, surrendered his Heisman ballot privilege in protest. Hornung won it for an awful Notre Dame team, completing all of 59 passes and rushing for 420 yds. (an interesting stat: Barry had more runs for zero yardage and negative yardage than anyone in football) JB could run through three of them cuz he was bigger and stronger and faster - Barry on the other hand, couldnt go through three defenders, that's another reason he didnt get used in goal line situations. The top 2 RBs of all time IMO are Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. Jim Brown dominated in his 8-year career like no other RB ever has. You can't just look at numbers, you had to see him play to understand how absolutely dominant he really was. The comparison to Wilt Chamberlain as a dominant player in his respective sport is spot on.

The guy was 6 foot 214 lbs, which is not small today or back then. He had decent speed to rush for 1000 yds for 5 straight seasons during his career. The fact is Jim Brown was bigger and faster than Taylor and had better numbers, but Taylor was no "slouch" or had handicaps. This shows that Brown had competition who was good , but he Brown had a higher standard.

Man among boys. Played in the era of 12 game seasons. Extend what he did out to 16 and now 17 game seasons and nobody is close. Still remember him getting up slowly and walking back to the huddle very slowly after each running play. Conserved his energy for the next play. Never saw him wasting energy showboating after a play. Marciano would have never beat Liston, and he retired as Liston was coming up.After Liston beat Patterson , people wanted him to return to fight him, fot BIG $$$$$, he knew better....thgen after Listo dumped the fight to Clay/Ali he was off the hook. I'am not taking anything away from Marciano, but 49-0 means less than you think; there were a number of his fights, where he was behind but wore 10 year older opponets down, I give more credit to his management. He was to small to stand in front of Liston-Frazier-Foreman....If fighters fought toe to toe, in a small ring, no dancing & running NO ONE WOULD HAVE BEAT SONNY LISTON (when I say that I mean he wins 9 of 10, if not all 10 fights) with the exception of Foreman. Ali never really beat Liston (the Musliums would have killed him) Same thing with Forman, he was drugged the day of the fight; nobody in the Ali camp thought he could win. So they took it to Africa; then stalled the fight, physicing Foreman up; then spiked this drinking water at ringside. He was sacrificing his life, by trying his drugged up best, but is lucky he lost; or he would have never got out of there alive. Up through 1975 or so if they fought, not run, the best heavyweights were 1. Sonny Liston (5-6 years older than listed) 2. George Forman 3. Joe Frazier All three would have owned Tyson If you want to see what Liston's 84 inch reach would have done to Tyson...look at the Tyson Lennox Lewis fight on You Tube

Playing two less games per season, along with declining numbers due to age, they may not be as insane as you think. He needed another 6,000 yards just to make it to number one. He averaged 1,368 yards per season. So even if he could have stayed healthy, and maintained that pace, he still would have needed another five seasons to do it. It's fairly likely he would have, but not exceeded it by much. Barry Sanders would have obliterated it.

@@dme1016 Using your argument, Payton's competition WAS considerably better than Brown's, but the league improved more still in training, conditioning, and the overall power and speed in the 90s when Barry Sanders played. Throw in that Sanders got 5.0 to Payton's 4.4 ypc, which is huge. Now consider that Sanders is the all-time most in negative yardage, yet still got much more per carry than Payton, arguably the 2nd best of all time. I mention the negative yardage also to demonstrate that Sanders had mediocre at best, but mostly bad, 5-man lines to run behind, no tight ends, no pro bowl fullback to help. Since the Lions never had a decent QB, defenses keyed on him, and OFTEN had men in the backfield before Sanders could get going. Also Sanders fumbled way less. Loved Payton, really admired his durability and ability, but Sanders was simply better. The eye test bears(🐻) this out also.

Jim is one eclectic genius. @ 86, this brother is still with us. He, to me, is like Clint Walker, another hero from my childhood. All the best, Jim. I grew up in the 60's school integration of black & white children. Good times, man! Made life-long friends, to this day.

If you watch the recent A&E series about Playboy and Hugh Hefner, Jim Brown was also a scumbag and a horribly violent sexual predator. It's hard to watch without being sickened. Brown was an even bigger scumbag than Bill Cosby. WRZ 2022-03-13

I’m 74 and grew up in NE Ohio a little south of Cleveland. Watching Jim Brown lead the team each Sunday was simply thrilling for Browns fans. The way he moved effortlessly through a line of defenders, weaving around his blockers, breaking tackles, carrying or dragging people along for extra yards…a wonder to watch and appreciate.

I am 76 years old. Saw jim Brown play for most of his career. He was simply the greatest football player of all time. Arguably the greatest athlete in sports history. I have a son who is 26 year’s old, was the center on two undefeated high school football teams which won two state Super Bowls. A football fanatic. In his room hung a picture of Jim Brown. When Jim passed he called me from Boston to let me know of his passing. It’s the first and only time I had tears in my eyes over the passing of athlete. Brown was the “man”.

We can compare because a player done this a player done that. Well who is to say that Walter Payton wouldn’t have had just as many yards in his time or more then Jim Brown ? That is practically what your stating to me . So I am stating the same. I think Walter is just as good as Jim Brown.

Watching him run was shocking cause no one man could stop him and I often saw him continue running with someone on his back. It was absolutely insane at how good he was running the football. Jim Brown and Ted Williams are my most memorable childhood memories of professional sports. I once met Ted Williams at a pre season game. Much, much later I learned that it was actually Maury McDermott who I had met. My mom had lied! She would often call me to come inside the house cause Ted Williams was coming up to bat. His swing was just beautiful to see whether a miss and strike or a hit.
