Hawlucha's story is pretty much the story of a pro wrestler: starts out establishing their signature moves and strategy, then finds a tag pertner that plays to their strengths and have a great time with them, then loses the partner and turns into a lone wolf character, and finally reunites with the tag partner and they use their old and new skills to rock the new season.

I agree with you, but I also believe a Pokémon’s signature move shouldn’t be anything unbalanced or overpowered. Zygard’s Thousand Arrows being a ground type move that hits flying Pokémon and Calyrex Shadow’s Astral Barrage being insanely strong with no downsides are examples of signature moves being too powerful and making the Pokémon they’re attached to more annoying to deal with as a result. I love Pokémon having signature moves, but I hate stupidly powerful signature moves. There needs to be a balance.

It's funny seeing my name in an FSG video. Bringing Hawlucha to US nationals in 2014 was a case of a joke snowballing out of control. A friend challenged me to make a team featuring Hawlucha for an IC tournament earlier that year and I performed surprisingly well with it. I had a different team planned for nats but at the last minute I brought my Hawlucha team and was astonished by the fact that I made it to top cut with it. I think it only succeeded because it was a Kangaskhan check that surprised people with the sky attack + unburden power herb gimmick in a tournament where swiss was best of one. Either way, you brought back some great memories. Thank you.

One thing that was never mentioned in gen 8. Hawlucha was actually a large part of the OU metagame at the very start of the gen 8 meta. Hawlucha was an absolute MONSTER in early OU when Dynamax was allowed. It was the only pokemon at the time with access to stab Max Knuckle And Max Airstream, allowing it to be an absolute terror when dynamaxed. Hawlucha was a large factor in dynamax being banned in singles. It wasn’t much but it was a very important change that Hawlucha was partially responsible for.

Hawlucha being dominant whenever Pokemon exist to open the doors for it's tremendous sweep is so fitting for it's theme. You can just picture the likes of Rillaboom and Tapu Koko massaging Hawlucha's back in the locker room encouraging him and hyping him up while Hawlucha sits steadfast and determined, but silent as he mentally prepares to enter the arena under a thunderous crowd desperate to see it dominate in devistating yet honorable combat. That isn’t to negate Talonflame, Noivern, and Goodra, I just think it’s winning streak was in third place. Pikachu and Greninja being Top 2, and Talonflame, Noivern, and Goodra being below it. (And yes, that includes Goodra, given how it’s presence in the league kinda hindered its reputation)

Hawlucha was one of two Pokemon that got me back into the Pokemon after leaving in Gen 4. One boring afternoon channel surfing, I decided to watch a bit of Pokemon to see what Ash was up to those days. It was the episode where he was training Hawlucha to use Flying Press and I was like "What is this weirdass thing? Flying and fighting type? That's kinda dope...". The next episode had Skrelp and it reminded me of Horsea. Gen 1 nostalgia hit extra hard so I jumped up, went to Gamestop, and got Y that same day.

In the anime being one of Ash's main team in Kalos, having a majestic & flashy style to its fighting, while showing a compassion side with being like a brother to Noivern. All while being pretty strong in the competitive scene, having a really good typing, decent stats that can be pushed further easily with the core mechanics of the game (Substitute, Tapus, switch moves, etc.), & with GF giving it better moves & new items like the seeds to be utilized with its movesets, I can tell it's still gonna be strong competitively for generations to come! Let's give it up for the Mexican Luchador Hawk!
