How Good was Eli Manning Actually?

Was Eli Manning Good? To truly capture and evaluate the value of Eli Manning, it is our duty to look back at his historic rise. The best place to start would be during his college years. Eli Manning spent four years at Ole Miss playing in the SEC and had a horrible freshman year. It was truly a disaster given his stats. He played in 6 games only completing 16 passes from 33 attempts for a pass completion percentage of 48.5 percent. He didn’t even score a touchdown but had the misfortune of throwing for one interception. It’s hard to believe given those numbers that Ole Miss would want to keep Eli Manning for another season. But they did and our guess is that Ole Miss did so because of the legacy of the Manning name. Eli’s father Archie was a quarterback for 13 seasons in the NFL and played primarily for the New Orleans Saints. Eli’s brother Peyton needs no introduction but some reminding that he was a 5-time NFL MVP and regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play.
So it made sense to the head coach of Ole Miss, David Cutcliffe, to give Eli one more chance at the position. In Eli’s sophomore year, there was an explosion of his talent splattered all over the field. Manning played for 11 games throwing 408 times and completing 63.5 percent of his passes. He threw for just under 3,000 yards, scored 31 touchdowns, and only had 9 interceptions. To put things into perspective, those are roughly the same type of stats that Patrick Mahomes had in his sophomore year. It’s greatness matching greatness and in Eli’s case, it was his announcement to the football world that he was born to play this position and to excel in it. That he did in his senior year where he played 13 games and threw for 3,600 yards for a pass completion percentage of 62.4% scoring 29 touchdowns. It was a statement of consistency and reliability which propelled Manning to become the most sought-after player in the 2004 NFL Draft.

I think Eli is criminally underrated. Yes, he threw some boneheaded interceptions and was not the most consistent regular season QB. However, he was good enough to get you to the playoffs then great enough to get you all the way. He was extremely clutch when it mattered most. The fact that he defeated Brady twice in the big game is incredible. Not only that, he beat Favre, Rodgers, and loaded Cowboy and 49er teams on the road to make it to the big game. If the Giants gave him a better offensive line in the back end of his career and more stability in general, I think he could've won a third ring.

Eli had the perfect personality for the New York area as long as you had other leaders on the team. Nothing phased him. " Eli did not play with hall of fame offensive players like Peyton". That's because Peyton made them HOF. This is one reason I consider Peyton one of the greatest of all time. He made the rest of the team amazing. I'm a Giants fan and watched Eli's entire career. Eli has consistent coaching, OL, RBs and Receivers for AT LEAST 12 out of his 16 years. I know you wrote "end of career"....but 3 full seasons and 4 games, isn't really noteworthy, for the point you're trying to make. His career was solidified by then. Then you bring up his 27 ints. Sorry, but 27 ints is a lot. Lots of other QB have terrible receivers and OL, and they aren't throwing 27ints. There have been 6 instances since 2000 that a QB has thrown 25+ int in a season. Eli Manning is the only one to do it twice. You don't have to make excuses for Eli, to try and defend his greatest. Accept him for who he was... for the type of player he was. He was a very inconsistent QB, who didn't put up big stats. He finished his career with a .500 record and threw a lot of ints. His completion percentage was meh. BUT I would put him top 3 (EASILY!!!!) most clutch QB of all-time. And not just because of those SBs. Remember, I watched his entire career. His entire career, watching him play inside the 2 minute warning (before half, and end of game), was like watching the greatest football player of all-time. I had no doubt, he would march down field and score. And he scored TDs! He didn't always have to rely on his kicker to get him the win (Like Tom Brady has done in his career). It was so strange, watching Eli and Peyton. Watching Eli in the postseason/within 2 minutes, was like watching Peyton during the regular season. Then watching Peyton in the playoffs, was like watching Eli in the regular season.

Big Ben also had two super bowl rings but only one super bowl mvp as well. With Ben having the lowest passer rating for a winning QB in a super bowl for one of them. And Brees and Rodgers only won one super bowl ring each. At least for now since Rodgers is still active. So as a Giants fan I would take Eli all over again and keep both super bowl wins and super bowl mvps in a heartbeat. Philip Rivers the QB traded for Eli in the draft had zero super bowl appearances despite having a good career stats wise. It's all a matter of what stats do you believe show the true value of the QB. Others QB's had better stats and were much more consistent over there careers than Eli for sure. But I'll take the two rings and super bowl mvps Eli brought to the Giants and never look back. Eli when surrounded by a capable team that's wasn't badly injured had a knack for pulling off 4th quarter comebacks and absolutely miraculous plays when it mattered most. As a Giants fan it was a joy to watch. The helmet catch, Burress lob, Manningham sideline catch and so many others were incredibley exciting moments to watch live as a fan. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything. In my opinion Eli belongs in the HOF in Canton one day. If people hadn't talked so much smack about Eli from day one in the NFL and Eli wasn't constantly compared to his super human brother Peyton all the time... I believe Eli's career would probably be remembered in a much better light.

Eli threw 27 ints because he literally had no time to let receivers routes develop. Eli did not play with hall of fame offensive players like Peyton. The season that Eli had a lot of success you could tell he was extremely talented.

Eli has the most passing yards in a postseason for one reason only. He played 4 games. Most of the best QBs only have a chance at 3 games. So, let's be fair and compare the average totals of all QBs that played 3 or 4 games. If Eli is so great, you should have no problem with that. But, when it comes to yards/game, Eli falls to 14th. His yards/attempt are 19th. Brady was within 100 yards of Eli's record twice. In only 3 games. 2 others were within reach also. Eli is literally a below average QB that was carried through 2 postseasons by the defense and was given the MVP for 1 pass attempt per game. The defense did all the heavy lifting and got screwed.

I will note, completion percentage might not be the best thing to look at when trying to compare these guys. For a lot of his career, Eli was running and offense that featured a huge amount of deep routes. The expected completion percentage on those kinds of routes . . . well, it's not great. It was very different from today's NFL offenses, which typically prefer short passes with high expected completion rates that open receivers up to get yards after the catch. So just looking at Eli's completion rate compared with QBs in the modern era isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison. Either way, though, excellent video. It's always interesting to see these kinds of historical looks at players.

Yup. Its why I didnt mind his ints because when the pass completed that's a lot of chunk. I noted this plenty late in his career that while pass % of his went up their success became less likely because they were all dinky throws and relied too much on hit or miss running game. Eli is definitely a gunslinger. Let him sling it. I can live with an int per ger game and 'low end' pass % if he's getting big chunks of yards per pass. l0l Go 1/3 with the one completed pass being a 25 yard gain. Yes, please.

Let's put this in perspective. One of Eli's best years was 2015 with a 93.6 passer rating. And that put him at 13th. Take that passer rating back to 1995 it is something like 5th best. Of his era I’d put him in the same tier as the other two QBs of his draft class (Rothlisberger & Rivers), but he was never close to big bro Peyton or GOATman Brady (Who is though?), Brees, or Rodgers, at least in the regular season that is. Playoff Eli was a real thing and boy was he spectacular. And not one of them scored over 20 points. Even when in the regular season those same teams put up 45, 31, 35, 38, 28, and 37 points against the Giants. How do you explain that? Was that drop in points because of Eli? And Eli still barely managed to win. Eli needed multiple pro bowl QBs to have one of their worst days of the year to barely win Opposing teams scored 13 points lower than their season average. And Eli still barely won. If the opposing teams just put up their season average, with what Eli scored, the Giants go 2-6. Beating Tampa Bay by less than a point and the 2011 Packers by 2 points. He had one high pass and took a lot of risks that game. He was better than Peyton when he was healthy. Peyton choked a lot, even in the Colts Bears SB. Every year Peyton threw so many INTs in the playoffs because defenses figured out that to the side of the field where he pump faked to, he would throw to. He never corrected that. Defenses always picked up his slack, including Denver. Peyton in Indy was overall a disappointment aside from one title.

And the 2119 postseason yards? Yeah, 4 games will do that. Since some QBs have zero chance to play in 4 games, let's take the average of all the QBs that did play 3 or 4 games in the playoffs. Eli falls to 14th. He's actually 19th in yards/attempt. Many QBs were close to breaking his records with dozens of fewer attempts. Never even the best QB in the NFC East. And some things about his career are very misleading: Perfect passer rating in a game: Um. Eli was 8/10 for 2 TDs and taken out before halftime because the coaching staff knew he couldn't keep it up for another half game. Top 10 in yards and TDs: Even below average passing attempts add up over time. Eli is not in the top 70 for yards/attempt or TDs/attempt. Both years, the defense was labeled a liability, but in the playoffs, they had the lowest scoring defense vs the entire league. And Eli still needed lucky last second plays to win. Compared to Elway and Aikman: Comparing QBs of different eras is not fair. Troy had 6 straight pro bowl appearances in 10 years. Eli had 4 scattered over 16. The comparison isn't even close. He wasn't just clutch, but the 07-08 team overall were road warriors. And for that playoff run, it started off in Tampa Bay where all the critics picked Tampa over NY, it was 80+ degrees that day. The beat them in the wild card match to face Dallas in the divisional round. Dallas had beat them both times in the regular season and they are playing in Dallas with typical football weather at 59 degrees. Again all of the critics / announcers had picked the Cowboys over the Giants. Well we know the story, Big Blue upset Dallas in Dallas the #1 seed with a last second blocked field goal to meet Brett Favre in Green Bay the #2 seed. This NFC Championship game was the 3rd coldest game in NFL history at -13 degrees. Again all but 1 picked Green Bay over NY. It was back and forth all night, the giants made a last second run to tie the game and force it to go to overtime. Then giants prevailed in overtime! From there they went on to match up to the 18-0 Patriots. Both Dallas and Green Bay were 13-3 that year. As for the Super Bowl I don't think I need to say anymore with that escape and helmet catch! However, the Giants who finished the season at 10-6 were tied for the 3rd best record that season in the NFC with Seattle and they should have been 11-5. They got robbed in their last game of the season against NE, so it is fitting that they beat them in the Super Bowl to watch both Belldick and Brady cry! The 11-12 season was a different story. They were 9-7 on the season and had the worst NFC record to make it into the playoffs that year but they did win their division. They hosted Atlanta in the Wild Card game and again Atlanta was favored and we beat them pretty good. Then we went to face Green Bay again but this time in the divisional round who was the #1 seed with a (15-1) record. Instead of Brett Favre we faced Aaron Rodgers and again they were favored over the Giants. Well we beat them again to go and face the 49ers who were (13-3). They had one of the best Defenses that year, and without a doubt they were favored over the Giants. All stats aside the one thing they rarely mention is how tough he was. If you don't think so, just go back and watch the NFC championship game against San Fran during their 2nd Super Bowl run. Look at how many times he got pressured, hit and sacked, yet he was able to tie the game and take it to overtime against one of the Best defence in the league that year. Then he was able to beat them in over time to go and face N.E. for a rematch. And again he was clutch with a last minute 4th qtr come from behind drive to win the game. Again they were favored over the Giants. Again it was fun to watch both Bellidck and Brady cry again! For those who claim he's not HOF material they need to go watch another sport! For those who think "Philip Rivers" was a better Q.B. can suck on their 0 rings. He was bum under pressure! Yeah he put up a lot of stats such as yards, and td with low interceptions, but when it came to any significant game, he couldn't win even if the refs gave him the game! How many other Q.B.s made it into the HOF that have never won a ring? How about Dan Marino or Jim Kelly? They're both hall of famers! And not only did Eli and underdogs Big Blue beat N.E. in the super bowl, they did it twice and the first one was the best: 18 and 1 Giant Loss! When you take away a perfect season from the "media favorite"... if that alone doesn't get you into the HOF nothing else should! Eli was tough, and Brady was a crybaby! The NYG Defense proved that when they put pressure on him and hit him all day long! They should how good he really isn't! They held him to 2 touchdowns in both super bowls some of his lowest scoring games ever and they kept his total offensive yards to a minimal. I'm not saying that Brady isn't good, I'm just stating he was definitely overrated and Eli was definitely underrated. Yeah Brady in NE was 6-3 in Super Bowl appearances, however the first 3 super bowls were decided by 3 points each. The first two the Rams and Carolina could have went either way. The third against Philly with McNabb they won only because McNabb was sick throwing up on the field. They lost to the G-Men twice. They lost to Philly in their rematch. Then for the Seattle game, Seattle should have won that and probably would have if they would have put the ball in Lynch's hands, instead they decided to throw the ball and gave them the game. The Atlanta game, the Falcons out played them the entire first half only to self destruct and let them come back from one of the greatest deficits of all time in any Super Bowl. The Falcons had that game and blew it! As for their last Super Bowl appearance they had a rematch with the Rams although a completely different Rams team... and that was a low scoring game 13-3 which was N.E. highest point differential win of 10 points. All other super bowls were decided by 1 possession. So for their 6-3 record in Super Bowls their total point differential was 14 points, only 2 possessions overall. They could have easily been 1-8, but I also believe they had a lot of help and aid from the media, the refs, and big money. Now I will give Tom Brady credit when he left and went to Tampa and took them to the Super Bowl and won, his entire demeanor changed compared to the cocky attitude he had in NE. I'll give him credit and respect for that. However, he wouldn't have won that Super Bowl without Tampa's Defense stepping up and without having Gronkowski. We seen what happened to him without the Gronk this past year! Yeah, he is a good player, and he does have a love for the game but if you were to put him on the Giants team for the years that Eli played, I don't see him getting any rings... Yet Eli was able to get 2!

Eli played against 8 straight playoff teams that scored 6-23 points below their season average. And still barely managed to win 5/8 games. In 2 games, it went to overtime and he was a combined 3/7, 17 yards, 1 sack for -10 yards, so 7 attempts for 7 yards. And then he had to rely on opposing QB to still blow the game.

Eli is a QB that you can't judge too hard on stats alone. He came up big in the playoffs and has two rings. That's more than Aaron Rodgers and he equaled his brother who was, by all accounts, a much better player. I think the hard thing for Eli making the hall of fame comes down to how the voters see the whole picture. His stats aren't very good and don't indicate someone worthy of a HoF slot. If you take into consideration that the story of the NFL was changed forever by teams led by Eli, then I think he has a pretty strong case. If I was a voter, I'd elect to put him in. Beating the Undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl, and then beating them AGAIN 4 years later is the stuff of legends.

It isn't hard to come up big when through 8 games the defense allowed an average of 16 points. And Eli still needed lucky plays for last second wins.

@@tomknapp6194 Good teams win Super Bowls, no question there. I'm not sure how you could turn the biggest plays of Eli's career into a negative for him. Plenty of guys needed to make easier throws than Eli made in the clutch to win, and they didn't. He did, and I generally grade players based on what they did. I'm not putting him on my QB rushmore or anything, and every QB who is ranked ahead of him should (probably) be in the Hall of Fame too. I think a good comparison for Eli would be Jim McMahon. McMahon had a legendary defense behind him. 1 Ring. But did McMahon come up with the big plays like Eli did? No, not really. I think that's what separates Eli from the other QBs in the Fringe HoF tier

@@LottabulletsHS I'm not saying it is a negative. I'm just saying that those plays were not enough to beat the Patriots on their own. In 2007, the 6 plays before that miracle play was a comedy of errors in which Eli tried to turn the ball over on 5 of them. But, through some miracle, they still had the ball. 1st and 10: High and incomplete into double coverage. 2nd and 10: High and incomplete into double coverage. (Aikman even comments on how they were lucky to still have the ball) 3rd and 10: Drastically underthrows an easy 1st down to bring up a potential game ending 4th. 4th and 1: Jacobs makes it by inches. 1st and 10: Almost loses the ball while scrambling. 2nd and 10: Dropped uncontested interception by Assanti Samuel. At this point, Eli had a 74 passer rating and 10 points against a guy that just averaged 117 and 37 points over an entire season, and was still somehow in it. That was the MVP? I think it is very clear that Eli was not the MVP. A defensive player should have received it for shutting Brady down.

@Tom Knapp obviously ignorant Cowboys fan.Look at there stats twice as many yards and td's( Eli is 10th in yds ALL TIME) With no hof WR or anything close to what T.A. had. His consecutive games streak would of been intact, had a moron of a coach, not taking him out. He had 210 consecutive starts..Troy 165 starts all time

Aikman only threw for over 20 touchdowns in a single season one time. His career stats were 32,942 yards, 165 touchdowns, 141 interceptions, a completion percentage of 61.5 and a QB rating of 81.6.

@@urmommazhouse Eli is top 10? I guess playing 16 years has nothing to do with that when the average QB only plays 4 years? I just looked up where he stands on yards/attempt and TD %, and it isn't pretty. All time at the time of his retirement, Eli's TD percentage is 70th. His yards/attempt doesn't even show up on a list of the top 80. His passer rating is 46th. When Troy retired, his passer rating was 18th all time, completion percentage 4th, yards/attempt was 62nd. and TD percentage didn't show up either. They had the same interception percentage, but Troy played in a much more brutal, less passer friendly league than Eli did. The bottom line is that Eli has top 10 stats because he compiled them over 16 years. Even 16 years of below average attempts add up. And he didn't have top level receivers because he couldn't elevate anyone. Colin Cowherd debated Eli's HoF eligibility. When Eli was throwing to OBJ, Eli's passer rating was 111. When throwing to everyone else it was 79. Eli didn't make great players, he needed them. Just like how Dak does. If Dak loses his top receiver or RB, he goes right down the drain.
