How Good Was Carey Price Actually?

Спорт

This video is about Montreal Canadiens legendary goaltender Carey Price. The British Columbian native accomplished quite a bit in his hockey career including winning a Vezina Trophy, a Hart Trophy, a Ted Lindsay, a World Juniors gold, an Olympic gold, World Cup gold, and went on many long playoff runs including all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2021 with Montreal. Price was one of the best goalies of his generation and will be remembered by many fans for just how good he was during the best years of his career.

He only played with one 80 point scorer his entire career and that was in his rookie year with kovalev. I’m not a habs fan and price isn’t even my favourite goalie but what this guy did for that team makes him the goat in my book

I'm a Habs fan and I think you're on point. He took mediocre teams and brought them to playoffs and beyond when they had no business being there otherwise. I'm a bit disappointed that "my" Habs couldn't give him the Stanley Cup I think he deserved, always him Carey-ing the team. He deserved better.

As a goalie myself, Price is more than a good goalie. He's the best of the past 15 years and I don't even wanna hear about Flower, Lundqvist, Vasy... His near perfection technique changed the present goaltending forever. I never hear anyone who was looking at Flower or Lundqvist to get better. We (the goalie) were always looking at Carey to learn. Despite beeing an absolute magnificent legend of a goalie, he was and still a model for the present goalies. Stats doesn't matter cause the habs suck (i'm a habs fan). It's not hasard if he was the #1 goalie for team canada in front of prime Luongo, Holtby, Crawford and Fleury, it's because he was better than them. Stanley cup or not I don't care, Carey is a top-5 all time.

I watched every game of Carey Price in his prime, which was roughly between 2012 and 2015, encompassing his gold medal run at the 2014 Olympics. In his prime, Price was a beast, single-handedly winning lobsided games that Montreal had no business winning. I had never seen a goalie who had shear technical abilities as well as athleticism. The thing is, that he never translated his heroics into a Stanley Cup, norfid he particularly distinguish himself during the playoffs. It's not that he played poorly during the yes, it's just that he didn't bring his game to another level. The thing is that Montreal has a legacy of. Goalies who have had spectacular playoff runs carrying the entire team on their back, that otherwise has no business winning. Dryden in 1971, Patrick Roy in 86 and 93, to a lesser Steve Penny in 1985 and jaroslav halak in 2010. It's true that he played well in the lockout playoff season, but I kind of place that in another category entirely since there for a lot of unusual circumstances. In the end, he never brought home a cop or excelled in the playoffs the way fans had hoped, and the last few years of his career were marrred by injury, drug rehab and just overall state of uncertainty while at the same time commanding the largest salary on the team despite not playing at all-- a very bittersweet end. To me, he has more in common with someone like Robert Luongo than Patrick Roy.

As someone who saw Dryden and then Roy and the Hart winning Theodore, I can say that he was in the same class with Roy and Theodore. To me, he was the last of the great non-clone goalies of today who are positional only and don't make half as many athletic saves as the previous generations did. Sadly, he came along after the Canadiens ownership had changed and they lost the things that made them special and able to contend regularly. For a ten year period, right in the middle of his career, Montreal ranked DEAD LAST in drafted players making it to the NHL. That was one of the things that made them the envy of every other team, they drafted and developed better than anyone. It's such a shame that they couldn't put a half decent team in front of him for even one year.

I played goalie at a relatively high level for 12 years. I've seen all types, ive studied the greats - Carey Price is the most talented goalie of all time, imo. He's mechanically clean as it gets, awareness is off the charts, and he has that Hasek instinct to make the impossible saves. The peak didn't last forever, but if you factor in the scoring environment - i believe he posted the only season better than Haseks '99 season.

Always injury here and there slowing him down, but you saw at the olympics, with a good team in front of him, he was almost unbeatable. I’ll remember him for almost never allowing a bad goal, it was really rare. One of the only way to beat him was to screen him, but if not, good luck. There’s a reason why players always voted him as the best goalie. Man such a shame with the teams he had, he represents his name relly well. The level of confidence he gave to his team was unmatched, the argument « never eon a cup » is so surface level in my opinion, watch him play au you’ll now. Put him with a above average team and yeah he wins a few.

Price means the absolute world to me both as a player and human being. Guy just dominated the 2010s like it was nothing. He was one of the biggest reasons why the 2010s was such a low scoring decade and how that made the game fun and hardcore. He never had a true superstar forward on his team that was a point per game or higher. He carried every team he had single handedly especially that unexpecting run to the final in 2021 with the habs being an 8th seed and all. He, Lundqvist and Luongo are prolly the best goalies to ever play not just in their generation but all time that didn't get their names on the cup. Ofc not everyone can win cups but at least 3 of those guys at least got to go to 1 cup final (Luongo in 2011, Lundqvist in 2014 and Price in 2021) so at least they got to experience that to see what it was like. Plus, Price got a 2014 gold medal and the vezina, jennings, ted lindsay and hart trophies in 2015 and is the winningest goalie in canadiens history so that certainly is good enough in my book for a goat!!! He also was the one who finally got me to break the stigma in dealing with a depression case of my own in the fall of 2021. From April 2020-October 2022, I had a big case of depression, anxiety, insomnia and more. It started in April 2020 but it wasn't actually that bad at first. It wasn't until January 2021 when it really got bad and I started getting desperate and going insane and it wasn't until November 2021 when I finally came public about it. I obviously could've came forward in 2020 but I wasn't sure how my superiors were going to take it since i had never dealt with that before until then but better late than never. Him revealing his own mental issues in October 2021 was what gave me the courage to break silence as well. It takes a shit ton of courage to do such a thing and who knows if I would've done it when i did or at all if it hadn't been for him. Some people say that he isn't tough or is too mentally weak or say stuff like real men don't believe in mental health issues and it sickens me. Money isn't everything. We are all human beings who can get mental challenges at anytime and revealing yourself and admitting you have a problem is by far the strongest thing a human can do. I am not ashamed of my own at all and I know he isn't either. Ever since November 2022, things for me personally have recovered pretty decently although i get some hurdles here and there. I just hope I get a chance to meet him in the future somehow so I can say thank you not just for all the joy he provided me on the ice but also giving me the strength I needed to take my mental health as seriously as possible!

Price had a lot of hype around him. He delivered on the hype with an incredible rookie year. He wasn't as good in his 2nd season in 2008-2009 and some fans were already turning on him. He wasn't having a bad season but he was either incredible or let in soft goals. The 2009 playoffs is when a lot of fans turned on him. He wasn't good and the fans let him hear it giving him the bronx cheer. in 2009-2010, Price was getting the most hate he ever had in his career. He didn't have a great season and many fans thought he was never going to become a number 1 goalie. The 2010 playoffs is when the Price hate was at his worst. Many habs fans wanted Price to get traded since Halak played like a god in the playoffs. Halak got traded instead and many fans were furious. 2010-2011 is the season Carey Price became Carey Price. He was incredible and should've won the Vezina that year. This is the year all the Price haters were finally put to rest. The rest is history.

I wanted Kopitar, and I still wish it was Kopitar, no offense to Price. I think if Price wasn't dealing with stuff he could've been even better. As awesome as he was, IMO (outside of international play) he'd be awesome in the playoffs but hit a wall before closing the deal. Got out goaltended in some big games. IMHO.
