Alex English has to be one of the most underappreciated Hall of Famers in NBA history. The media largely overlooked him because he played in Denver, and he rarely tooted his own horn, but for almost the entire 80s his floor for scoring every night was 20 points a game. He was silky smooth, all business, incredibly consistent, and I consider him the greatest Nugget in team history.

For a number of years when Alex English was teamed with Kiki Vandeweghe and Dan Issel they were impossible to stop. Alex was favorite player, ever!! My saddest sports memory was when the Nuggets took on the Lakers in the '85 WC Championship, and I think had a decent shot at an upset... but Alex broke his thumb, and the Nugs were dead in the water (Lever and Natt were banged up, too). If I recall, that year the Nuggets were the only team during the 80s to win the season series against both the Lakers and Celtics in the same year. If you ever got to attend a Nuggets game at McNichols Arena in those days, you probably got to hear Coach Doug Moe bellowing over the crowd noise when the Nuggets were in their half court offense: "Take him, Alex!!" [yeah, I'm from Denver]

English was the Iceman's one true successor back in the 80s, except he lacked the latter's colorful personality (lol). Most prolific scorer of that decade and had he been a full-time starter from Day-1, could've very well joined the 30,000-point club at the end of his career. Mid-range game was elite-level, too. Damn shame the Nuggets franchise never really appreciated him during his prime and wound up tossing him aside as an afterthought around the turn of the 90s when he FINALLY began to "slow down". Oh, and he was probably the most durable swingman of his era. Amazing considering he didn't become a premier scorer until he was approaching his 30s... O_O

Yep, I know I late to the party, but I am going to comment anyway. I believe that Alex did have that team that could have won a championship. People often forget that 84-85 team that started English, Natt, Lever, Dunn, and Cooper, with 6th man Issel. The series was split 1-1 with the Nuggets blowing out the Lakers in the Forum in game 2. Injuries struck and English broke his hand on one of Abdul-Jabbar's elbows. One of the greatest players I have had the pleasure of seeing live, but even a nicer man off the court. It really fits that he is a published poet because his game was pure poetry in motion.

Just imagine if Alex English and Bernard King had played with Larry Bird on the Celtics. They would have frustrated so many players. As I said, they all looked stoppable, but no one could stop them, and nothing frustrates athletic players more than a lesser athlete beating them. New-school players who fit this mold are James Harden and Steph Curry. Although Curry has good athleticism he doesn't rely on it. Bernard King beat people with his repertoire; no player in NBA history had as many moves as he had. He was also fundamentally sound and underrated as a passer, especially out of the post. Before his knee injury, he was also an above-average NBA athlete! He was incredibly strong...like Moses Malone strong, an aspect of his physicality that often goes undiscussed. Watch him in the low post. His nose for the basket was unmatched, as he could score in traffic like nobody's business. King is the best argument against players imitating Michael Jordan if they want to be scorers because he proved that athletic ability wasn't necessary in order to dominate. There was no defensive answer for him. Larry Bird was a fundamentally sound uncanny shorter who could also pass and had deceptive hand-quickness. He had great hand-eye coordination and impeccable footwork. All basketball players should study Bird. Bird was also a great defender with those great hands, which also made him an uncanny rebounder. One of the toughest, smartest NBA players ever. If Larry Bird had ever wanted to just be a shooter, he would still have been extremely dangerous. Even if he could not score, he would have been dangerous because of his genius-level intelligence on the defensive end. For these reasons and others, he was almost unstoppable. Alex English was exceptionally smooth, fundamentally sound, and very decisive about what he wanted to do with the ball. His arms were long, so he had a high release point, which was why he looked stoppable but wasn't. His only weakness was that he couldn't guard a fence. When I first saw Ben "Benji" Wilson, he reminded me of Alex English and George Gervin. English's repertoire of moves was underrated, as he had plenty of them and could score almost at will. He was often seen beating more athletic players because he always knew exactly what he was going to do with the ball. The sad part is that his defenders often knew, as well; they just couldn't do anything about it!

Seems to have been a very consistent and nice player, a better version of Joe Johnson maybe for the 00s (and I'm sure Joe Johnson is going to be forgotten as well in a few years). One small thing bothers me though: when you compare stats, take in account the pace of the eras. Kobe's numbers come in an era with a much slower pace, especially compared to the Nuggets who went running and gunning.

Alex English (A.E.), Bernard King, and Larry Bird were arguably the greatest pure scorers in NBA history. English was a poor man's George Gervin. Late Chicago prep basketball phenom Ben "Benji" Wilson was often compared to Bernard King and George Gervin, but I thought he looked more like A.E. Notice that Bird, King, and English had one thing in common: they looked stoppable because they didn't rely on athleticism to beat teams. They were all extremely difficult to guard, let alone contain or stop.

I think it is a bit stupid to do that because some players will be randomly overlooked. Better to do a top 100 list and leave it at that. He is in and so is Klay and Dwight etc..

The new list was based on playoff success, rings, even college national titles. Melo and English similar numbers, same amount of first round playoff exits, but Melo made list still because he has a college title and playing in New York helps

I'm not sure he would have been a title Contender or champion on a better team. If he was on a better team he probably would have been coach to be more defensive-minded and probably would have scored less due to exerting more energy on the defensive end. He was a fine player and an Unstoppable score. He's definitely underrated and doesn't get talked about very much.
