What do you think of Sableye?

I like it

It's cool, but a bit underwhelming. I used one in my first playthrough of Emerald (and first finished playthrough) and it was fine for about half of the game, but it started falling behind later on. It was especially dissapointing in the Elite Four. I distinctily remember it dealing surprisingly low damage with Shadow Balls.

Fun gimmick, but not enough of an asset. Having no weaknesses and three common inmunities is neat, but the lack of resistances sting, considering it is almost always going to be outsped and its bulk isn't fantastic. Can be good for gaining back momentum if you can time your predictions right, but relying on it to fight outside of a few special occassions is like asking a wall to stop bouncing back a tennis ball.

@@erminrad1 Nice! Although it's more yellow than green (only the gem is green). ^^
I love the design of sableye. I feel like it's one of those oddballs that got ignored when the games came out, but has gotten more and more attention over the years.

I've always liked it. It's a cute gem goblin.
Sableye was one of those designs I fell in love with at first sight! Just a spooky little creecher in a cave with an adorable, oversized head & sparkly gem eyes! Not having any weaknesses + three immunities made it super beginner friendly! Night shade gave it consistent, reliable damage through the early to mid game! And tools like fake out & confuse ray made it feel super rewarding to use! To this day, it's one of my favorites!
I swear that watching your videos is one of the things that make my fridays happier

@@grumpygengar22 I was convinced Nosepass was a graveler evo that needed kings rock to trade evolve.
When I first played Sapphire I had no ideas about stabs, the typing determining physical/special, etc. but I still developed an affection for my little jewel gremlin. It was my flasher.

Awesome content and great points. However don't sleep on Foresight on Brawly's Machop.
You could taunt setup sweepers like Winona's Altaria.

Great vid, love sableye! Actually in granite cave you can repel trick on bf2 with a level 12 mon to guarantee either a sableye or a aron so not all hope is lost lol

Happy to see another 3rd gen video. (I'm a 3rd genner😅)
You could do a video about new mauville encounters voltorb and magnemite. You catch them before the flying gym, already equipped with thunderbolt tm, and with lots of water routes ahead of younot to mention wallace and juan. Completely underrated mons

Sableye is so cool! I remember always wanting to use one
I've tried a gameplay with a Sableye in my main team, and it's not bad actually. That's because: - typing ghost/dark has no weaknesses and it's immune to 3 types - it can solo 3 gym leaders and 1 elite four ALONE, with proper moves and high level - it's a good alternative to the other 2 regional ghosts all around - I personally like the design a lot Only true downsight are his stats, pretty mediocre, and movepool is a bit limited. Still, it works very good in early game and as a utility member in the team

What moves and EVs does your Sableye have?
Liking this channel thus far. Out of curiosity, any opinions on the best generation when it comes to grinding/training? I assume each generation/game has their own level of annoyances but I would think by now there's an agreed upon game or generation that makes grinding/training very tolerable or even fun.

Out of the generations that I'm most familiar with, Gen 5 seems to be the best simply because the level curve is very smooth. As a pokemon black or white playthrough goes on, the wild Pokemon are very appropriately leveled for the area of the game where you catch them. And that just makes training easier as well. Wild Audino in shaking grass also helps too haha
I wasn’t doing a nuzlock but I found one with a good nature in my first encounter in granite cave and it was super satisfying using him on brawly at level 13 lol
5:47 I looked it up on Bulbapedia and... wow, it didn't allow you to ignore your opponent's evasion until Gen 6?! I thought they added that in Gen 4! 10:28 That hurt to watch q_q

Maybe he thought that because of faint attack since that ignores accuracy checks

Good catch
Given your previous comments on Sableye in your various Hoenn videos, I'm going to assume pretty good. You certainly seem impressed with the ghost gremlin each time you've used them. 1:23 - Only a 10% catch rate... meanwhile I'm having flashbacks to the hours I spent to obtain a 1% find Dunsparce in Johto's Dark Cave. An that 10% catch rate does ensure you've a Pokémon that can deal with the nearby gym, unlike the Ruby counterpart of Mawile (whom I adore but unfortunately was awful in it's debut). 3:04- An okay physical defence also means Sableye can take a blow from the physical Ground/Flying/Bug/Rock/Ghost and Steel attacks. Low HP and Speed means it's not exactly great for a switch-in/follow-up manoeuvre though. 4:14 - The stats of Sableye are indeed awful, not spread well enough in any one area. I always assumed it was a fast Pokémon with low defences being balanced by it's no weakness typing but then my brother used one and reported to me just how slow the dark ghost was. 7:41 - The only downside I can see from Sableye's level up move-set is how long it takes to learn Confuse Ray, when it's clearly one of this Pokémon most optimal strategies. For TM's, I'm impressed by the sheer diversity Sableye has, particularly on the physical attack front that favour's it 75 base Attack stat. 9:53 - Love the broom sweeping Sableye edit here.
I love his design I just gave him calm mind and special ev training him to try and sweep with shadow ball
When I was a wee vampire kitty, Sableye was my favorite pokémon for quite a while. At first it was just because of how badass it looks, then I eventually found out that it had no weaknesses. I never really thought about stats as a kid, so his low stats never bothered me. I destroyed the entire base game with Amythest the Sableye as my ace Then I got to the battle frontier Though actually by that point, Banette had become my favorite, and would stay my favorite
Running my Sableye with attract, toxic, confuse ray and protect. He's the ultimate annoyance haha

Please cover whismur and why is it so bad. It appears to have a lot of potential with three evolutions, but in reality, I have never managed to keep it alive until exploud. In fact, it hardly ever get past Watson.

I plan on forcing myself to use one for an entire playthrough someday. So after that I'll probably make the video on the little guy.
Pretty sure Keen Eye only works against accuracy debuffs, not evasion buffs. I know, it SHOULD work that way, but Gamefreak is a cruel mistress.

Yeah I've tried looking it up and I can't find it confirmed or denied anywhere. But you could be right
So I just started playing Emerald for the first time a couple days ago and I encountered Sableye pretty early on in Granite cave. I used the cave to grind levels for my pokemon so I could be Brawly and let me tell you Sableye and Aron were the most common. I encountered him right away and caught him with a great ball. He nearly wiped out my team on first go but has been a worthy addition to my team. Being able to take opponents level worth of health has been really helpful. Even when catching lower level pokemon he is great at weakening a pokemon and then catching them right after.
The key thing that you forgot in these types of videos is what moves, EVs, etc would you used with the topic Pokémon. I’d like to know what you believe is the most suitable moves for it.
Sableye is my favorite gen 3 pokemon and one of my favorite pokemon overall. Really wish it got prankster as an initial ability. I spent so long hunting for one in raids in violet for my hoenn only run lol. Also loved mega sableye in oras
I haven't checked the comments, so apologies if it's already been answered; outside of battle effects only start working from Emerald onwards.

In general do you think it's worth repeling down for a chance of Sableye in Granite Cave, or is it better to just get first encounter on first floor?
@owenaspinall2046

I generally repel with a level 10 pokemon for a Makuhita on the first floor. It's the only fighting type you can guarantee if you didn't take Torchic, and is quite bulky as well.
@grumpygengar22

Yeah I would say the encounters on the first floor are just better overall. Granite Cave is packed with good pokemon.
I actually like sableye, but it’s just so tedious to use in emerald, where the best stab for a long time is night shade.

I always liked these guys. I don’t care if its stats are trash. It’s a cool mon.
What EV training should Sableye invest in?
0:20 Grumpy Gengar:Smiles Me:O__0?! Guess grumpy Gengar is a substitute >_>
The little gremlin is getting the recognition it deserves. Lets gooooooo!
I know I'm a bit late, but personally, I don't think Sableye is that good, as the main thing that lets it down is it's low stats across the board, so I personally wouldn't be surprised if it begins to fall off around the midgame or so. And while this video did talk about being able to have it contribute by pivoting in at the right moment, I feel that's only really deserving of praise if you practice it, and makes it a bit harder to use, as I personally would give a Pokemon a better rating if it's easy to get the most out of it, as this lets more players succeed with it regardless of skill level. That said, this last point, I feel, is especially important in challenge runs, as it lets a new player get eased into it more effectively. Furthermore, I really think that it making the Brawly fight free (which I view as it's biggest selling point outside of Norman) is severely undercut when you consider that Taillow is not only available sooner and more easily obtainable without a good amount of luck, but it arguably makes the fight even more free because with wing attack it pretty much one-shots THE WHOLE ENTIRE GYM. For these reasons, I would bump it's grade down to a C, and given how many people in the comment section have expressed some frustration with it, I can't claim it to be that good unless you really know what you're doing
@grumpygengar22

Yeah you're probably right. I'm a little biased I suppose haha, but everything you're saying is true.

I think it's a bit disingenous to judge Sableye based on how well a trainer can play with him or not. A Pokémon needs to be primarily judged for its potential, not what happens in practice. If I told I don't give any ground moves to my Mudkip line you wouldn't discredit Mudkip as the best Pokémon to use in Hoenn playthroughs just because of my lack of skill. This even happens in the example you provided. Not every Taillow can sweep Brawly with Wing Attack from the get-go (specially if you have bad luck with the IV's/nature), and in return, Taillow is very frail and susceptible to being killed back by Makuhita's Vital Throw. However, I'm pretty sure even the worst Taillow can sweep Brawly IF you active Guts preemptively. But that's also a skill check, and not every single trainer is going to attempt or even remember to pre-Poison Taillow before Brawly. In contrast, every single Sableye will sweep Brawly because he simply can't touch it. Sableye is most definitely the best encounter to defeat Brawly safely. I honestly think Sableye is a very honest Pokémon. Horrible stats, no evolution, plain movepool. What you see is what you get. You literally NEED to leverage the power of its immunities, otherwise he's near useless. But being the only Pokémon to provide immunities against Brawly and Norman, two rather stressful fights in Hoenn (specially the second one) is just amazing. Even against Tate&Liza, once Claydol and Solrock are dealt with, Sableye + one of the many other dark types in Hoenn = Checkmate. But most importantly, the thing we are all forgetting about this little rascal of a Pokémon, is that it allows us to spare our most valuable encounters in these very powerful boss fights for the moments in late game where Sableye just can't operate. Sure, it is weak, but if it means saving the ass of my Swellow, Marshtomp, Breloom, Pelipper, etc... you can bet Sableye is useful.
How would you do Sableye’s EV spread?
@grumpygengar22
Жыл бұрын
HP and Special Defense usually. A lot of the physical threats often can't actually deal damage to Sableye so I tend to ignore Defense.
