How Girls und Panzer is BETTER than Fury

Ойындар

Been tossing this video idea around in my head for awhile and finally decided to try to explain my opinion on this. Obviously this could be a VERY controversial video but please remember this is my opinion and I BY NO MEANS think Fury is a bad movie.

To answer a few questions I'm sure quite a few people will ask before the fill the comments: 1) The background footage is from Girls und Panzer Dream Tank Match 2) I'm not an Uber fan of GuP I just appreciate what it does for the Tank community 3) The Cone standing in the corner is to hopefully prevent the automatic ID system to detect the small clips I used for reference since it IS fair use for this purpose but could still get flagged (fingers crossed) Hopefully you guys enjoy this video and if you want to suggest movies for me to potentially make a video like this about in the future comment them below.

I think the Russian film, T-34 shows that dynamic between the different crews in a few of the scenes, such as the opening tank battle and the latter one. Although the Germans aren’t always getting their forefront distinction, they show it nonetheless. Also a great film for CGI stuff as well. Looks really damn good

I'm majoring as a history teacher (hoping to have my diploma next year) and I have been teaching high school kids and even some older ones for the last three years during internships. The hardest part is really to make it interesting for them. It doesn't take long for kids to question you why they are learning history and about dead people, like it doesn't matter to them. One of the best moments I had was when I was teaching a class about the 2nd World War and I had brought a few items along to show them. The boys of course were interested in my M1905 bayonet (the long boi) that I brought with me, because it's a weapon. However before that class I came with the idea to buy a can of Fanta from the vending machine in the school. This was the item they were most interested in. Of course I asked them what they thought Fanta had to do with World War II. They partially got it right by saying it was something that existed during World War II and was drunken by soldiers. When I told them the story of how and why it was invented by Nazi-Germany, they got hooked into the story. It really shows that there is a certain connection you need to make between history and the current day, in this case a historical and current day every day object. The best part came when at the end of class one student asked if he could have the can of Fanta. He asked it nicely so I gave it to him. While I was cleaning up the desk after class and students left the classroom I suddenly heard: "I GOT A CAN OF NAZI SODA!" From the hallway. It had me laughing and told me I did a good job.

It was the Tiger II that had such problems, *and you DO learn in GuP that the broken steel roadwheel can be rolled uphill by a single ponytailed schoolgirl at running speed so they can get it repaired in five minutes.* ;-) What you learn about the Tiger I is that *it could traverse its turret 120 deegres in three seconds.* Also, we learn that *Char B1 can sustain (not just "reach") 20 Km/h off road.* The moar you know.

One of the things not mentioned related to the accuracy of the tanks, probably due to Cone not being a megafan of GuP, is that Actas, the animation studio, worked with wargaming to produce the models. This is most apparent in der Film's credits, where wargaming has their own section of people.

As a tanker, I was so excited when Fury came out. I was hoping for a movie the showed the struggles and comraderie of a tank crew. While it did that to an extent, I felt it spent far too much energy being gritty and edgy, especially with that shitty breakfast scene. GuP on the other hand does a phenomenal job of showing this. You get a feeling that the not only are the individual crews a family, but the entire team is a family similar to a real tank platoon or company (at least the good ones). That's probably why I enjoy GuP so much. The history nerdism, and the feel good nature that reminds me of the good ol days.

I actually got into tanks because of GuP. I can attest to what you’ve said: I knew basically nothing about tanks other than that the Tiger, Sherman, and T-34 existed. As a result of making the specific machinery stand out (many films use tanks merely as a plot device for the characters instead of as a draw of their own), I became interested in the tanks they used rather than just the story they’re used to tell. And I’ve become really into these tanks since watching the show. Keep up the good work!

honestly I was incredibly impressed with the accuracy of the show. It's not the technical accuracies like the "tank drifting" that matter, it's the spirit of it. It's the fact that they play to the historic strengths and weaknesses of the tanks, such as the Churchill's heavy armour or the KV-2s tendency to tip over on a slope, and throughout their stories constantly pepper in tidbits about what life was really like for tankers. Also the research and clear love for the topic that goes into it. Like, if they need a big boss enemy, they won't just make something up, they'll find a REAL tank that was rare or experimental, and if they need to, say, fill a characters room or a cafe with tank memorabilia, they'll go out of their way to make sure that everything relates to something real, like a copy of a real life Tamiya model kit, or a specific type of tank shell

The thing with GuP is that most of the inaccuracies are clearly intentional choices, not dumb mistakes or pandering or laziness. The people who made the show clearly love tanks, and did their homework. The show is full of subtle details that you'd never notice if you aren't already well informed about the machines involved, but will make you smile when you do spot them. It's like the difference between a skilled musician who purposefully messes around with the music he's playing to have fun, vs an unskilled amateur who plays it wrong because he doesn't know any better. To name just one trivial example: Late in the series, the four girls of the school's automotive club who have been maintaining the tanks until now, join the team to operate the Porsche Tiger prototype, which was a tank well known for its many mechanical issues. At one point, the engine breaks down during during a match. The crew act mildly annoyed rather than surprised, and one girl calmly climbs out and starts fixing the engine, while the tank is still driving. It's completely silly and ridiculous, but on the other hand, the Porsche Tiger *did* have 2 engines with electric drive, so, at least in principal, it really could drive on one engine. Of course, fixing an engine on a moving tank while it's hot from running still silly, but the scene calls out a cool and obscure technical detail in a way that's both humorous and exciting, but it doesn't shove your face in it. It's just a few seconds with no-one calling attention to why they can do that, so you'll only appreciate it later when you get curious and read about the Porsche Tiger (or while watching if you're a real tank nerd).

  • @notfeedynotlazy

    @notfeedynotlazy

Or the amusing bit of trivia that in WWII tanks WERE driven over other tanks, both intentionally and accidentally, which is hilariously referenced on the Maus scene (and with a tank whose chasis was later used for a tank towing vehicle, for added amusement value), facts that one discovers when investigating whether the scene is TOTALLY fictional or has at least some kind of plausibility, even if the scene is greatly exagerated for fun. I even remember someone making the calculation that the Hetzer's chasis would REALLY stand that weight without structural failure - but its suspension would not, which is EXACTLY what the series depicts. Also, I've watched footage of WWII-era tanks _actually drifting over cobbled streets_ (a captured T-26 pulling a 180 for show at the victory parade of the winning side of the Spanish Civil War). Have you noticed that ALL the tank drifting scenes (but the ones of the hilariously improved Porshe Tiger - those are done for laughs) happen over paved surfaces? Yes I knew you noticed. They did. But you need to have watched that rare footage or you'll believe it's impossible.

Shiro Hamaguchi put a lot of effort into making the songs feel full as possible, and even used some obscure songs from Italy and Japan (le fiamme nere, and March of Snow) which is nice to hear. I am now 14 and still go to air shows and am finally going to go to tankfest this year (it was cancelled last year.) Learning about ww2 history has been a big part of my life

I know many love tanks, it's a strange like or obsession that I notice just happens to come out in people involved with tanks or an interest in them. like Hana Isuzu with her flower arranging tank vase, thay can be so peaceful. I have never felt that before Girls und panzer. I think tanks might achually bring about not a love for war, but feeling of security and perhaps peace.

The vehicles are all real and accurate, the tactics are at least based off of what the original factions used, was all-around entertaining without being WoT-level inaccurate. Bachelor in History going on Master here, most other serious history students I know and even young Historians who are actively starting in the field all got their love of history from media. Unironically, watching Girls und Panzer and playing World of Tanks gave me my entry into history, along with other games that came out later. I don't even particularly watch anime anymore, but I still love Girls und Panzer for the fact that while it may not be accurate to anything, it really did serve as an entryway into researching armored vehicles and later the War itself, and now I work for a prominent museum as a Holocaust researcher because I had gotten into the field with passion from a young age.

most touching moment for me was episode 10. it was the night before the finals. some of the girls were watching and crying over kelly's heroes (starring clint eastwood). a movie i repeatedly watched with my dad, a war movies enthusiast (i got it from him) who introduced me to the longest day, a bridge too far, battle of the bulge, operation daybreak, etc. he passed away in 2004. this anime series is not only amazing, it also reminds me of my younger, happier days watching war movies with him. 😪

Girls und panzer is honestly one of the driving factors the got me so into tanks in the first place. Now I’d always had loved these things even as a kid, but only knew stand outs like the tiger and t34. It wasn’t until my teenage years that I found girls und panzer mentioned online, before checking it out for myself, and I agree the plot is a little to be desired. But the battles! Oh the battles are what we are all really there for! It helped drive a spark in my curiosity to learn more about the topic, and now tanks are one my favorite topics of the Second World War! So needless to say o really enjoyed this video haha, though the title is a bit click bait, but eh we’re all used to that by now, either way great video! really made me reminisce about when I first found out about tanks and gup!

Not only do I love this anime, I read the manga a little bit as well, I found out about it during school when I stumbled upon a video called "How to defeat a Maus." And it sparked my love for anime, though at the time I didn't know it was something you would be made fun for liking. I get made fun of for liking tanks as well... But regardless, seeing the Maus in action was a cool scene. Also can we just mention how amazing the OST's for every school is?

I also feel that GuP went a step further with the crews. The "enemy" crews typically were satirical form of their given nation (British being pompous, Russian using raw numbers and fighting in the snow...). But, the main cast crew felt like a mix of actual personalities you would find in a fighting unit (maybe not all in one tank, but you get the idea). The charismatic TC, the driver that sleeps half the time, the hyped up gunner/loader. I think everyone knew "that one guy" who fits one of the characters from the main school cast.
