How Germans settled in Eastern Europe

After the breakup of the Frankish Empire, the realm's two halves were completely separated, with their own languages and customs. The creation of the Holy Roman Empire, along with the population boom in the west, created ideal conditions for increased migration to the east, where sparsely populated, fertile lands, and newly rising Christian kingdoms badly needed new techniques and knowledge. At the same time, pagan tribes could be conquered, which was always a great incentive. The Ostsiedlung, the German settling of eastern territories thus began, lasting several centuries.

Thank you, always look forward to your excellent videos. I often wonder if there is any such thing as a pure blooded Magyar any more. I know in my owns case, though my immediate ancestors all were proud Hungarians, go back far enough and most were of ethnic German origin from Austria, the Saarland, Luxembourg and even northern France arriving in Hungary in the 1700s. I suspect this is quite common. Kind regards from Sydney.

Thank you for the kind words! If there was a pure blodded Magyar, he/she would not look like us :) The mixing with Germans, Italians, Slavs, etc took care of that, not to mention the 50% population loss to the Mongol invasion, and then the huge losses due to the Ottoman wars and occupation.
