How Gangster Rap Took Back Control of Hip Hop

-------
One of the best things about hip-hop is that it’s always evolving. And just when you think that the genre has fallen off, something will come along and rock the boat. From chart positions to geographical dominance, everything is up for grabs. For example, if you’d have told an old school hip-hop head that one day, the genre would be run by colorful dreadheaded mumble rappers, they’d say you were crazy.
Likewise, if you’d have told someone during the initial 90’s boom of gangsta rap or during 50 Cent and G Unit’s peak that one day, bars about the streets would become outdated for a period, it’d be hard to imagine.
As during those eras, your ability to be verified by the streets was mandatory for any degree of success beyond the underground.
Ever since Schooly D and NWA brought their unfiltered realities to the rap game, the conduct of the streets have continued to be a force in the culture. And while it has birthed plenty of megastars and timeless albums, it has had its drawbacks. Not only due to street politics encroaching into hip-hop and claiming rapper’s lives, but due to its popularity overshadowing every other approach to the game.

    IMO Because gangster/drill rappers became more open about love/pain and other vulnerable feelings that listeners relate to. SoundCloud rappers had a huge wave because they were touching on depression and other sensitive topics that gangsta rappers wouldn’t. But gangsta rappers evolved and now you see Lil Durk and NBA Youngboy singing about love, pain and shit on their music. And they’re doing it without the corny rainbow hair and all that none sense, so it’s clear to see why they’re back on topic.

    To put it simply, I don't think you can have too many "intelligent" or "open- minded" artists. I don't think the industry wants a bunch of nas' or J.Cole's running the industry. A few are okay but not the majority. They want the violence,the lean, the drugs,the killing. Music is so powerful and if you have the genre run by the likes of nas' and Jay-z type minded artists speaking wealth and brand building, you literally change the trajectory of an entire group of people. You change clubs, you change streets, you change leadership, you change an entire movement, And why would the white ran hip hop industry want that when it could dethrone them as executives and beyond and restore my people to the top and retake what they have created.

    Alright, let me add to what you just said. The industry only allows a certain amount of artist "on top" at a time. When they decide to, you has a rapper, or rap group, will "fall off". This is what happened to wu tang after the 90's, all of a sudden, their beats got wack. Big pun dies, big L dies, pac dies, biggie dies, mase retires, aaliyah dies, left eye dies, eazy e dies. The list goes on. The industry decides this stuff. And when they want a rapper or group out of the limelight, they WILL do it. They only want a few "conscious" rappers in the mainstream. They won't allow too many. The rest stay underground. Rigged system. Rigged charts

    i personally think the reason is cause humans evolved from creatures who were always on alert of the surrondings in case of danger so once they were able to get familar and comfortable with their surrondings they relaxed so when something new comes out it maybe a subconscious thing to dislike it at first due to it distrubing the surrondings they just got comfortable with and in turn reinstating that fear of the unknown just a theory tho

    Conscious rap can take control again, if the music is creative. Like J Cole and Kendrick. They are two of the biggest rappers right now, both make conscious music but it’s creative and doesn’t talk down to their audience like alot of conscious rap unfortunatly does. All rap is great depending in the time and place. If I’m at the club or with the girls, I don’t wanna hear EarthGang, play something ratchet to have fun to. Real talk: rap was on the verge of becoming a joke in 89-91. There was an invasion of European rappers making techno dance music with it. Rap City was playing C&C Music Factory, I Got The Power by Snap n Technotronic all the time. A lot of times Rap City looked like a Madonna video. May sound crazy but gangsta rap set the new standard in 92. It was the deadly reset that got them dancing niggas up outta here. It drew the line that said this is what rap is now n it pretty much killed all that extra shit that everybody had been doing since the 80s. Rap was finally being taken seriously. We need a deep dive on the difference between impression of 80s rap n 90s.

  • @kevinscott59

    @kevinscott59

    We definitely need a deep dive into the impression versus the reality of hip hip in the 80s and 90s because your comment definitely reeks of an impression. The reality however is that in 1989 you had the debuts of De La Soul,Naughty By Nature(New Style at the time),Special Ed,Nice & Smooth,Gang Starr,Kool G Rap,the DOC,Mac Dre,Divine Styler,Jaz(featuring Jay Z),Queen Latifah,Maestro Fresh Wes,Esham,Craig G,Chill Rob G,Antoinette,Cool C,3rd Bass,Freddie Foxxx,Stezo etc. That's all hardcore hip hop shit.Indeed there was a lot more beneath the surface than just the Hammers,Young MCs,Kwames and Kid 'N' Plays of the day. And that doesn't even compare to the shit that dropped in 1990.And I'll challenge anyone on this earth to name a single year outside perhaps 1980 and 1988 that compares to 1991 in terms of the history of commercially recorded hip hop. Gangsta rap is extremely important to hip hop and even still underappreciated in some respects.And yet if it ever set a standard I'd argue it did so in all the worst ways:by eventually making rap music formulaic,cartoonish and boring.All the while peddling Horatio Alger-style capitalist values and aspirations to the black working class.

In fact by '92,while a few gangsta rappers were still making quality music,the perception from the underground was that gangsta rap was mostly homogenized and weak at best and,at worst,had already become the preferred rap genre for a music industry establishment still trying to figure out how to market hip hop

    I feel like it’s good that it came back but now people don’t know wtf to rap about lol. There’s so many fake internet gangster rappers even in the underground talking about guns and shooting people along with taking drugs. It gets to a point where u wanna hear some better or more shit that doesn’t sound like the next rapper which I think is exactly what’s happening, everybody sounds the same in the mainstream. Not to mention how much drama they get in outside of the music shit, it’s crazy how many rappers have been shot cause they were beefing with one another.

    @@encouraginglyauthentic43 true but a lot of the sound cloud rappers music focused on instrumentals and it was music you could play at a party. Similar to how rap started off originally. played at parties in Harlem and the Bronx but then became more lyrical with acts like Rakim, Run D.M.C, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5. Sound cloud rappers had party vibes similar to rap back in 1979 but they had out of the gate costumes as well similar to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5.
