How Furniture Restorers and French Polishers use Natural Earth Pigments

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, furniture restorer and french polisher Simon Gilboy talks about the pigment colours that are used in french polishing and furniture restoration. Natural earth pigment powders and spirit colours are used to disguise a bad repair, bad inlay or non-removable mark.
Simon describes the brush he uses when colouring, how to charge it and work a colour on the palate. He also demonstrates how to build up and blend basic wood colours like walnut, teak, mahogany and rosewood.
Natural Earth Colours: Yellow Ochre, Raw and Burnt Umber, Titanium White, Red Lead, Lemon Chrome, Burnt Sienna, Orange Chrome
Spirit Colours: Oak, Black, Red
Our follow-on video 'Disguising Repairs to Antique Oak Furniture by colouring with Natural Earth Pigments' shows how these pigments are used in practice: • How To Use Natural Ear...

Lovely video. Is that also how they did those white polished doors and certain furniture back in the days? Shellac and white pigment? Or was there some other method used?

I need to colour match a sun bleached extending dining table where the 2 unused extended leaves have been stored under the table and still retain their original RoseWood colour and the 2 leaves that have been bleached are really burnt out and white. What's the best way to recolour match the entire table? Should I stain with these pigments or buy a Hard wax oil colour ready mixed from Fiddes and then finish with Gilboys Rose gold wax? Thank you for such brilliant videos

I'm extremely surprised that you don't have, or don't use a bright green (to tone down anything with too much red in it) or royal blue (likewise to kill anything that's too orange).

There are a few colours that we use that we didn't show in this video, we do in fact use bright green, blue and yellow spirit colours although we use blue very rarely. I think it s a very valid point and maybe in future videos I will demonstrate how we use them. In the majority of colouring applications green is seldom used by us. Nest time we have a particularly bright piece of mahogany i'll crack open the green. :-)
