HOW FAST is an L88 Corvette ?? ULTRA RARE 1969 L88 Corvette TAKES ON Epic GM Muscle - Drag Video

HOW FAST is an L88 ?? ULTRA RARE 1969 L88 Corvette takes on 1970 Z28, 1969 SS396, 1972 W-30 442 and 1969 Camaro ZL1
Please HIT Subscribe: / @roadtesttv @Road Test TV
A very rare 1969 L88 Corvette takes on a slew of rare GM Muscle: 1970 Z28 Camaro, 1969 Chevelle SS 396, 1972 Olds W30 442 and a 1969 Camaro ZL1.
All are very desirable and rare muscle cars, so how does other GM muscle stack up against an L88 Corvette which is powered by a solid lifter, square port 427 Cubic Inch (7 L) Chevy Big Block which was conservatively rated at 430 horsepower.
The first car to take on the L88 is a 1970 Camaro Z28, which although was quick for a small block, it's no match the L88. The Z28 is equipped with Chevrolet's potent 350 cubic inch (5.7L) / 360 horsepower solid lifter LT1.
The next car to race the L88 is a very rare 1969 Chevelle SS396 with the L78/L89 option. That means it came from the factory with the rare aluminu head option along with the solid lifter 4 bolt main, square port 396 (6.5L). The L78/L89 was conservatively rated at 375 horsepower.
The third car to race the L88 Corvette is a 1972 Olds 442 W30. The Olds is powered by a 455 cubic inch (7.5 L) oldmosbile blueprinted w30 torque monster. Since this 442 is a 1972, the horsepower rating was down to 300 because ratings changed from Gross to Net. Watch the video and you'll see this Olds W30 is make some real power.
The last car to race the L88 is a very (1 of 69) 1969 ZL1 Camaro. The ZL1 is powered by an all aluminum 427 cubic inch (7 L), solid lifter Chevy big block.
All the cars in the video are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are very limited. The only modifications permitted are minor porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. Camshafts and compression ratio have to be within a small percentage of stock specs. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
So WHO WINs? Watch the video and see what happens.

Ronnie Mantovani: You're right about that Old's coming on like a freight train, however, somethings wrong here! If the numbers given in the spec's are accurate that Old's never should have performed the way it did, take a look: The Old's 442 was rated at 300 HP and 410 lbs of torque and weighed 3700 lbs.. While the Corvette's 427 was rated at 430 HP and 450 lbs of torque.. And don't forget that these numbers for both engines are net, NOT gross which means there is actually a lot more horse power and torque that's gone unreported on both cars! The point I wanna make here is that if both cars are stock there is no way that a 442 Old's could run neck to neck with a 69' L88 427 Corvette!!!

And so many people believe these older muscle cars were "slow". Certain gems with a good tune & better, modern tires run like hell. I don't care what anyone says, 11 second passes are damned quick, even by today's standards in a factory car.

@Shawnsta 777 I think a lot of younger guys today don't realize how modern technology has taken away a lot of the violent characteristics found in the old school muscle cars & made them much more manageable during any pass quicker than 12 seconds.........especially for drivers without much experience on a drag strip. An 11 second pass in most newer cars can be smooth & rather easy........but most of the classic muscle was harder to handle on the track. Back in 2005, my younger brother had a mid-90's Chevy PU truck that was an absolute beast ( normally aspirated ) with a Dart 434 iron block stuffed with all forged & high performance parts, full race cam, aluminum AFR heads, aluminum tunnel ram, automatic, Dana rear end with Strange axles & huge Mickey Thompson slicks. During the best conditions, that truck ran mid 10's, but most times, it ran high 10's or very low 11's........the motor required race gas & the truck was downright scary. But driving any of the C7 Corvettes w/automatic transmission that can run 11's for example, is like a walk in the park.

They weren't this fast off the showroom floor back then. If you think a Cutlass rolled out of the dealership doing 115 in the 1/4 then you simply don't have experience with cars. The Chevelle in this video trapped 114 mph. I have a friend with a numbers matching 1970 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed car. It has been cleaned up but it's basically showroom stock. It went 101 mph at the local drags over and over. THAT is what these cars did from the factory. These cars are stock "appearing" with extensive machine work done to factory cylinder head and block castings, custom ground camshafts with stock lift numbers, factory rear axle castings with 4.56 gears etc. They are heavily worked by the MOST experienced hot rodders and machinists around, and made to LOOK stock.

@@Carguylogan If you're talking to me, where the hell did I ever even mention these cars are "factory stock off the showroom floor".........because I never said no such thing. Don't go trying to put words in my mouth. You DO know that back in the day, they would port the heads & give the engines a better tune, don't you? (and the new technology in tires today, is far better than the old bias ply tires, and I DID say: "with modern tires" ) Have you gone over the rules for this class of drag racing? If memory serves me correct, they can ONLY run cams & heads that were available on any specific car being raced today in these events, as factory parts that were available through the dealers back in the day on the model being raced. They are allowed to be bored .030 over I think. And they can ONLY run gearing that was also available straight from the factory. If the car was not available with 4.56 gears, you can NOT run those gears. NO aftermarket heads or power adders. NO HEADERS ALLOWED. ONLY factory heads are allowed that were available on any particular model raced. FACTORY STOCK cranks, pistons, connecting rods, etc. I believe they can use updated ignition systems.

My 1969 Corvette with a factory modified 350cu 350HP 1/8 mile motor, 13.5:1 compression and Dealer installed headers, ran a 11.91 at 107 or 109 in the 1/4. It had 6.32 rear end ( I think that is what it was ) and was built for the 1/8 mile. I had to run race gas mixed with 93 to keep it from detonating. It had a kevlar clutch and could spin the tires on take off in 4th gear. It was a freaking beast but I sold it to get a 1994 Corvette so I could daily drive it. L88 Corvettes were running mid-11's all the way back in the late 1960's, so I have no idea where that 13.56 number is coming from. That seems unbelievably slow, even stock off the showroom floor with the skinny factory bias-ply tires. With a set of headers, a competent carb tune and fat tires out back, they would absolutely run 11's all day long when they were new. There was really no other car capable of that except maybe the ZL1 Camaros, which were actually RARER than L88 Corvettes (if you add up the 1967, 1968 and 1969 L88 Corvettes). As a side note, I thought the standard rear gear for an L88 Corvette was lower than 3.36? I thought 3.55's were the standard with lower gears available as options.

@@aaronrainey788 Yes I know that 3.36's were available, but I mentioned that in my comment because I was wondering why the test vehicle that the magazine used for that run would've had 3.36's in it? I thought those magazine test vehicles were usually supplied by the manufacturer (GM, Ford, Dodge, etc), and I just found it strange that GM would've sent an L88 Corvette with 3.36 granny gears for a magazine test where they had to KNOW that an ET would've been tested. Just seems really strange to me. Maybe they cared more about making the L88 appear streetable in that test than running a super fast ET?
