Chat/Comment Guidelines:
1: Respect each other, do not intentionally cause arguments and diffuse the situation immediately.
2: Please no backseat gaming. If I need help, I will ask the chat for help. A lot of the fun for myself and the viewers is coming up with the strategies on my own and solving problems in my own unique way.
3: Listen to the streamer. If I say stop, I mean stop, and move the discussion on.
4: Please don't reference other creators' in-jokes and running gags on my stream. Just as much as I wouldn't like another creator using my lore, I would find it disrespectful to use other creators' lore.
5: Moderators' and streamer's decisions are final.
The Rules:
1: The timer starts when walking away from Professor Elm after receiving the starter Pokémon.
2: Only the Challenge Pokémon may participate in battle.
3: No items in battle, except Balls from the bag.
4: No evasion-increasing TMs, and no Rest and Sleep Talk TMs until every other option has been exhausted.
5: No intentional uses of glitches or exploits, except the Teleport glitch after the SS Aqua.
6: No Rare Candies until facing Red. Rare Candies will be used in a 3-3-4 pattern.
7: Timer may be paused for breaks in recording, but no inputs may be made when the timer is paused.
8: Save states are permitted in the overworld, but no save states may be used mid-battle.
9: If the challenge Pokémon faints, the previous save state must be reloaded and progress regained.

    Recently realized that out of all Gen 1 Pokémon, Kingler has the 2nd highest (physical) attack out of all of them, only behind dragonite. It has 130 attack, for reference dragonite only had 4 more, at 134. It’s tied with both Machamp & Flareon though, who both also have 130 attack. This actually really blew my mind because you would never think this crab Pokémon that barely anyone used had higher attack then Pokémon like Gyarados, Snorlax, Hitmonlee, & Aerodactyl. Hell, even Krabby, with its 105 attack, has the 19th highest attack in Gen 1, higher then Hitmonchan, Tauros, Kangaskhan, & tied with Aerodactyl. 🎃

    The crazy thing is how little that attack stat mattered in gen 1. Raticate deals more damage with a body slam than Kingler does. STAB is that important.

    Watching you do solo runs has inspired me to start doing my own in FireRed. I've tried doing them before (from watching other creators that do solo run challenges) but never found a proper ruleset that really stuck with me. For example, choosing a Pokemon that's only one form (base form or evolved form) and sticking with it from the beginning was something that others seemed to do most often, but I ended up not really enjoying that as much when I started doing runs. Watching you do the full evolutionary line in your main series made me realize "oh, I can just do that instead" and I've found runs much more fun that way. Also, your choice to restrict Rare Candies until Red (for me, before the Elite Four) improved the gameplay a lot for me, as that way it's never a choice to use them beforehand, which can end up being slower in the long run even if it seems faster at the time, and can really make runs inconsistent with others. The classic "attempting Red at my current level before using rare candies or changing moves" really works. I wish I could make good videos like yours & others to go with these runs, but I'm having fun just doing the runs themselves, which is the important thing. So yeah, really appreciate your runs and your ruleset as it's helped me form my own playstyle that I enjoy. :)

    Thank you for your very kind comment, Gibstack, I'm glad I could inspire you to find a way to make challenge runs a fun experience! Everyone's gonna have different rules that work for them - I bent the rules slightly in the upcoming Mr. Mime video and learnt some moves in between Blue and Red, and it just didn't feel right. It saved time, but it wasn't in-keeping with the spirit of the runs. The beauty of doing your own runs is that you can chop and change the rules as much as you like until you find a set that works for you. It's VERY tempting to use a Rare Candy to make a difficult fight easier, but there's always a chance that you'll need the extra level later on, and a single Rare Candy can go much, much further at a higher level. I hadn't made a single long-form KZread video until I made the Corsola one back in August, but I've been doing challenge runs since December last year - I broke the process down into little steps to make the whole thing less intimidating: I started off by getting comfortable with a route through the game. For the most part, this is going to stay the same, and you'll know roughly where you want to go at any one time. I then created an overlay with all the information I could ever need about the Pokémon - the info on-screen is as much for my benefit while recording as it is for the viewers' benefit while watching! After that, I started timing and recording runs, while also streaming them live on Twitch. This helped me understand what people enjoyed seeing, and what people wouldn't mind being skipped. And finally, I decided to take on a VERY difficult challenge for my first video. My logic is that if you create a brutal challenge for your first run, subsequent videos will feel easy in comparison, and by the time you're doing your next tricky run, you'll feel comfortable with the video making process. I hope I've not bored you to tears with this explanation, and I really hope it helps if you do decide to run in the future! :)

    @@Squidgy This is really helpful! If I ever really start trying to make my own long form videos with these challenges, I will definitely reference these ideas. Little steps are likely the key to feeling confident enough to make similar videos. The first step you mentioned is something I've already been practicing a lot, and that has really helped me feel confident in playing the game. In just 5 runs, my route through the game has been really consistent, and it has worked. I know the things I need to grab (key items, rare candy, and TMs/items available) and what order to do things in, with the knowledge to skip things if needed (ex. skipping Erika until later with a water type) I've also really learned a ton of details - really committed them to memory - that help me make decisions while playing. For example, I know the elite four aces have sitrus berries, but I always forgot about them - now, I remember them and can play against them. I'm also super aware now of fights that have Intimidate users, which are incredibly significant in a solo run. These sorts of things that I can keep learning during each run really make me feel good & getting better about playing the game. Keeping rules in the spirit of the run really helps my mindset in these challenges. As well as waiting to use Rare Candy, I've chosen to fight the Elite Four at my current level first (the same way you fight Red; same inspiration), and also not save in between Elite Four (I think Jrose does the same if I remember right). This really makes the end game more exciting and tense, as the Pokemon has to be a lot more consistent, rather than relying on luck to make it through (though some Pokemon will naturally get good & bad luck, of course) I really enjoy saving Rare Candy for the end for that reason. There's a *chance* that it might be more helpful early on than later on, but by removing the possibility, it reduces both the likelihood of making a wrong decision, and also reduces having to grind manually at the end if that happens, which is never the most fun part of a run. I currently only do one run with the solo run pokemon, but if I go back to one, I would remove these end-game rules and route them more specifically. But in the first run, where I'm just seeing how well I naturally do with the Pokemon, this playstyle has been really effective for me. For each run, I only really look up movesets in advance and note down what moves I want, and then my general knowledge of the game supplements the rest of the routing I do in the run. Looking up/routing too much in advance - "if Misty's Starmie is a guaranteed 2 hit at Level 22 with... " - would make this much more difficult to start playing. But I expect that when I come back to a run, I could much more confidently route than when I first started using a Pokemon, which is another thing that really helps me get the spark in doing these solo runs. One other random thing - feeling fine to pause the timer mid-run for things like encountering the right wild pokemon (for HM friends), pausing to make decisions, think about something, or take a break, or if you make a player-error; all of that really takes the pressure off as a challenge runner. It doesn't feel like if I forget a rare candy somewhere, or I forget a key item, or just need to take a break; none of that feels like I'm "ruining the run", and that helps so much with making this more fun. I realize that all challenge runners likely do this in some capacity (at least to take breaks) but I'd never thought about it as a rule until seeing your videos & live runs, and that is so helpful with feeling more comfortable in doing these myself. (I feel like I responded with something that's doubly long, so I also hope I didn't bore with all these details. I'm really excited to do more solo runs though and I'm happy to share my thoughts from my runs :) )

    I think we could easily chat for hours about the intricacies of creating a challenge run - I've given you a follow on Twitter, in case you want to message there, as it'll be a lot easier than following a KZread comment thread. The more you play the game, the more confident you become, and the more knowledgeable you become. For instance, I now know that Morty has a 90% chance to use Curse on the first turn, so I need to prepare for that if I am running a Pokémon that doesn't outspeed or OHKO all of his Pokémon. There's a bit of a split in the challenge run community between people who intricately plan every little detail of a route, and those who look at the learnset and try to figure it out on the fly. Both are equally valid strategies and can produce fun runs to play, as well as fun content, but I fall into the latter category. I love not knowing what my roadblocks are going to be, and having to re-route on the fly. I did a failed Dunsparce run on stream the other day, and I had no idea that Jasmine would be such an issue for Dunsparce, so I restarted with a better Hidden Power type and steamrolled through most of the game. Nobody's going to have a perfect run for every recording session - you're going to make mistakes, and that's what the pause button is for on the timer. Say, for instance, I forget to pick up the SecretPotion in Cianwood City: I'll pause the timer and make my way to the front of Cianwood City's Pokémon Center, unpause the timer, collect the SecretPotion, and then re-pause the timer until I'm in the exact tile I on before. It's imperative to take breaks when doing runs. I have fixed points in the game where I will always take a break - after Gym 7, and after the League - but I will also take breaks after Morty, or after Red Gyarados, if I need them. The worst thing you can do is power through mental fatigue and end up making silly errors because you didn't give yourself breathing room!

Went for far less grinding early on to get faster times, but that came with risks, of course. I thankfully didn't have to grind at all for Rival 2 thanks to a combination of Przcureberry, Mud-Slap, and Fury Cutter, and Whitney was also super easy with Fury Cutter. I have a huge gap between Bugsy and Whitney because of bad luck searching for HM Friends in the forest. I also got an unexpected reset against the Rocket Admin with the 5 Koffings and 1 Weezing, but this one was from Weezing barely hanging on and using Smokescreen, followed by me missing over and over until going down. This was a lot of fun and I'll be subscribing to this channel and watching these challenges and doing any that seem fun to me. Kingler did well, if only the physical/special later gen stuff was in this gen :D I was glad to see guilletine get used!

    I think mudslap would deal more damage than surf against Morty, actually. It's super effective and Kingler's base attack is 2.6 times the base special attack, so that would be a relative power of 20*2*2.6=112 compared to 95. 20 power is low, but the circumstances actually make up for it. I may not understand the damage calculations and I haven't compared the specific stats of the relevant Kingler with DVs though, so I might well be wrong. *Edit: I'm wrong! Forgot about STAB, so surf was absolutely the right callcenter. Still funny to look atvthe difference though! :P

  • @Squidgy

    @Squidgy

    Жыл бұрын

    Because Surf has STAB, I believe its effective power would be 142 as opposed to 95, meaning that it'll be stronger than Mud-Slap. It definitely was stronger against the earlier Gastly, but I'd need someone who's better with numbers than me to give me a definitive answer

    Writing before I've started the video so I can be more objective within the confined of my own biases. First of all: you keep doing runs with my favourite pokemon! It's like you're some kind of doing the runs with the pokemon I like guy. Secondly I think Kingers will struggle wherever he can't one shot something with strength or dig or whatever and the opponent can retaliate with a special move. I don't think its own low special attack will be too much of a hindrance but the low sp.def and speed will mess it up.

  • @Squidgy

    @Squidgy

    It'd feel too much like an anticlimax to build up to Red then waste Rare Candies on him - I've built up to this one point for the entire video, and the endings just wouldn't have the same feel.
