Hartung Family Farms is a farming operation out of Jackson and Clinton County Iowa, with our main farm located in Preston Iowa. We have around 2400 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa, rye, and oats as well as around 750 head of cattle. We have a wide range of International equipment from small tractors from the 1970s to newer large farm tractors!

Here we are in May of 2023. Bushel prices are dropping to $5.70. It's crazy to think that a truck load only brings like $6k while I learn the crazy high costs of seeds, fertilizer, diesel, repairs, taxes, land rent if renting the land, etc. I ask how in the heck do y'all do it? (Jonesville, WI)
I enjoy watching these grain hauling videos your a good truck driver I got a good laugh at u asking the cows to be your friend

Corn is averaging $6.8-$7 a bushel as of 9-16-22, going to be a good year for farmers!!! FYI, this price is an all time high in history.

Correct… but on farm expenses are also at an all time high… double what they were last year from fuel to seed to chemicals

Welcome to inflation
Thank you for the explanation. Now I understand that confusion. Love how you went from making money to demonstrating how to almost lose a chunk in the first 10 seconds. Farming is the only business where you need a full time job off the farm just to earn a living. It's sad. I think everyone should spend a week on a farm doing the work and then going to a full time job every day. Maybe more people would be willing to pay more for their food, but they will never understand why people farm. It can't be explained simply. It's in the blood. Stay safe. God bless.

Dang in can’t believe I’m the first to like this video
Great video and super interesting for someone who's not a farmer :). Sorry if I missed this in the video, but I'm wondering if farmers store their grain until they can get a decent price. If so, approximately how long is this grain stored? Do you "restart" and dump the old grain with a new crop? Convert it to feed?

I am not a farmer, but I am a scientist. It is unlikely that the farmers would store their grain until they can get a better price. I am assuming there are standardized prices for grains according to the type of grain as well as the grade. You can think of it like the foreign exchange at the bank. It is unlikely that a farmer would store their crop until a period of volatility in the market because this would affect the grade of the crop. Fungus's such as Penicillium or Aspergillius species may grow on the crops causing the crops to become in-edible because of the formation of mycotoxins (i.e. aflatoxins/ochratoxins). Storage depends on a variety of factors if the farm is properly equipped to monitor the stored crops (i.e. determine the amount of fungus development), the environment, the storage facility being used (if its large enough for bulk storage), or the regulations set in place for their area. Typically storage might be between 6-12 months, but in proper conditions food can be stored for several years (i.e. the seven year famin in egypt). In my opinion it is better to sell crops as soon as they are picked under the most favorable environmental conditions. Selling somewhat early would reduce the formation of mycotoxins, and the farmer wouldn't be responsible for the formation of the mycotoxins given they followed the rules and guidelines set in their region.
Farm question. I see in your intro a harvest of corn when it was still green. Here on the east coast its normally late October or November when they harvest and corn stalks are dried up light brown. Just wondering what the difference is

Cutting while green is for cow feed silage basically like salad, while when dried its harvesting corn is what you see when Ron was hauling.
