HOW FAR DO I HAVE TO MOVE my NARROWBOAT?

This is not legal advice, but there is certainly some legal stuff in what I am going to say, and things may have changed recently ( but I do not think so). Firstly, unless things have changed recently you always got some form of warning (letters stuck on your boat for example telling you to up your game) In fact CRT used to just allow you a 6 month licence renewal if you had not moved enough in the previous 12 months if they thought you were not playing ball in order that you were on notice to "up your game" as so to speak. The law is a bit vague but it is slowly getting clearer, although CRT seem to like it being vague. In the summing up of a legal judgement in November 2013, which was supposed to be a test case which failed, the judge decided to play along and still give some clarification even though he did not have to. It was quite refreshing to here a judge understand a bit of boating history. Firstly, bona fide means that it must be genuine, ie you can not claim a journey just to avoid the rules, ie we can not move a boat 50 yds and claim that as a bona fide journey. He said moving a boat 500 meters in the same parish was not a different place, but moving a boat 2 miles to somewhere that wasn't that parish clearly was. He then went on to say somethings that CRT were claiming were clearly wrong. The old you can not go back and forth rule is wrong, he gave an example of the ferry on the Mersey, that never traveled move than a mile, but was certainly in a bona fide journey. He said that CRT claiming you should progress around the network or use a significant part of it was also wrong, as boats went from Ellsemere to Ellsemere port and back and never left the shropshire union, and coal boats also went back and forth on the same canals but were still bona fide. Now you should notice something from what I have written. The term bona fide is the most important thing. There isn't really any other rule except bona fide journey and not the same place... everything else is just stuff CRT have slapped on. Me myself, I would not take what I have written as a guide. I would not go back and forth from one place to another every two weeks no matter what a judge said, my balls just are not big enough. I would certainly stay on one canal if it was long enough. I would not bat an eye lid at going a big distance over a long period and then turning round on the same canal and slowly making my way back. As many have said, just don't take the pee and you will be ok.
Good video! Thank you May.

Always a joy when one of your videos shows up - excellent singing voice by the way :) I have been toying with joining this life for years now and the thing that stops me more than anything else is the issue of continuous cruising and having to hold down a job. So this was quite on point for me :D It's an issue I hesitate to bring up in case it triggers anxiety but an attendant thing that gives me pause is security when away from the boat. That and vandalism of the boat itself. I can't see any effective way of safeguarding your property when you are away - I know a house is just the same but there are usually neighbours to keep an eye out.

Its also fine balance to be able to move your boat and park a car in safe place thankfully the canal looked flat so no up and down hills all the time . As well I guess. I don't drive so have to work out the logistics of bus and train stations and the share number of people can be a little bit of odd feeling when I have been out in that middle of nowhere for two or three weeks. I was told from one parish to the next or roughly a mile and a half. I never had a problem with the crt. Like you say , as long as you play the game . They pretty much leave you alone. I spent a good part of a year without a permanent mooring on the Broads, all moorings are 24 hour! I used a pushbike to get to the car to move it to the moorings. Moorings were never guaranteed so could be a 1 mile between car and boat, might be 10, usually never much further. You have got the methodology right, don't take the P and get the authority on your side. Not sure what me and the boat have in store for the future, possibly going exploring again. 🙂

Haha brilliant! I think if I moved a lot further I wouldn't have a car! Just a badass bike!
If you add the continuous cruise cost to the cost of the boat diesel for the month, it must end up averaging like £300 + a month? I would also be worried about my car being in a random car park where a stranger can just park next to your car and scratch or damage it.
Hi may, how do the river authorities keep an eye on your movements to make sure you behave?

Except she did move, and I also suspect she often moves further than 1 mile. I'm going to be in the Burton on Trent area for 4 months (winter gig job). I plan on moving between Arewas and Mercia Marina (13 mile stretch). If i rotate between 4 or 5 mooring spots, in that 13 mile area, I'm pretty confident in saying that CRT will be ok. However, I do get you totally, about boaters who never mover, hence breaking the rules.
How long does it take to get through a lock typically if there was no queue?

There's a lot to be said for becoming an expert and completely immersed in a local environment. Have you found places away from the motorway noise ? I guess the idea behind the continuous cruising is that the CRT don't want people monopolising the best locations, or acting like they own them, which is entirely reasonable. btw did any of the film crew fall in ? The picture you showed looked pretty precarious - hanging on with her toenails 😱

Its not that simple. You can travel Twenty mile ore more and not be seen by an inspector. Then when you get back an inspector sees you and assumes you haven't moved at all. I have to go back to my usual stretch of the canal so i can get to the Doctor and dentist. But the truth is there is no minimum distance rule. Its rubbish. They can also say they are not happy with your cruising pattern. The law courts on the other hand refer to moving to a new PARISH every two weeks. i am currently on the langollen.
@wellbeingonwater
11 ай бұрын
Carry on carrying on I say!
Ha ha! your 'don't take the piss' covers nearly every and anything I would say. I can see why your asked to move or the canals would soon become another on water housing estate but it sound difficult if you have kids with schools and all that bit to think of. Around this area marinas are not cheap to stay in and work out more than a price in rent to say a flat. Lots are moving out of Bristol docks as they have put their prices up and if you have a car it now cost £9 / day to travel in and out of the docks area. Funny when I was a kid and born and lived around there it was nothing but a rat infested playground but now a major money spinner guessing with still the same rats around but now posh rats.

@@Steve-B58 I'd say three miles is a pinch, hills and all but I wouldn't want to be parked further away. My bike did 30 miles with pedal assist and 12 miles easy with non assist before it packed in. What I was really referring to was that it's quicker than walking say 3 miles to your car and back, the bike folds up to go onto a boat or into a boot of a car....I wouldn't even like to walk a mile if I can go on a bicycle of some sort.

Hey Paul, same name as myself 👍 I found this on Grammarist about the meaning of 'in a pickle' or apparently where it came from... ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ In a pickle means in a difficult situation or in a quandary. The origin of the phrase in a pickle seems to stem from two different places. First, there is the sixteenth century Dutch phrase in de pekel zitten which literally translates as sitting in the pickle, meaning to be drunk. Second, there is the Shakespeare play The Tempest, in which Alonso asks “How camest thou in this pickle?” and Trinculo answers “I have been in such a pickle since I saw you last that, I fear me, will never out of my bones…” In this case the phrase in a pickle also refers to being drunk, in time it came to mean to be in a difficult situation or in a quandry.
