How Fake Food Became A $90 Million Industry In Japan
Fake food samples, or sampuru, can be seen in most restaurant windows in Japan. The hyper-realistic plastic foods help with language barriers and advertising, but they're also a prominent and historical staple in Japanese culture.

What's great about this 'fake food' is that when you order the meal, it looks exactly like the display. Not like Mcdonalds burger commercial vs sad reality :/

Well if you're in Japan then that's right, they will actually give you as much as what is displayed right there

Tyler Tong Sort of, but a lot of the places send either the item frozen to the artist or detailed pictures, or both. So it often looks like what you ordered

eddie duke not only in Japan. You can find it in any Japanese restaurant all over the world.I was in Singapore and i went to Liang Court, its full of Japanese restaurants, shops, bakeries and a japanese grocery store. We went to a japanese restaurant there and they actually have rows of fake food display. And whatever we ordered and served on the table, its the same like the fake ones. That only works if you went to a restaurants that not only serve authentic japanese food, but all the staffs and cooks actually came from Japan.

As a food photographer, I find this intriguing. It's so much more convenient, and the food doesn't spill, melt or go bad under the harsh studio lights. It would actually be really practical to use them instead of the real deal.

People who don't know the meme won't get this, making it not funny, spongebob's episode where he ripped his pants is an example of this. Search up "How Spongebob Predicted Meme Culture"
I don't like the ring of a word "fake food". It should be called plastic food replica instead. Fake food doesn't describe those appropriately.

Oh wow! When the guy was handling the fake burger it like brought back a memory from so long ago. I remember being in preschool and playing with plastic food toys! I distinctly remember trying to gather up every single piece one day and there was a lot of missing pieces. I actually started making my own fake food out of clay when I was in 2nd/3rd grade, and to this day I still find enjoyment in making miniature food out of clay. This is so awesome, I wish I could get a job like that here in the US

I think that’s why I love Japanese plastic display foods. It is a specialty craft, but it’s like, the professional version of toy play food from childhood. :D
It's also for restaurants because then actually show you how the food will look if you get it in Japan.

Good way of making a sample of cakes to out on exposition on the bakery, no ingredients thrown away. :)
Ive always been interested in these cool fake food thingies, I feel like if I was rich I would have a large collection.
I always found these fascinating. It's so great that we can learn about it in English via youtube. In all honesty, I think restaurants have moved on to electronic displays. I was at a Kyoto restaurant where everything was ordered by tablet on the table. It's more convenient than having to go outside and point.
i just wanted to say that i watched a 30 minute long episode on just this topic from the japanology channel and im still not quite sure what to do with this information other than weird flexing that i've 25 minutes on all of ya'll
I feel as though this works very well in japan as well because the food will look like what they are advertising. You couldn't do this in the U.S. because so much food advertising is fake and unrealistic
I'm having flashbacks of grade school when I'd run to the kitchen play sets just to play with the fake food.
I grew up in Tokyo, and when we moved to Hawaii, I missed seeing those overly intricate displays. Just love seeing a neat display shelf and the novelty of seeing plastic food that honestly looks good enough to eat. Like play food toys, but leveled up.
Seems like a fantastic application for 3D printing.

Obviously I don't want the traditional art form to go away though.
It's amazing how they can do this
$90,000,000 a year for a business industry. Let's say you have over 200 companies in Japan that do this. That's less than 500,000$ each company takes home each year, not accounting for their expenses this is really nothing.
I just want to collect these. They look awesome.
Hope these plastics don't end up being dumped in sea and eaten by fishes :(

Exquisite work 💕🕊🙏❤🇬🇧🍪
And the best thing is that your order will really look like the sample. 😋
Imagine how cautious they we’re when eating in they’re cafeteria LOL
Aware at this since 1998 from NHK's Japan Video Topics.
I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate. this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants. along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days, menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app.
Whoa, this is awesome! They look hella real
Have you tried adding some MSG on them?
This is the real life equivalent of anime food.
In Japanese restaurants, their meal sometimes looks like the fake food designs. That's the great part.
Japan is exceedingly cool!
